Title: DC Police Chief: ‘Best Option’ Is For Citizens To Take Out Paris-Style Attackers

In a 60 Minutes interview scheduled to air November 22, Washington DC police chief Cathy Lanier said taking out the gunmen in a Paris-style attack is the “best option” for citizens between the time they call 911 and the moment police arrive.

Lanier said citizens basically have three options–they can “run, hide, or fight.” And she said choosing to “take the gunman out” is the best option if the citizen is in a position to do so.

According to CBS News, Lanier said, “If you’re in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there.” She admitted that such advice runs “counterintuitive” to what police have been saying for decades, but she stressed that the situation has changed.

Lanier said: “We always tell people, ‘Don’t…don’t take action. Call 911. Don’t intervene in the robbery’…we’ve never told people, ‘Take action.’ [But] it’s a different…scenario.”

She also made clear that she does not want Americans to be paranoid, but she does want them to be alert and prepared.

In January 2013, Breitbart News reported that Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke asked county residents to get a gun and familiarize themselves with it so they could use it to defend their lives between the time they dialed 911 and the time police arrived. Since that time, other law enforcement and public figures have urged citizens to arm up for self-defense; advising against the old tactic of compliance and passivity in the face of life-threatening danger.

In August of this year, Louisiana Sheriff Jeff Wiley “urged women to get concealed-weapons permits” so they could keep a gun with them with which to defend their lives. And on October 2–just one day after the Umpqua Community College gunman allegedly lined up victims and questioned them about their religion before killing them–Tennessee Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey (R) urged “Christians” to get a concealed carry permit in order to defend their lives against religiously-motivated attacks, according to The Washington Times.

DC police chief Lanier is now the most recent law enforcement figure to break with the old pacifist dogma.

How stupid is this? don't intervene in a robbery but definately attack an armed terrorist. Still I expect this idiot thinks it preferable that one person be killed rather than several people be killed, and if you make a mistake and take out someone with a legal carry permit then you are a murderer with no come back. Police arriving at the scene may well take you for the terrorist

You have to know who and when to shoot. For you, please don't keep a gun. You would kill everyone besides a terrorist.

The thinking is probably: Your chances of surviving a bank robbery is very good if you don't resist. The chances of surviving a Paris type attack is very poor if you don't resist. Ergo, you should resist a Paris type attack, but not a standard bank robbery.

Robbers generally don't kill people, as doing so gets extra police attention which they don't want. Plus there's usually no advantage to killing.

That aside, responsible gun ownership and carrying is has always made the most sense.

And that's right, too.

If you're dealing with a property crime, the criminal's goal is money. Property can be recovered or replaced. Life and limb cannot be. Getting yourself killed over property is stupid. The typical armed robber is after the money, is nervous and scared. Escalating with him will make it MORE likely you're going to get killed. That's why the police don't want people to respond violently to garden variety crime.

Rape is a different matter, of course. It's an ugly, ugly situation, but most people faced with the situation choose to end up raped rather than dead. This, too, is the better answer.

There are very few serial killers out there, and the ones that are usually prey on socially isolated victims, and the do it in private.

Terrorism is a very different animal, because the terrorist expects to die, even WANTS to. He can't be dissuaded by normal rational calculations. The robber high on crack is looking for money to buy more crack. The victim is just incidental. But the terrorist jacked on hashish is there for the PURPOSE of killing the victim to make a religious statement, and then die a "martyr" to his cause.

You have a much greater chance getting out of a robbery alive if you don't try to fight (particularly if he's armed and you're not). But the terrorist is going to kill you anyway, so you may as well attack him. If everybody launched themselves at the terrorists, a lot of people will be shot sooner, but the terrorists will be torn apart sooner, and immediate medical intervention can save lives.

How do you identify a terrorist before the attack which is the only time you are likely to be successful

Well reasoned..

Poorly reasoned. Terrorists will use surprise to facilitate their attack. -- To successfully foil a surprise attack, you must surprise the attackers by an immediate counterattack with any weapons at hand. (Preferably your own gun)

You may not be successful, but at least you won't die as a cowardly paraclete.

Makes sense. And yes armed robbery gets you quite a few more years in the Pen even if you don't get off a shot.

Why in the past most home theft did not involve the perp having a gun. These days they are getting more bold with these home invasions both robbing and shooting any witnesses.

You know, the only thing more alarming than Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential field is the fact that Ben Carson is the guy right behind him. While establishment puds like Jeb! Bush and Marco Rubio can’t decide if they want to beat Trump or emulate him, the Good Doctor made it clear this week that he is not only willing to replicate Trump’s signature brand of hot-garbage-spewing, but he’ll say even DUMBER shit. Here is Carson from earlier in the week on the Oregon shooter:

"Not only would I probably not cooperate with him, I would not just stand there and let him shoot me. I would say, ‘Hey, guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.’”

Yeah have a large dog but she is a Yellow Lab. Gentle creature who likes to run and retrieve the balls my son hits.

I do have a Bassett-German Shepherd mix who was a double rescue dog. Has quite an attitude, good watch dog, fast, can jump up to neck high on a human and has big razor sharp teeth.

She's good with the family and people we know but that's about it:)

Everyone else is fair game coming across the front porch. Wonder how she will take to the MiL when she visits?:) They are a lot alike. LOL.

The TF is the trip wire (she hears everything including crickets farting) and the Boxers are the booby traps... If nobody was here I have no doubt those 3 would have some fun with someone doing a B&E...

My Boxers are "usually" the nicest dogs you want to meet but my male doesn't like certain moves made by strangers. Normally he just ignores people but one day out on the bike path I thought he was going to tear this one guy a new one. He was making moves I guess Brody didn't like (waving his hands around above his head) and it was all I could do to hold him back until the guy walked away...
