Ben Carson on Monday night accused his opponents of conducting "dirty tricks" directed at his campaign and after the results from the Iowa caucus came in, spreading the false rumor that he had suspended his campaign.

Carson made the claim in an email to supporters after Sen. Ted Cruz was declared the winner of the Iowa caucuses. Carson came in fourth with 9.3 percent of the vote, behind Cruz, Donald Trump, and Sen. Marco Rubio.

"For months, my campaign has survived the lies and dirty tricks from opponents who profess to to detest the games of the political class, but in reality are masters at it," Carson said in the email. "Even tonight, my opponents resorted to political tricks by tweeting, texting and telling precinct captains to announce that I had suspended my campaign - in some cases asking caucus goers to change their votes."

Carson went on to say he partially decided to run for president "to stop these deceptive and destructive practices, and these reports have only further steeled my resolve to continue and fight for 'We The People,' and return control of the government back to them."

In a minor flap earlier in the evening, CNN briefly reported that Carson was not planning on heading to New Hampshire or South Carolina after Iowa, leading to speculation that he was planning to drop out of the race.

Not so: ".@RealBenCarson will be going to Florida to get fresh clothes b4 heading back out on the campaign trail. Not standing down," tweeted Jason Osborne, the Carson campaign's senior communications strategist.

Cruz reminds me more and more of LBJ. That is a dirty campaign trick right out of LBJ's playbook.

You mean there were no laundry services in his hotel ? His flight home to Fla (which alone could probably pay for a few suits ) is what fueled the speculation . It was a strange move for a candidate in his position .You should see some of the comments on social media.

Of course his opponents would use it to their advantage. I think he just wanted to get out of there before the snow storm.

CNN did report that. Cruz just passed on the info. Nothing wrong with that on Cruz's part.

The dirty Trixter is Rubio. I'm not for Amnesty.

CNN did report that.

CNN said "taking a break". That is not the same as "suspended his campaign", the official lingo they always use.

Cruz's people saw a chance to exploit a little ambiguity in the chyron and tried to create the impression Carson had quit. I'm sure Ted knew nothing about it.     : )

Of course, Carson is being a little too pissy too. Does he honestly expect us to believe that his supporters heard a rumor and went home, despite the fact they had to know he was campaigning steadily right up to caucus day? If they are that stupid, it would be better if they stayed home.

It's like the old joke about "Tuesday is election day for Republicans. Democrats can vote on Wednesday." Again, do you really want people that stupid to vote on Tuesday? Isn't the American voter dumb enough already?

You want to deport them and immediately let 90% of them come back in, like Trump does? That is legalization certainly. They would be resident aliens with green cards and other official documents.

I think Cruz is probably the toughest on amnesty and illegals.

His family looks good. Melania needs to tone down the color of her outfit. If Trump had a more conventional campaign staff, they'd tell Trump this kind of stuff. It's what image consultants are for.

At least Trump didn't call Iowa stupid again, like he did a while back.

so ? This is piker stuff compared to most of the tricks that happen during campaigns . Do you really think Carson's reason for leaving was to get a change of clothing ? If he is going to be holier than thou ,perhaps he should try some honesty because no one buys his reason.

Lee Atwater was capable of such tactics. Certainly, Trump's old buddy Roger Stone has pulled tons of dirty tricks exactly like this. Stone has specialized in dirty campaigning for decades.

Karl Rove too. Back in 2000, McCain was campaigning in NH and SC with his adopted daughter, a dark-skinned girl from Malaysia that Cindy McCain brought home from her charity work there. Rove did push-polling in South Carolina telling the voters that she was actually his long-lost lovechild from his years in Vietnam. Pretty lurid. But that is what finished off the Stain in 2000, leaving the path clear for Bush.

I know, I know, it's just so shocking that any pol would engage in dirty campaign tricks.

I recall that very well. It was that act that permanently turned me against W Bush and caused me to think he is an immoral, despicable man.

Yes, the evil cretin managed to win based upon that obnoxious lie...and went on to become one of the worst Presidents in history.

I did not tar Jeb with the fact that his brother is a nasty piece of shit. It was when Jeb and his brother both stood there in Easter week and let Terri Schiavo die of dehydration while her frantic parents were held at gunpoint by police under Jeb's command - that was when I resolved to never, EVER back Jeb for anything.

I never forget either of those despicable acts by the Bush brothers. Those particular acts made me hate each of them in his turn, and I still do on account of those acts.

Looks like Iowa beat you to the punch already.

Jeb (via his PAC) spent $2,884 per voter and got almost 3% of the vote. (5,165 votes spending $14.9M from his superPAC). That's before you even count what Bush spent from his own campaign funds on offices, volunteer expenses, shuttles, etc.

Note, Cruz simply passed along the CNN report.

"A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is... A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Iowa got that right.

Of course, now that Jeb? has a delegate, I think that it may be possible for him to be nominated. And if he is nominated, and the convention doesn't choose on the first ballot, I guess he can use his connections to become to nominee.

At which point I would prefer to see Clinton or Sanders win. Because putting up with 8 years of Clinton would be worth it to prevent Jeb! from taking the office.

The ticket will be Trump/Rubio, and it will win.

It's like the old joke about "Tuesday is election day for Republicans. Democrats can vote on Wednesday."

That's not a joke. Dims have a long history of voting on Tuesday, and then again on Wednesday if necessary. The question of "how many dead will the bring back from the graveyard to vote on Wednesday depends on how many votes they got on Tuesday

Not with Cruz. There will be more to come.

Cruz is Santorum, without the charm.

He eked out a one-delegate lead in Iowa.

He's going nowhere in New Hampshire, in Nevada and in South Carolina. Trump will win all three of those, and the party will coalesce around Trump and Rubio.

Now that Cruz's people stole Carson's votes, you can bet that the other Carson people across the country will set their faces against Cruz, and Trump will be the beneficiary of that.

Carson won three delegates. Those three are not going to Cruz.

It seems Cruz is out to ruin the fun of a good dirty trick. As I expected, Ted himself is totally innocent of any involvement. Low-level staffers done it, as always seems to be the case.     : )

NBC:

Ted Cruz Apologizes to Ben Carson For Spreading Word He Quit Race

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sen. Ted Cruz apologized for misleading Iowa Republican leaders by suggesting during Monday's caucuses that rival Ben Carson was dropping out.

Cruz issued the mea culpa after Carson accused him of foul play.

"This was a mistake from our end, and for that I apologize to Dr. Carson," Cruz said in a statement Tuesday.

Cruz won the Iowa caucuses; Carson came in distant fourth.

Cruz said the mixup began after his staffers saw an online CNN story saying Carson "was not carrying on to New Hampshire and South Carolina," an apparent reference to an article about Carson's plans to head home to Florida after the Iowa caucuses.

"Our campaign updated grassroots leaders just as we would with any breaking news story," Cruz said.

But Carson said he wasn't dropping out. He accused Cruz supporters of purposefully misleading voters at caucus sites. His campaign pointed to a tweet from Iowa Rep. Steve King, who endorsed Cruz, as evidence. The tweet was sent at 8:20pm EST, when the caucuses were ongoing.

. . .

"I was reasonably happy today, until I, you know, discovered the dirty tricks going on — spreading rumors I had dropped out," Carson said Monday night.

. . .

"That's the reason I got into this race, looking at the level of deceit and distrust going on in country," Carson told supporters.

Cruz, in his Tuesday apology, said his staffers should have followed up with Carson's statement that he was staying in the race.

Carson's campaign downplayed the importance of a trip home.

"Dr. Ben Carson is not suspending his presidential campaign, which is stronger than ever," the team said in a statement. "After spending 18 consecutive days on the campaign trail, Dr. Carson needs to go home and get a fresh set of clothes."

The campaign told NBC News Carson plans to speak at Wednesday's National Prayer Breakfast — the event that put him on the political map three years ago — before heading to New Hampshire for Thursday's debate. His team could not say how many events, if any, the candidate will do while there.

. . .

The Granite State doesn't appear to be a high priority for Carson, a deeply religious social conservative who has focused on the early states with strong evangelical voting blocks, Iowa and South Carolina. He's spent just 13 days in New Hampshire so far, according to p2016.org. That is the same number of days Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker spent in the state, when he ran for president for just three months this summer.
