Title: Former Halliburton Subsidiary is Suing Sick Military Veterans they Poisoned

Halliburton, the transnational oil field services company formerly run by former Vice President and accused war criminal Dick Cheney, is under public scrutiny again after it was revealed its former subsidiary is suing Iraq War veterans for $850,000.

Cheney self-approved major bids for his former company and its subsidiaries, which received massive government contracts in Iraq—funded by the American taxpayer—totaling over $39.5 billion. The U.S. war in Iraq has caused the loss of an estimated 1 million lives and Halliburton profited in the billions from contracts that facilitated the bloodshed. One of the lesser known repercussions from the war was the toxic nature of oil work and waste disposal that resulted in the poisoning of untold numbers of American soldiers and Iraqis alike.

In 2012, a federal court in Portland, Oregon, awarded $85 Million in reimbursements to twelve Oregon National Guardsmen who had been exposed to and fell ill from the cancer-causing toxin sodium dichromate at the Qarmat Ali water treatment plant in Iraq. One veteran described his current health situation, saying that his children “saw me go from being such a big, strong soldier to just a crumpled down man dying of cancer.”

The Qarmat Ali water treatment plant was operated by KBR (a subsidiary of Halliburton at the time). The 9th Circuit Court threw out the2012  judgement on appeal, announcing the veterans must sue the company in Texas, the state where KBR’s headquarters is located.

The case against KBR is being filed again in Houston, but KBR is now attempting to sue the veterans for $850,000 in legal fees from the first case—a thinly veiled attempt to punish the veterans for seeking justice for their severe mistreatment.

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon has expressed concern over the latest developments in this case. In a letter addressed to the Department of Defense, he said, “[W]e are concerned about the possibility of the DoD — and ultimately the American taxpayer — footing the bill for this seemingly endless and expensive litigation. In light of recent developments, and the potential for taxpayer dollars to enable the bankrupting of war veterans, we urge you to take control of this litigation and reach and equitable settlement.”

According to Military.com, “[T]he company (KBR) has argued in court that it can’t be held liable for wartime decisions made by the U.S. military, and that it was essentially following orders given by the government when it created the burn pits.”

Hundreds of other veterans have launched similar lawsuits against Halliburton, KBR, and several other military contractors in 42 states for negligence in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One veteran, David Montoya, who is suing both Halliburton and KBR after he fell ill to cancer, summed up this situation best:

“You just kind of feel betrayed by corporate America, you know? Regardless of your beliefs on the war, when it comes down to corporate America profiting so much and the amount of money they make, they can take the time and right steps to ensure the safety of the service member.”

“You just kind of feel betrayed by corporate America, you know? Regardless of your beliefs on the war,

Sorry, buddy, the "regardless of your beliefs on the war" logic does not fly.

There was no war. War is declared by Congress. Congress did not declare war, therefore, war did not exist and does not exist, as a matter of law. There are hostilities going on, police actions and the like, but America has never been at war since World War II ended. There was no Korean "War", no Vietnam "War", no Gulf "War", and no Iraq "War". Nor is there a "War" on Terror, or on drugs. If Congress does not declare war, there is no war. And if there is no war, there is no "wartime exception" clause.

But of course I am being unrealistic. In fact, there were wars, and are wars. In fact, the Constitution ceased to operate long ago, and the words in it are just artful tissue paper.

So let's speak in terms of realities. In reality, American soldiers and contractors are mercenaries. There is no draft and has been none since Carter ended it. Everybody there volunteered to be there. Or rather, everybody there signed a contract for extensive pay and benefits. They took a risk in order to get substantial financial and professional rewards, and social rewards as well: the country likes to speak of military men as "heroes", and military men like to primp and preen in those uniforms and think of themselves as heroes. There is very much of a mutual admiration society going on.

If it ever had anything to do with the actual NATIONAL INTEREST of the United States, we would have never been in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Libya, or Somalia, or Yemen, or Vietnam, or Korea, or Bosnia, without a Congressional declaration of war. Truth was, the "interests" in those cases were not deemed important enough by the American government (or, in most cases, the American people) to actually declare war.

So, everybody wants to live in a half-reality, of calling it war, and getting the various benefits, in terms of economics and liberty to "do" certain things, without being bound by the terms of WAR, which affects contracts, etc.

Contractors want to make billions and not have their profits requisitioned for the war efforts. The military wants the high pay and status without diluting it all with the massively swollen ranks and lower pay and benefits of a draft.

So, these mercenaries went off to unjustifiable police actions, and dealt over there with powerful, politically connected crony capitalists, who used the cover of "war" to do things that exposed these mercenaries to things that are killing them. The crony capitalists made a fortune and do not intend to hand it over to mere mercenary grunts, and know they merely need to outlast them in court until they're dead or too sick to go on. And the court system, composed of appointees of the crony capitalists and their political parties, protect their interests.

The moral comes from Jesus: live by the sword, die by the sword. If you sign up as a mercenary of the US government, you are low on the totem pole. The US government will give you good armaments and training to kill the designated enemy, but if you get hurt by our own side's contractors in their quest for politically-connected profit, you're just a mercenary grunt, and they are billionaires for whom the war was staged as a police action and to whom its conduct was outsourced, specifically IN ORDER TO maximize the milking of the US Treasury and handing that cash over to the crony capitalists. And to attack any of it or even call it what it IS, is unpatriotic.

So, you're a soldier. You were a mercenary grunt who got cancer from the crony capitalist contractors. They are important politically, and you are not. Therefore, you shall die of your cancer and you will get little, and your family will bear the loss. You chose to live by the sword, and now you are going to die by it.

And if you persist to the end in thinking that your beliefs about the war were right, that this was some just war, well, then you lose on all fronts. You lost your health and your life, your country betrayed you, and in fact you did great evil fighting in an unjust war.

In short: what you are experiencing is a very bitter form of divine JUSTICE. You allied with evil and did evil in the service of evil, and were paid for it, and now you are dying by the sword that you drew. You lose, and it's your fault for being a dupe.

Do not, then, continue to defend your stupid decision to be a soldier fighting for an evil country in evil and unjust wars, in order to enrich the crony capitalist who killed you. You are dying because you were wrong about everything.

Be right about everything now, repent of your stupidity. Your cause was wrong, dead wrong, and that is why you are dying. You will not be compensated, because the country you served in an unjust war is totally corrupt, and the profits of the crony capitalists who paid the politicians who sent you AND the judges who will screw you in the end are more important than your life.

Do not defend your war. Your belief on the war is everything now, for it is only in repentance that you can find peace in the next life. If you die belligerent and defending the evils you did, there is no repentance, and no forgiveness for unrepentant killers.

Also, if you do not open your eyes and realize that you are dying because you picked up the sword for evil, you will not lend your voice where it belongs: I am dying because I served this evil regime, and did evil in its name, as a mercenary, and I called evil good, but as a soldier I was simply not important, I was cannon fodder for a profit machine. I am paying with my life for having made that series of mistakes, for misjudging evil as good. Don't YOU now, young man, make the same mistake that I did. Want to die of cancer and be fucked by your government, which will not give you meaningful veterans care and which will crush you in its courts - they will always defend the crony capitalists, not the grunt? Then go take up the sword, fight for Caesar, and die like I am dying. You cannot expect anything else.

If you're lucky, you'll live to retirement. And you will never be forced to face the truth. Until you die. Then you will be held accountable for killing for an evil cause.

There is nowhere to hide. The answer is: never join up. Not for this government. Someday the country could change and become better. But for now, it is a cesspool of evil, engaged in unjust wars for profit. Sign up as a mercenary under THIS government, with THESE politicians and THESE courts, and expect to be fucked and to die, and for nobody to care.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

If you have "no other options", that's not true, you do have options. Take the "high prestige", "good pay" mercenary option, and if you're unlucky, the downside is calamitous.

But if you continue to DEFEND your beliefs in an unjust war, you will get no sympathy at all. You must recant your belief in the war, admit you were wrong, that it was wrong, stupid and evil.

If you don't recant it, then you will not have learned anything, and people listening to you, young people who might make the same mistake you did, will not learn the consequences of being a mercenary in the service of evil.

In reality, American soldiers and contractors are mercenaries.

American soldiers are more like Hessians these days.

One way you can tell American media is a puppet of the foreign policy establishment is their use of the term "private contractor" to describe mercenaries in the Iraq war.

Makes it sound that they were their to put an extension on the house or some such.......

At 71, I can only wonder what kind of country I am leaving to my Grandchildren, I pray they will one day forgive me.
