The Tesla Model X with the Falcon Wing Doors

Tesla revealed its pricing scheme for its upcoming Model X electric SUV on Tuesday when it sent out online configurators to prospective buyers. The limited edition first-run, dubbed the Signature Series, will reportedly retail for $132,000. For the base model. Granted, the Signatures will come with most every feature Tesla offers, like Autopilot. But if you want every option -- including Ludicrous mode as well as both the towing and cold weather packages -- get ready to shell out $143,750...

Econ...er...Elon is going to divide his customer base instead of grow it. Tesla will be lucky to survive until the (supposedly) affordable Model 3 comes out. They are losing ~$4,000 per car now. The ~$700 M just raised (by diluting the existing stock) will be gone in 6 months at last quarters burn rate.

And- they changed their service policy- if you live far away from a service center you'll be expected to pay to get the car to the service location by yourself- even if the car is under warranty. (and the warranty does not cover battery degradation!). Those ridiculous falcon wing doors are going to be a problem- not just if you want a roof rack. Hopefully they will have the drive unit fixed by then. (1 image)

An impractical 'SUV' for people who use SUVs for other than driving to the train station and picking up groceries.

An impractical 'SUV'

An SUV that can't have a roof rack because Econ...er...Elon had to have the falcon wing doors.

He better hope the handles on those fancy doors are more reliable than the silly motorized $5,000 auto door handles on the model S.

My old Honda had door handles that retracted into the door but they weren't motorized and didn't cost $5k to replace. The Service Centers are full now- sometimes it takes 3 or 4 weeks to get an appointment. That's only going to get worse. And hope there's no line at the charger- ROFL or that 20 minute quick charge could end up being 2 or 3 hours.

My old Honda .... The Service Centers are full now- sometimes it
takes 3 or 4 weeks to get an appointment.

My (10 year old Hyundai - out of warranty) -
usually gets an appointment the next day!

And it didn't need many appointments while under
warranty - still doesn't - ten years later.

But the black paint is scratched up like hell.
Oh well.

We are a Honda and Chevy family. The family roadster is the Chevy. I commute to work in a Honda. Both are reliable cars. The Honda stays in better overall shape though. Chevys start falling apart early in the interior. But that's for shuttling around the boys, their friends and trips to baseball practice and games.

...Chevy family...

My dad got over a decade out of his Cavalier -
until he sideswiped a dumpster with it at a garden
center landscape place. Luckily the dumpster was undamaged.
And no one - including my father - was injured.
But the Cavalier? Ummm... "Gigantic gash in the side of the
totalled car" - should about cover it.

But that ended my dad's driving career. He (voluntarily) never drove after that -
Mom or I had to drive him wherever he wanted to go.
He was in his late 70s when he totalled to Chevy.
