A new study published in the journal Nature Communications finds that even geographically widespread species with large populations, like human beings, may not be spared during a global mass extinction.

Living species have experienced five mass extinction events during Earth’s history. All were due to some kind of rapid environmental change, including climate change, caused by massive volcanic eruptions and asteroid impacts.

The last mass extinction happened some 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs and more than 75 percent of all other species perished due to the Chicxulub asteroid impact off what is now the Yucatán peninsula.

In the 21st century, with dozens of species disappearing every day at a rate thousands of times faster than normal, many scientists believe Earth is entering its sixth major extinction event. The reason: the rapid warming of global temperatures due to human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels.

Now, a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, finds that even geographically widespread species with large populations, like human beings, may not be spared during a global mass extinction.

Researchers from the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds and the University of Bath’s Milner Centre for Evolution in the UK studied the fossil record of land-dwelling vertebrates living 252 to 145 million years ago during the Triassic and Jurassic periods, a statement by the University of Leeds said.

While a species’ distribution over wide geographical areas does offer a kind of insurance against extinction, that insurance becomes null and void during a mass extinction event, the researchers found.

“The fact that the insurance against extinction given by a wide geographical distribution disappears at a known mass extinction even is an important result,” says Dr. Alex Dunhill of the University of Leeds in the statement. “Many groups of crocodile-like animals became extinct after the mass extinction event at the end of the Triassic era, despite being really diverse and widespread beforehand.”

What does this mean for humans? No one really knows for sure, but the prospects do not look good.

“These results shed light on the likely outcome of the current biodiversity crisis caused by human activity,” Dr. Dunhill adds. “It appears a human-driven sixth mass extinction will affect all organisms, not just currently endangered and geographically restricted species.”

"The reason: the rapid warming of global temperatures due to human activities"

When was this article written -- 1998?

Rapid warming? Global temperature has been steady the last 20 years. And even if the temperature was rising (it's not), how do we know the temperature isn't rising to where it should be? Perhaps we're emerging from a centuries-old period of global cooling.

Lol, you people are quite insane.

Thankfully, fewer and fewer buy into this bullshit every year.

Impossible. We humans have been keeping strict climate records for THOUSANDS of years! (Oh wait) HUNDREDS of years! (Oh wait)...It's actually a bit over a hundred years.

True. But they haven't given up. Insane zombies are in positions of power (like the Presidency and his admin) and about to kill the entire coal industry and trying to dry up our agriculture life-blood in California over this hoax.

Btw -- you checked out the money quote from Dr. Alex (Clouseau) Dunhill?:

"What does this mean for humans? No one really knows for sure, but the prospects do not look good."

Get that? It "doesn't look good" for us. Have you unpacked your portable blow-up caskets yet?? Cuz...prospects for living forever "don't look good!!" And just when we do go, "no one really knows for sure." Gee, thanks Dr. Clouseau.

Temperatures were warmer than today for most of the past 10,000 years

25 May 10 – The revamped cap-and-trade (control-and-tax) bill that Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) are trying to foist on the American public is predicated on a flat-out lie.

The control-and-tax proponents would have you believe that our planet has been enduring unprecedented global warming (now coyly referred to as “climate change”), but the facts do not bear that out. Facts. Oh, those damnable facts.

Look at this chart.

Easterbrook - Natural global warming Created by Cuffy and Clow in 1997, and based on Greenland ice core records, this chart shows global temperatures for the past 15,000 years.

You’ll see that today’s benign climate is not even close to being the warmest on record.

Not even close.

Temperatures have been warmer than today for almost all of the past 10,000 years.

In fact, if the chart went further back, you’d see that temperatures have been warmer than today for most of geologic history.

I sat just ten feet from Dr. Don Easterbrook, Professor of Geology at Western Washington University as he presented this chart, along with several of his own, at the Heartland Institute’s 4th International Conference on Climate Change in Chicago last week.

“Natural global warming much more intense than modern warming has occurred many times in the geologic past without CO2 change,” said Easterbrook.

The changes occurred rapidly, without any help from humans

“Fifteen thousand years ago, temperatures rose 10 to 20 degrees in just one century,” said Easterbrook.

About 12,800 years ago we plunged into the Younger Dryas, said Easterbrook. When we came out of the Younger Dryas, temperatures again shot upward, rising 15 degrees in just 40 years. Then, from about 10,000 years ago to 3,000 years ago, temperatures were warmer than today.

Forget human influence, said Easterbrook. Cooling and warming are both natural.

“Numerous, abrupt, short-lived warming and cooling episodes much more intense than recent warming/cooling occurred during the late Pleistocene, none of which could have been caused by changes in atmospheric CO2,” said Easterbrook.

“Twice as many people are killed by extreme cold than by extreme heat,” Easterbrook warned.

So let me ask you this.

Do we really want to pass a control-and-tax bill; do we really want to destroy our economy, based on the lie of “unprecedented global warming”?

No...."WE" don't; But the Elites, Statists, and Commies do.

The People KNOW it's a lie and hoax perpetrated by the elites and excuse to tax "wealthy" Western nations into oblivion (and further drive the West's middle class into a NWO serfdom.)

The narrative of "Global Warming" is a political lie; Moreover, the new meme -- "Climate Change" -- has been a constant. There's no doubt that earth's climate has indeed been cyclic.

An aside:

Do you find it odd or coincidental that geologists are able to determine the planets past climatology and flora and fauna ONLY from sedimentary core samples and fossils from 10,000-15,000 years? (within the bounds of pre and post The Great Flood) I don't.

It's an altogether different issue, but the catastrophic aftermath of planetary "re-birthing" facilitated by Great Flood (a scientific consensus) seems to have totally changed not only the climate, but entire geography of the magnetic field of the earth. It's very argubly thrown off all dating methodology. Just food for thought.

You really should do more research on the subject. I think you'd find that core samples, etc, -- are available from far older periods.
