Title: #ColumbusWasaHero Angers SALON, Because, Well, It’s SALON

Every day, I half expect to see a report confirming what a long suspected, that Salon is actually a Long Con by Alt Right operatives trying to create the most hysterical and intellectually vacuous image of the American Left possible. So it’s almost unfair to note this, but I couldn’t help myself.

Scott Eric Kaufman is one of those people I truly hope is cynically peddling faux outrage in order to make a decent living. If he is actually triggered by these things he writes about, I don’t know how he makes it through the day.

Today’s crime against humanity is the hashtag #ColumbusWasAHero. Kaufman kvetches:

Despite the fact that it’s pretty much inarguable at this point that Christopher Columbus was a monster of historical proportions — the debate is, at this point, how great of one he was, comparatively speaking — there are many people who still vehemently defend him as a sort of sad proxy of their childhood or ideology.

[Twitter embraces – and unloads on – the #ColumbusWasAHero hashtag campaign, October 12, 2015]

There follows the typical Point and Sputter treatment as Kaufman declares he is shocked, just shocked at right wingers posting obviously true things such as: “Dear Columbus: thank you for helping civilize this continent. We are better off for it.”

Happy Columbus Day everyone. #ColumbusWasAHero. And as long as the real America remains, we’ll honor the Admiral of the Ocean Sea.

Poster Comment:

Happy Columbus Day to all American patriots, with a shout out to my fellow American's who share some of Columbus's Italian blood. To all you anti- American dope smoking hippies who rage against Columbus, ESAD hippy fags!(1 image)

Columbus was not an admiral or even a sailor. He was a piss poor mathematician who miscalculated the circumference of the earth by thousands of miles and thought when he hit the coast of what became America it must be India. Hence he named the people he found there Indians. The circumference of the earth had been calculated rather accurately 200 years BC by a Greek.

Yawn. I find it hard to believe anyone -- on either Left or Right -- is so genuinely passionate about Chris Columbus.

History just is, regardless of how much we like it or hate it. Venting about Chris C. doesn't change one iota of what he did, for good and ill.

So what? Who had the stones and the ambition to sail out into the unknown and discover another land mass,Columbus or that Greek?

BTW,unless I am mistaken,Columbus was Portuguese, not Italian. Not that it makes any difference.

Yeah,at least on the east coast. They just didn't,and still don't get credit for it,though.

I believe it was the Chinese who first discovered the west coast of North and South America, but they aren't going to get any credit for that, either.

Both made their discoveries, and then did nothing with them but leave. If they had remained and build settlements and colonized the land, they would have gotten the credit.

I don't know if they are related to any other group of peoples anywhere else.

It may even be that they ARE the "original peoples" of Central America.

There used to be a guy on FR that always posted the best damn articles I have ever seen anywhere on archaeology. I kept sending him FM's as long as I was able, inviting him to come post over here, but he never replied. Drawing a blank on his screen name now, though.

I have enough trouble reading big computer screens that anything smaller has never tempted me. I do have an 11 inch screen notebook that I use when traveling that I like pretty good, but I doubt I will ever try anything any smaller. Plus it only oost me 149 bucks with Win 7 Pro pre-loaded. Apple won't sell you a cup of coffee for 149 bucks.

BTW,was that posters screen name "Bam",or something similar?

?

As for the Incas and Mayans and south American indigenous people they could not find a dna match to other people. Its just hard to find any Incas and Mayans that have somewhat "purism" blood.

Just highlight and use the Backspace key.

Apple has never liked the Delete key or the right-mouse click. They grudgingly support them but they don't like them.

I have thick callus fingers so touch screens are tough for me to use. I have to zoom up to to use any kinda highlighting methods.

It irritates me that companies refuse to listen to their customers because of their arrogance. Im surprised someone has not hacked os and figured out how to add a delete key. Something such a shift backspace.

I only use my apple products to read or write really short messages.

A cheap foam stylus can help. If you have a newer iPad, you can even get those pricier pressure-sensitive stylii. Like this one:

Amazon: Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus for iPad Air, iPad 3/4 and iPad mini , $24.99

Just a plain capacitive stylus with foam tip for a few bucks will probably do all that you need. That's what I use if I'm going to do much with the iPad. But I do have a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard that doubles as an iPad case. So if I'm doing more than trivial text on the iPad, I just fire that up. Not as good as using a computer with full keyboard but not awful either.
