Title: Go ahead, Donald, get 1,237; it won't matter: RNC delegate (Curly Haugland)

GOP Delegate: 1,237 number means nothing for Trump

Curly Haugland, RNC Rules Committee Member and unbound delegate, talks about delegate nominations at the Republican National Convention, including Donald Trump's chances of becoming the party's nominee.

Donald Trump may be the only Republican presidential candidate who can realistically hit the magic 1,237 number for the majority of delegates, but according to a senior Republican National Committee official that does not mean he will become the GOP presidential nominee.

Curly Haugland, a longstanding RNC official and an unbound delegate from North Dakota who will be on the convention rules committee in July, told CNBC that attaining 1,237 during the primaries does not secure the nomination.

"Even if Trump reaches the magic number of 1,237 the media and RNC are touting, that does not mean Trump is automatically the nominee," Haugland said. "The votes earned during the primary process are only estimates and are not legal convention votes. The only official votes to nominate a candidate are those that are cast from the convention floor." Supporters cheer for republican presidential candidates Donald Trump

Haugland explained the primary number is really an estimate. That's because the eligibility of some delegates in how they are voted in could be questioned and their status may not be considered valid, Haugland said.

"Remember every state has a different delegate allocation process," he said. "Delegates are picked up in state contests that can be winner take all, open primaries, and remember there are seven states that allow the candidates to pick their own delegates. Until those delegate challenges are settled, there is no 1,237."

Haugland said he expects the delegates won in winner-take-all states to be most likely challenged.

Hitting 1,237 in the primaries does not mean the candidate would automatically become the GOP presidential nominee.

"You become the presumptive nominee when you get 1,237 bound delegates," RNC spokesman Lindsay Walters told CNBC. "You officially become nominee when you have 1,237 votes on the floor of the convention."

Trump has been contesting the delegate appropriation methods, accusing the Ted Cruz campaign of stealing delegates in Louisiana and Colorado. The Trump campaign has said it is considering challenging the seating of the Colorado delegation at the July convention. In March, a Trump senior adviser confirmed the campaign was moving on its plan to contest delegates in Louisiana after Trump won the state's primary but received fewer delegates than Cruz.

The Trump campaign did not immediately return a request for comment about Haugland's assertions.

Poster Comment:

Trump has the same number of delegates as the senator from Italy, Rick Santorum, or the Canadian senator Teduardo Cruz... zero. Only votes from the floor of the convention are real. It's wide open to whoever gets the votes at the convention.

Jeb!, Ruboto, Lindsey Graham, Lyin' Ryan, whoever. The vote count is Zero(0), so they're all presumed losers at the moment. (1 image)

It is interesting to note that Virgil Goode, who ran for president himself in 2012 as the Constitution Party’s nominee for the high office, has endorsed Donald Trump for president.

It is even more interesting to learn that a poll of the Constitution Party members asking “which Republican party candidate would you vote for” showed that 44% of the 580,049 total CP members responding were for Trump.

Your suggestion of the Constitution Party is no viable alternative choice. Now shock everyone, post something intelligent.

Smart political ploy by Trump!

It is Trump’s uniquely vague platform which has little connection to conservative orthodoxy that gives him easy flexibility to retool as he moves towards winning the nomination and general election … more so than the two remaining conventional Republican candidates.

Trump is incredibly divisive and does have high negative ratings. BUT ... he will inflame turnout among not only the Republicans but also the demographic blocks the Democrats need to get to the polls to win in a general election.

While some continue to try to write him off, Trump continues to exceed all expectations and is running a magnificently executed playbook no one has ever witnessed before.

Perhaps. I don't think it is right to cheat the winner.

Remind me again when the founding fathers ever actually voted FOR slavery.

Please feel free to check the Black History books first, because that's likely to be the only place you will find those "facts".

NOT voting to make something illegal is NOT the same thing as voting to make something legal.

And while we are at it,how about we toss in a bit of uncomfortable reality, and state the obvious, that times were primitive back then in the Pre-Industrial age,and everything in this new and developing country required massive amounts of labor. Fields don't clear themselves so they can be planted, and coal doesn't dig itself, nor cows milk themselves, chickens don't collect their own eggs, etc, etc, etc.

Listen to what passes for history these days, and you would swear the Founding Fathers invented slavery because they hated blacks.

BTW,while we are on that subject,PLEASE note that owning and selling African slaves was legal BEFORE this country was a country, even the original colonists that were under British Rule passed a law making it illegal to enslave Indians.

Being a British Colony at the time, they had no authority to override existing British law,so slavery stayed on the books. Partly from tradition/inertia,and party due to need.

An old poll reflecting Trumps comments on banning Muslims and building border walls. Some people back then actually thought he meant what he was saying, not just selling woofs to the rubes.

Oddly enough,so people still think he means it.

Donald Trump may be the only Republican presidential candidate who can realistically hit the magic 1,237 number for the majority of delegates, but according to a senior Republican National Committee official that does not mean he will become the GOP presidential nominee.

When the Los Cruzian cult wanted John Kasich to drop out, Ted Cruz argued that, as John Kasich had no path to 1,237 delegates, he should drop out.

When desperation started to set in, Ted Cruz claimed that if Donald Trump did not win a clear majority of the vote in New York, Trump should drop out, reasoning that if a candidate could not win a majority in his home state, he should drop out. In so doing, Cruz ignored the fact that he could not carry a majority of the vote in Texas, his home state. Nor could John Kasich in Ohio, his home state. But Donald Trump proceeded to carry over 60% in New York, winning 90 of the 95 delegates in the process. Ted Cruz finished third with 15%.

Of course, when Ted Cruz' chance for 1,237 delegates was mathematically eliminated, he bullshitted past his previous outcry, professing that it did not matter if he could not claim 1,237 delegates.

Cruz went on to claim there would be a contested convention as Donald Trump would not be able to gain a 1,237 majority.

It has become increasingly evident that Trump may claim and exceed a 1,237 majority.

Now the Los Cruzian cult claim that a Trump clear majority does not matter.

And Cruz and Kasich proclaim a desperate cooperative agreement in their attempt to stop Trump. Tomorrow, they will get royally thumped in five primaries, clearly demonstrating the futility of the Los Cruzians.
