Though billions of dollars have been spent on the “War on Drugs,” just 7% think we’re winning that war. In Colorado and Washington, they even voted to legalize marijuana, and most voters think drugs laws should be left to the states, not the feds.

7% Think U.S. Is Winning War on Drugs

Americans overwhelmingly believe the war on drugs is a failure, but there’s little support for spending more on it to win.

7% Think U.S. Is Winning War on Drugs

Only seven percent (7%) of American Adults think the United States is winning the war on drugs, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Eighty-two percent (82%) say the country is not winning the fight against illegal drugs. Twelve percent (12%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,000 Adults nationwide was conducted on November 9-10, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

Deckard - this is an honest question. It is not snark. It is not intended to impugn your character, or to make a point to you. I simply want to know, because it tests a theory I have.

Do you yourself, personally, use any illegal drugs?

By "use" I mean "use at all". I don't mean "use daily". I mean "do you EVER use them"?

Looking backwards, HAVE you ever used an illegal drug?

I think you will answer that you have indeed used an illegal drug at least once in the past, and that you occasionally have used them in the present, and will again in the future if the circumstances arise.

The survey asked, "Is the United States winning the war on drugs?" The obvious response is, "What do you mean by "winning?"

If "winning" means that people are no longer using any recreational drugs, then even I would say we're not winning.

"In Colorado and Washington, they even voted to legalize marijuana"

I don't see how legalizing one recreational drug out of thousands makes any statement about the War on Drugs. Maybe the War on Marijuana, but that's not the topic here.

I'd like to see a Rasmussen survey asking the question, "Is it okay if a state violates federal law and the U.S. Constitution as long as it passes a state law legalizing an activity you like?"

Here's an example of how disingenuous Deckard is about his "War on Drugs". If the United States were to legalize marijuana nationwide, we would NEVER hear from Deckard or his ilk EVER again about the "War on Drugs".

For him it's about marijuana. That's it. We could execute cocaine users in the street and he wouldn't care as long as his pot is legal.

Well, I guess the question is to define: winning.

That said, I would have to say from casual observation, it would appear to have been a waste of resources.

Do you yourself, personally, use any illegal drugs?

I do not presently - I have in the past, probably 8-9 years since I have smoked pot.

I would in the future if the opportunity presented itself.

My main objection to the war on drugs is based on individual liberty.

fed.gov does NOT have the right to tell me (or anyone for that matter) what substances I choose to ingest.

A government that has the power to tell you what drugs you may NOT ingest also has the power to tell you what drugs you MUST ingest.

Add to that the number of innocent victims of the "war" the unconstitutional actions taken in pursuit of said war, and the overwhelming costs associated with it.

Oh, I know what you said. But MY position is that if marijuana is made legal we'd NEVER hear from you again about any aspect of the War on Drugs. Ever.

We already know how misterwhite would answer this question:--

'Is it okay if a state violates federal law and the U.S. Constitution as long as it passes a state law making it illegal to do an activity you disapprove?'

He's said many times that States can prohibit damn near any activity they choose, by using majority rule tactics...
