The long awaited demolition of the Kremlin Presidium or "Building 14" began this week. The building was constructed in the 1930s, and up until 2011 the Soviet era building formerly housed the offices of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the highest legislative body of the Soviet Union.

The Presidium stands on the site of the destroyed Chudov and Voznesensky monasteries and the Lesser Nicholas Palace. The two monasteres were among the historic buildings within the grounds of the Kremlin ordered to be destroyed by Joseph Stalin as part of the state atheism campaign, which resulted razing of religious structures from all over Russia.

Once the demolition is complete, a team of archaeologists will conduct excavations of the lost architectural sites will begin in April 2016. Any items discovered will be transferred to the funds of the Moscow Kremlin.

"The finest experts have been invited to organize and conduct archaeological excavations on the territory of the 14th corps in the Kremlin", - said Deputy Director of the Russian Academy of Sciences Asya Engovatova. "It will be one of the most ambitious archaeological excavations carried out within the Moscow Kremlin. It is the dream of every archaeologist, "- she added.

In August 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a bold announcement, in which he suggested rebuilding both the Chudov Monastery and Voznesensky (Ascension) Convent. The decision to re-establish the historic square and the restoration of the destroyed monasteries has been referred to UNESCO for further discussion.

Interesting. After the big church got rebuilt so quickly and so well, I don't doubt Russia can and will rebuild these buildings as well, erasing the Communist tragedy's monuments and restoring the past.

It sounds like it will be 2020 or later before they do anything to rebuild at the site.

I'm guessing a building built and maintained during Soviet times from the 1930's era is cheaper to tear down to replace than it would be to fix.

This has to be inaccurate. The Presidium was a small permanent legislative body of the USSR. And it has been gone since the mid-Nineties, replaced by the Russian federation. Since the USSR has gone, there have been no national supreme soviets to send delegates to the Presidium.

Sloppy reporting and sloppy editing, it seems.

It was not meant in the exclusive sense, Building 14 housed Supreme Soviet that did not meet permanently. The Presidium was a permanent acting part of the Soviet and that is why people called the building "Presidium".

The quality of reporting is really declining. Inaccurate use of idioms, bad grammar, misspellings, homonym errors, evidence of no proofreading or oversight by a staff editor, etc.

I notice it almost on a daily basis. You almost have to wonder how many outlets are already using computer-written articles in their daily reporting.

Yes and no. In this case it is quite likely that an English speaker had to struggle with the original Russian. And he might be his own staff editor.

Putin Wants Monasteries, Church Rebuilt in Kremlin

Well good for Putin, I suppose...
I'm not familiar with any of this, but I assume that the Monasteries and Churches are architecturally more attractive than the old Soviet Presidium and would be good for increased tourism. Plus, rebuilding this stuff puts people PEACEFULLY to work and helps the domestic economy. Much better than wasting money building tanks & bombers & missiles & subs and other crap like that.
