WASHINGTON — President Obama bestowed the nation's highest military honor on an Army Captain who rushed a suicide bomber attacking his patrol in Afghanistan three years ago.

But retired Army Capt. Florent Groberg said the Congressional Medal of Honor doesn't belong to him.

"This medal belongs to the true heroes," he said. "It also belongs to their families, true heroes who live with that day every day missing one of the members of their families."

Those heroes, he said, are the four other Americans killed in the attack: Army Command Sgt. Major Kevin Griffin, Army Major Thomas Kennedy, Air Force Major Walter Gray and U.S. Agency for International Development foreign service officer Ragaei Abdelfattah.

"The medal is the greatest honor you can ever receive," Florent told reporters Thursday in the rain outside the White House. "So I'm honored, overwhelmed, but I hope to become the right carrier for them and better myself as a human being for the rest of my life." Groberg, or "Flo," as Obama called him, was born in France in 1983, grew up in Bethesda, Md., and became a U.S. citizen the same year he graduated from high school. He competed on the track and cross-country teams at the University of Maryland where, Obama said, he worked hard to shave seconds off his times.

"As he found out later, a few seconds could make all the difference," Obama said Thursday at a Medal of Honor ceremony in the East Room of the White House. "Training. Guts. Teamwork. What made Flo a great runner also made him a great soldier."

Groberg was on his second deployment to Afghanistan in 2012, serving on a personal protection detail for Army Col. James Mingus, now a brigadier general.

It was on that detail on Aug. 8, 2012, that his patrol was ambushed in a coordinated attack involving motorcycle decoys and two suicide bombers. Groberg spotted the first bomber, grabbing him by his vest and pushing him back until he fell, triggering an explosion knocking Groberg back 15 or 20 feet, breaking his leg and rupturing his eardrum.

Groberg spent nearly three years recovering at Walter Reed National National Military Medical Center. After 33 surgeries, he still walks with a slight limp. Retired from the military, he now serves as a civilian at the Department of Defense.

"And every day that he is serving, he will be wearing a bracelet on his wrist — as he is today — a bracelet that bears the names of his brothers in arms who gave their lives that day," Obama said.

"The truth is, Flo says that day was the worst day of his life. And that is the stark reality behind these Medal of Honor ceremonies — that for all the valor we celebrate, and all the courage that inspires us, these actions were demanded amid some of the most dreadful moments of war," he said. "That's precisely why we honor heroes like Flo — because on his very worst day, he managed to summon his very best."

Click on the link and read for yourself that there was a white NCO that also tackled the bomber, yet only the non-white guy got a Medal of Honor for it.

I guess if you are a white guy that does the same thing a black guy does, you don't get any credit. A non-white guy who also happens to be a naturalized citizen. BTW,the army thought enough of this young Captain to put him in for a MoH,but they didn't promote him to Major on his way out the door? WTF is behind THAT?

Pete I would have to see how many years of service the CPT in question had before his medical discharge.

He had 30 surgeries in roughly 3 years.

So if he was not in the zone for promotion they obviously could not just promote him to the next rank.

He might have been promoted to CPT while in Warrior Transition.

An officer now is usually promoted to CPT four years from commissioning.

To MAJ 11-12 years from commissioning.

So there is a 7-8 year gap from CPT to pinning on the gold oakleaf.

Also I saw clips from the ceremony. He did not look Black to me. I thought he was Hispanic.

True, but so what? It's not like he would be taking up anyone's slot, and they did award the man the MoH.

Used to be fairly common to promote someone being given the boot early due to wounds as one way to reward them for their actions. They will never be recalled to AD,and the promotion can help them be able to cope financially with an unplanned early retirement.

No,he is a US citizen. He was born as a French citizen, though. Looks to me like his ethnicity may be Muddle Eastern.

After reading the citation I would say he qualified for serious consideration. Meaning tackling a suicide bomber and getting blown across the room fits the category:)

I think they are equating it with jumping on a grenade that was already counting down to an explosion, which it isn't because they were jumping on a man who had not pushed the button yet. We know that because there is no count down with suicide vests. You push the button and they explode instantly.

In other words, explosion wasn't assured, but it still good guts to jump a suicide bomber, even if it also required a massive amount of stupidity. What you do with a suicide bomber is put a bullet in his brain to instantly shut down his system so he can't push the damn button. If they were close enough and had enough time to tackle him, they certainly had more than enough time to have put a bullet or several in his brain and prevent the bomb from exploding and crippling him,the white idiot that was tackler number 2,and to have saved the lives of those who died.

I am pretty sure I understand the root of the problem. He wasn't really a "shooter" combat troop. He had the mind set of a admin weenie/military policeman that wanted to make an arrest on a "suspect". The bomber was a "suspect" because he clearly hadn't exploded the bomb vest YET,and until he did or they subdued him and verified it was indeed a bomb vest because he didn't want to create a "incident".

A real combat troop/shooter would have taken out the bombers brain the instant he saw the vest and THEN verified it was a live bomb.

One issue is not in question, and that is he got the Medal of Honor BECAUSE he is NOT white AND because he is a immigrant.

Hell, the white guy that did the same thing at the same time not only wasn't at the WH for the MoH ceremony, they didn't even mention if he even got a Bronze Star for doing the same thing this dummy got the Medal of Honor for. Which means HE did NOT get a Medal of Honor also,BECAUSE HE IS WHITE AND MOST LIKELY A NATIVE-BORN AMERICAN.

BTW,PLEASE take note that NEITHER the Captain naturalized citizen that got the MoH OR the white natural born American NCO that got "honorable mention as a support player" are to blame for ANY of this. They were just stage props in the political soap opera being orchestrated and played on stage at the WH by our racist anti-America president and his controllers.

Everybody there knew and understood this, but nobody could say a word about it without getting attacked as racists dumping on a brave MoH awardee. The poor soldiers served as the perfect defense shield for the conniving politicians.

Now that you mention it,I'm starting to wonder, too. By appearance he seems to be of Muddle Eastern extraction, and he came from France, where they are drowning in Muslim immigrants.

Given our racist anti-white,anti-Christian,and anti-American president and his controllers, that may just be the next shoe that is dropped to try to shut down criticism of our allowing Muslims and other immigrants into the country. Anytime any talking head or politician questions the wisdom of allowing them in,the anti-American turds will be able to trot out this guy as a example of how brave and patriotic Muslim immigrants are in order to shut down the discussion.

Which pretty much automatically included anyone who had received or been put in for a Medal of Honor, and who was being retired early due to wounds suffered in combat.

May have been different in the past.

However, if one is not in the zone for promotion there is no ranking up before medical retirement. If someone is on an approved promotion list (promotable) then they will bump up their pin on date.

Same goes for any rank who is KIA or dies while on active duty. If they are promotable the AG will action paperwork within 24 hours to promote to the next grade.

Or maybe it just seemed that way because everybody I knew that was in that position got promoted before being retired or buried?

Obviously I didn't know everybody in that position.
