Donald Trump on Tuesday alleged that Ted Cruz’s father was with John F. Kennedy’s assassin shortly before he murdered the president, parroting a National Enquirer story claiming that Rafael Cruz was pictured with Lee Harvey Oswald handing out pro-Fidel Castro pamphlets in New Orleans in 1963.

A Cruz campaign spokesperson told the Miami Herald, which pointed out numerous flaws in the Enquirer story, that it was “another garbage story in a tabloid full of garbage.”

“His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald's being — you know, shot. I mean, the whole thing is ridiculous,” Trump said Tuesday during a phone interview with Fox News. “What is this, right prior to his being shot, and nobody even brings it up. They don't even talk about that. That was reported, and nobody talks about it.”

“I mean, what was he doing — what was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death? Before the shooting?” Trump continued. “It’s horrible.”

Trump’s tangent followed his rebuke of Rafael Cruz using the pulpit to court evangelicals for his son.

“I implore, I exhort every member of the body of Christ to vote according to the word of God and vote for the candidate that stands on the word of God and on the Constitution of the United States of America,” Rafael Cruz said in a video clip aired by Fox News. “And I am convinced that man is my son, Ted Cruz. The alternative could be the destruction of America.”

Asked to respond, Trump called it a disgrace. “I think it’s a disgrace that he’s allowed to do it. I think it’s a disgrace that he’s allowed to say it,” he said, before touting his support from Jerry Falwell Jr. and other evangelical leaders.

“You look at so many of the ministers that are backing me, and they’re backing me more so than they’re backing Cruz, and I’m winning the evangelical vote,” Trump continued. “It's disgraceful that his father can go out and do that. And just — and so many people are angry about it. And the evangelicals are angry about it, the way he does that.”

“But I think it's horrible,” he added. “I think it's absolutely horrible that a man can go and do that, what he's saying there.”

parroting a National Enquirer

That's exactly where we want our president getting his information.

“I think it’s a disgrace that he’s allowed to do it. I think it’s a disgrace that he’s allowed to say it,”

So The Donald will make America great again by restricting the First Amendment.

I actually agree with Trump regarding the libel laws. There should be one law of libel for all people. Just because a person is a celebrity should not mean that anybody can take any false shot he wants at him, without the need to fact check and verify.

Take a shot at a private person, and if you're the publisher, YOU have the obligation of making sure that what you are writing that is defamatory is true. If it isn't, you're guilty of libel.

But the Supreme Court flipped that around for famous people. In their case, they have to prove that the media acted with malice when it printed something false. So, the media can absolutely crucify some public figure, claiming that they had sources (however reliable), and the public favor has to prove that the paper actually knew that the story was false, and printed it anyway in order to do harm.

So, we have two completely different standards of the First Amendment. I think we should only have one, and that it should be the standard that always applied to private people.

I think that the Supreme Court's decision to gut the protection for public people and to exaggerate the press's ability to publish falsehoods with impunity was not protecting the First Amendment - the First Amendment was fine for the 180 years before that decision - but was simply gutting the individual right to privacy and right to not be defamed, neither of which are enshrined in the Constitution, but which ought to be.

Trump's not stupid enough to believe this National Enquirer story, is he?

Whether it's true or not, Trump really doesn't need to attack Cruz at this point in time.

He is already so far ahead that Cruz has no chance to catch up.

Didn't Trump make some sort of promise a week or so ago that he was going to start acting more presidential or something like that?

I think this is more evidence that Trump doesn't have enough common sense to be president.

Hillary will slaughter Trump, of that I have no doubt. Of course Cruz has no chance if he were nominated either. Voters are being played like a drum by the PTB. It is the only way they could get Hillary into the Presidency was to sabotage all the Pubbies. Who is a big supporter of Hillary, why it is Donald Trump. After all this is over, he goes back to his life, and the nation is in tatters. This last attempt to smear Cruz with his father being associated with the JFK assassin, and of course being the Zodiak killer, is all on DT. He is the father of all the slander going on, and I cannot see a way to delude myself into voting for him. It is past the time to worry about political solutions, the fix is in.

Where's the "libel" here?

There is no libel by Trump.

The false claim is in the Politico caption -- "Trump accuses Cruz's father of helping JFK's assassin (lyin' Donald)."

What Trump said was, "His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald's being — you know, shot."

Trump asserted that Rafael Cruz Sr. was with Lee Harvey Oswald. He did not characterize what Cruz Sr. was doing with Oswald. He noted such was reported. Such was reported, with a picture purporting to show Cruz Sr. with Oswald. Whether true or false, what Trump said would not be libel.

Trump did not allege Cruz Sr. was helping with anything, and certainly not with the assassination of JFK.

The Trumpette's must be SOOOO proud to support such an intelligent and humble candidate, whose entire persona and intellect speaks to their own.

I have no doubt this little example of his character will gain him the support of the conspiracy freaks everywhere, though.

How long can it be before he is promising to open Area 51 up for public inspection as Trump 51 musemint park, with the promise "I'm gonna send THESE aliens back to their home solar system too,and gonna make their home world pay us damages!"

Yeah,he does. He is still the same insecure overcompensating little trust fund snot and bully he has always been. Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly,and Trump has to run his mouth at people he suspects of being superior to him (practically everybody) from far, far away while surrounded by bodyguards.

He is still the snotty little shithead he was when he was 8 years old.

Where's the "libel" here?

I don't know.

I was commenting generically on my approval of Trump's view that the First Amendment has been badly misapplied by the Supreme Court, allowing public figures to be falsely maligned with impunity.

If I were to look at the base case, I would probably say that accusing somebody of a monstrous crime (such as the assassination of a President), is libelous, and that the only defense to it would be truth...which the accusers would have to present.
