Thanksgiving has nothing to do with your mythical pictures or tales about Pilgrims clasping their hands in "thanks."

It is about George Washington requiring a holiday of feast about the end of Revolution.

There is some background to this.

In that era, harvest/end-of-year festivals were pretty universal across Europe.

And they were mandatory.

Businesses were required to close, whether the owner or any of the employees wanted to or not. Protestants were forced to celebrate feast days, against their religious belief. And Protestant business owners were forced to pay extra taxes for these holidays, meaning they missed work and they had to pay for religious celebrations they didn't believe in.

America had the first secular non-compulsive Thanksgiving celebrations. You didn't have to celebrate it at all if you didn't want to. And many did not, choosing to work and do business instead.

Strangely enough, everyone has forgotten this now. There is public pressure to close every business and shut down the federal/state governments and commerce for 4-5 days. The feds now want a five-day weekend with a paid day off after Thanksgiving (because they are not already overpaid quite enough compared to the private sector).

America has forgotten the value of our heritage; to guard and defend our nation. With our lost heritage, we are doomed to fight enemies in foreign nations while importing them onto our land as invited guests so we fight among ourselves choosing whom is an enemy.

The US Government has caused the grief of and about our nation. It is not happenstance, either.

Thanks!
May God Bless You and yours this Thanksgiving!

Second year without my Dad.
Little brother didn't bother to call.
I spent no time with my cousins - the are spending
time with their kids and in-laws.

But Mom is still around!
So we cooked and carved a turkey breast, cubed and
steamed and buttered some squash, sliced some rolls.
The vanilla pudding was mixed with some blueberries.
(Forget the pie, Mom...)

It was all quite okay.

My wife and I enjoyed our day indoors at home. A strong wind blowing snow and cold temp kept us indoors. It didn't help that my wife fell on ice and broke a bone in her leg last Friday. But, she is quite happy sitting on her easy chair.

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is... A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Happy Thanksgiving

So were you back home in Texas or still in Florida for Thanksgiving?

I had mine last Friday night cause it was the only day we could all get together, 2 of the daughters had to work yesterday...

It was nice here so I was outside patching the driveway and playing with the dogs. I had a small hole (or so I thought) up by the garage. When I started pulling out the asphalt I found out the base course underneath had washed out and ended up using a whole 40lb bucket to patch it. Got to go out today and find some good sealer for some other small cracks.

Was online ordering some gifts for Xmas, also thawed out some pork to make some Tasso (for Red Beans and Rice next weekend) and some bottom round to make some "Po Boys" today... :)

" But Mom is still around! "

That is great Chuck. Spend all the time you can with her. I lost my Dad back in 94, and i lost Mom in 86. I still miss them.

i will make one suggestion. I wish I had done this. Buy a cassette tape recorder, or some digital thingy. But when you are with her, and discussing family history, or what ever, record it. I think back to discussions I had with Mom & Dad, and really wish I had recorded them. I wish I had done that with my grandparents as well. It would be wonderful to listen to them now. My two youngest kids did not get to know them, I so wish they had. But recordings would be a good thing for them.

Remember, enjoy your Mom, and do all you can for her now! You will not regret it!

Meat and gravy is in the oven right now and it's about time to get some potatoes cooking...

Also need to put together the spice mixture for the Tasso and cover the pork with it and let sit in the fridge for 2-3 days before I smoke it...

Had about 7 of those overseas Thanksgiving and Christmas meals between combat tours and Korea.

Good chow every time except the last one in 2009. They let the Indian cooks handle it and it turned out fine but UN-American. I think they put curry in everything. I like curry, just not on my Thanksgiving day meal:)

Remember having one Thanksgiving in the "dust bowl" at NTC Fort Irwin CA (Mojave). The division commander had the option to get us there the day after Thanksgiving, but thought getting us there two days prior to Thanksgiving would give us more time to draw equipment. You can imagine how well that went over with the troops and our families. :(

He must have been looking for a promotion or he did not realize how fast the troops can "gear up" and put their gear away when properly motivated!!! And I also assume he was informed of this little tidbit of information and chose to ignore it???

The CG was none other than Wesley Clark. So yes he ignored such advice.

The same guy who used to ride a horse around (1CD we still have horses) during SGTs time training. One day he came up on an NCO in my Battalion area training his troops on NBC equipment.

He stopped dismounted and explained to the NCO how he could be a better trainer. He mounted up again and his horse took a huge dump on the grass in the battalion HQs area.

To give credit to the NCO he tried flagging down the general to pick up after his horse. Not fast enough.

Long story short the Bn CSM was not happy and made a call to the Div CSM. I heard that profanity laden conversation from my office down the hall (I was Bn Adjutant back then).

To no avail of course. Some young NCO and soldier had to clean up the mess. I recommended a "return to sender" policy which helped the CSMs mood a bit:)
