WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon is grappling with whether the U.S. should use military force to protect U.S. trained and equipped Syrian rebels now that they may be the targets of Russian airstrikes.

Senior military leaders and defense officials are working through the thorny legal and foreign policy issues and are weighing the risks of using force in response to a Russian attack, U.S. officials said Thursday.

Pentagon leaders have consistently said that the U.S. must take steps to protect the American-trained rebels because it would be far more difficult to recruit fighters without those assurances. Defense Secretary Ash Carter told reporters in March that the U.S. has an obligation to support them, "And we're working through what kinds of support and under what conditions we would do so."

U.S. officials later made it clear that rebels trained by the U.S. would receive air support in the event they are attacked by either Islamic State militants or Syrian government troops. Currently, that protection would apply only to about 80 U.S.-trained Syrian rebels who are back in Syria fighting with their units.

The U.S. policy so far is very specific. It doesn't address a potential attack by Russian planes and does not include Syrian rebels who have not been through the U.S. military training, even though they may be aligned with the U.S. or IS.

Carter declined to discuss the problem when asked about it this week. But U.S. officials acknowledged that this is one of the questions being asked as they debate the administration's response to what White House press secretary Josh Earnest described as Russia's "indiscriminate military operations against the Syrian opposition."

A key concern is the prospect of U.S. getting drawn into a proxy war with Russia in the event that Russian warplanes hit moderate Syrian rebels who have been trained and equipped by the U.S. military.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss ongoing deliberations publicly.

Tensions between the U.S. and Russia are escalating over Russian airstrikes that apparently are serving to strengthen Syrian President Bashar Assad by targeting rebels - perhaps including some aligned with the U.S. - rather than hitting Islamic State fighters it promised to attack.

Sure! Why not? After all, what's the big deal if we shoot down a few Russian fighters? No real harm done, right?

A six-man civilian contractor force could be sent to supply a bodyguard for each of the five remaining non-IS U.S.-trained Syrian terrorists, with the sixth contractor to act a press secretary to issue glowing stories of the continuing victories.

Senior military leaders and defense officials are working through the thorny legal and foreign policy issues and are weighing the risks of using force in response to a Russian attack, U.S. officials said Thursday.

"Thorny" is a much nicer word to use than "violation of international law as an aggressor against a legally recognized sovereign government".

The Russians and Iranians were invited in as legal allies. Nothing our coalition has done is legal. All of our so-called "allies" in Syria are, legally, outlaws and terrorists.

"Thorny", indeed.

A key concern is the prospect of U.S. getting drawn into a proxy war with Russia in the event that Russian warplanes hit moderate Syrian rebels who have been trained and equipped by the U.S. military.

Odinga went to some pains today to specifically disavow any intent to allow ourselves to be drawn into a proxy war against Russia/Iran in Syria.

AoS, today:

Russia Destroys ISIS Training Camp and Command Center That For Some Curious Reason Was Still Standing After a Year of Obama's "Degrade and Destroy" Air Campaign

—Ace

I guess Obama just didn't notice the ISIS Command Center there.

Obama spoke earlier today about Putin. His big move was, get this, to indulge in Mean Girl put-downs of the Russians, because that's pretty much all he knows -- politicking, insulting, running Mean Girl campaigns against people that are showing him up.
President Barack Obama said Friday that he was willing to work with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on moving Syria away from civil war, but only if that plan includes removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.

I'm sure Putin cares very much, Bammy.
...

Russia, he predicted during a White House press conference, would get stuck in a "quagmire," adding, "It just won't work, and they're going to stay there for a while."

I'm going to guess this is 100% wrong, because the Idiot Princeling is saying it.

The very thin-skinned and vain Idiot Princeling made sure to attack Hillary Clinton for daring to sound tougher than he does (as if that's a difficult trick).
...

[A]sked whether he now backs no-fly zones in Syria -- which his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, recommended this week during her presidential campaign -- he warned against "easy, low-cost answers" to ending the war...

He also said, "I also think there's a difference between running for president and being president."

Instead, Obama insisted that the only solution was diplomatic, raising the possibility of a brokered deal to remove Assad from power.

Why would someone need or want Obama for a brokered deal when they can have full victory by force?

Notice how the press plays along with this delusion, as if Obama's impotent mewlings have any effect in the real world at all.

Obama, feeling humiliated (as he ought to), went on to offer other impotent insults, specifically saying Putin is acting out of "weakness" and not strength of the sort shown by the feckless, incompetent coward Obama.
Obama said, "Now, last point I just want to make about this because, you know, sometimes the conversation here in the beltway differs from the conversation internationally. Mr. Assad -- but out of weakness, because his client Mr. Assad was crumbling and it was insufficient for him simply to send them arms and money. Now he’s got to put in his own planes and his own pilots. And the notion that he put forward a plan and that somehow the international community sees that as viable because there’s a vacuum there. I didn’t see after he made that speech in the United Nations suddenly the 60-nation coalition that we have start lining up behind him. Iran and Assad make up Mr. Putin's coalition at the moment."

Yes, but the two countries in their coalition are willing to actually fight, which the 60-country coalition that Obama likes to brag about largely is not.

An army of three guys willing to fight will beat an army of sixty unwilling to fight just about every time.

Obama went on to, as usual, suggest that Putin doesn't properly understand his own interests and goals and if he did he would agree to whatever faggity shit Obama is babbling about.

Notice the misspelled "faggity" at the end; it keeps it from showing up in word searches on websites. I thought I'd point that out for AKA.

I know of no UN resolutions which gives a whiff of authorized use of force in Syria. I could be wrong.

Unlike Iraq where we did operate under a UN Resolution (1441).

Well this assessment from AoS is dead on.

Zero is accusing Putin of failures?

How long have you been reading AoS articles??

Around 3-4 years, I guess. I even listen to their podcasts which are about the gayest thing you've ever heard. They just did one last week that was 40 minutes of politics followed by another hour of heavy breathing over Bradley Cooper in his Limitless movie and upcoming TV series. They had Jindal on last week and even made him talk about Bradley Cooper.

Jindal then tweeted: "@BobbyJindal: I was on with @AoSHQ where I spent 40 minutes talking about policy, my childhood, and you guessed it… Bradley Cooper.

So if you listen to their podcasts, shut it off the second they mention Bradley Cooper.

HotAir is a more prominent site, being founded by Michelle Malkin. I notice that AoS is far more likely to quote HA than HA is to quote AoS. But there is some cross-pollination. Just a few days ago, Gabriel Malor was writing an article at HA. I think HA is looking to expand and to find some new writers (because their posters are so mean to the staff writers there).

HA is a bit more of a serious news site, somewhat more prominent bloggers. AoS is more of a site for catty humorous writing, a favorite there are their SMOD threads (Smoldering Meteor Of Death, as in, come soon SMOD and put us out of our misery). AoS also has gardening, gaming, cooking threads at least once a week. And even a few threads just to show a painting.
