DES MOINES — For five days, the royal-blue bus rumbled through miles of cornfields alongside a popular annual bicycle trek across Iowa. It showed up at a country music concert in Cherokee and at a bacon festival in Ottumwa.

And when the hulking vehicle with thick white block letters that spell “TRUMP” pulled into a Wal-Mart parking lot in Fort Dodge this week, people flocked to it. It didn’t matter that Donald Trump wasn’t inside. The bus alone — with the “Make America Great Again!” slogan extending across its sides — created an irresistible oasis of celebrity politics amid a desert of minivans and shopping carts.

“One hundred people showing up for a staffer? I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Chuck Laudner, a longtime Iowa organizer who oversees Trump’s efforts here. “They kept saying the same thing: They want something different.”

For many Americans, the Trump presidential campaign amounts to a billionaire talking endlessly, and entertainingly, on television. But here in Iowa, it’s another story. Trump is trying to beat the politicians on their turf, building one of the most extensive organizations in the Republican field.

The groundwork laid by Trump’s sizable Iowa staff, with 10 paid operatives and growing, is the clearest sign yet that the unconventional candidate is looking beyond his summer media surge and attempting to win February’s first-in-the- nation caucuses.

This is becoming a cause of concern for rival campaigns.

“I see them as a major threat to all the other campaigns because of the aggressiveness of their ground game,” said Sam Clovis, an Iowa conservative who leads former Texas governor Rick Perry’s campaign.

“You cannot swing a dead cat in Iowa and not hit a Trump person,” Clovis continued. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. . . . Every event we go to — the Boone County Eisenhower Social, the Black Hawk County Lincoln Dinner, the boots-and-barbecue down in Denison — the Trump people are everywhere with literature and T-shirts and signing people up.

I recall a couple of twits saying Trump didn't have a campaign.

So much for the comments here Trump has no ground game.

"When Americans reach out for values of faith, family, and caring for the needy, they're saying, "We want the word of God. We want to face the future with the Bible.'"---Ronald Reagan

From the article.

“The Trump bus will pull into an empty parking lot and just be there on the main drag, like the little town of Le Mars, the ‘Ice Cream Capital of the World.’ . . . People will pull over, go sign up. They’ll get 50 people in an hour and go to another town. That happens all over the state.”

Also from the article

Backers of former congressman Ron Paul’s presidential campaigns, which were well organized in Iowa, see Trump appealing to Paul’s base here despite the competing candidacy of Paul’s son Rand, Kentucky’s junior U.S. senator.

“He’s catching on with the average Americans who have had it with foreign wars, our trade policies and a stalled economy,” said Drew Ivers, Ron Paul’s 2012 Iowa campaign chairman.

I recall a couple of twits saying Trump didn't have a campaign.

That's because there has been no ground campaign there until this week. And we see no signs of a campaign in other states. The other serious candidates do have these campaigns set up with paid staff and offices and volunteer networks forming already.

Of course, Trump can make a big splash in Iowa without spending much. So it is a low-risk lark. Trump could run a ground campaign there for a few million. The whole point of Iowa's caucuses is to allow less-known candidates a chance to make a good showing so the big-money establishment-backed candidates don't win automatically every time.

Any signs of a Trump ground operation in NH or SC yet? If there is one, no one has written about it yet. Again, the other campaigns are visibly present in those states. Then there are the states where you have to hire petition gatherers.

In the past he proposed a 20% across the board tariff . Is that still his position ? (I can never tell because his positions often change like the wind) . He could be the 21st century version of Smoot-Hawley. GW Bush slapped tariffs on one industry (foreign steel ) and that turned into a fiasco.

The Trump bus ? From what I hear ,he put a paint job on an old jalopy . He went to Iowa long enough to mingle with the unwashed before he got back on his jet to return to the land of the " winners ". Call me a skeptic . My best guess is that now that he is taking his campaign semi-seriously ;he will expect the GOP to bow down to him or he will bolt and do a 3rd party challenge. He will be Teddy Roosevelt ushering in the Wilson Presidency .

Before long, they will expect Trump to be on that bus to do meet-and-greet.

“One hundred people showing up for a staffer? I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Chuck Laudner, a longtime Iowa organizer who oversees Trump’s efforts here. “They kept saying the same thing: They want something different.”

They want to take a selfie with Trump's bus.

I think he spent for a nice bus. Renting these buses is a big business and they're all pretty nice. Trump will have a bus as nice as anything around.

My best guess is that now that he is taking his campaign semi-seriously ;he will expect the GOP to bow down to him or he will bolt and do a 3rd party challenge.

The same organization used in the primary is used for the general election. Or to mount a third-party run which requires a lot of signature gathering in most states.

That is a good idea. Maybe more like 50 percent for nations like China.

We all rely on reporting. Including you.

In IA and NH, prez campaigns are more than a cottage industry with many players active over decades. They tend to know each other from past campaigns and also try to be players in Iowa state politics during non-presidential years. So there is a lot of reporting on them from outfits like the Des Moines Register (and who would even know the name of that rag if not for the Iowa caucus?).

You don't get very far with a campaign in IA/NH before the locals and the local paper sniff you out.

besides the fact that it breaks every treaty and law regarding trade we've made for years ;it is a terrible idea. Does he think other nations won't retaliate ? Does he want American consumers to pay more for the goods they purchase (consumers end up bearing most of the costs ). Tariffs and tit-for tat trade wars were as much responsible for the Great Depression ,and the world wars of the last century as any other cause .

and yes he has also proposed even more punitive tariffs against various other nations .

1st time I've been accused of being a lib on a discussion forum.

Whatever .

I made no comment on the status of NAFTA or GATT . NAFTA was ratified in 1993 and is a treaty . GATT and later WTO is an international trade organziation ;not treaty .

Reading through the WaPo article, I noticed:

The Trump campaign is targeting voters who may not have participated in a caucus before, modeling its strategy on Barack Obama’s 2008 Iowa campaign, which mobilized tens of thousands of new caucus-goers.

“We’re reaching people that the Republican apparatus doesn’t even know exist,” Laudner said. “The other day, one woman came up to say, ‘Hello, a lifelong Iowan.’ Her first question to us was ‘What’s a caucus?’ After we told her, she wanted to help. . . . Politics has not been the biggest thing in a lot of these people’s lives. They’ve got lots of stuff going on with their jobs or families. But they feel Donald Trump is what this country needs.”

How exactly can a person live a lifetime in Iowa and not know what the state's famous caucus is?

This is low even for low-info voters. Can there really be that many Iowans this pathetically uninformed?

Apparently Carson, the other non-pol, is working hard on the LIV (and low-info-nonvoters) too.
