Above is the link to the homepage of sling tv,and below is a review by CNET magazine.

www.cnet.com/news/sling-t...rything-you-need-to-know/

Anybody else at LF trying this streaming tv service? 1st week is free, and after that it is 20 bucks a month and you get AMC and TNT,among other stations.

HBO is another $15 per month.

There are also free movies for your basic monthy subscription,as well as pay movies.

My Direct TV account was 70 bucks per month, but is creeping back up to a little over 100 bucks a month again,so I am looking for options.

I subscribed and hook up to it using my ROKU player, but you can also do both on your PC,or even on your smart phone.

Click for Full Text!

Poster Comment:

Just subscribed a couple hours ago,and have mixed feelings about it. A lot of the programs I would watch on it can also be watched on my Netflix and my Amazon Prime account for free, but not all. RIght now I have am/have been watching the History Channel on it,and the History Channel is also available on Netflix. Haven't checked to see if the programming is identical yet, though.

Frankly,AMC and TNT are big draws for me and why I am looking into it.

So far MY opinion is that it works as advertised, but there are a couple of negatives. The 2 big negatives is I don't see any way to record programs there yet,and the programming is hard to figure out. Frankly,I am spoiled by my Dish Network and Direct TV DVR's and their ability to check upcoming shows and record them instantly as well as VOD shows. Trying to find and view a program in episode order is at best "clunky" for me.

I may just decide at the end of the 7 days that it's worth another 80 bucks a month to have the convenience of recording and an excellent search engine from Dish or Direct. My time may not be worth much dollar wise, but it is worth something to me and I would rather spend it watching shows than trying to find them and remember when they come on.

What say yee?

Update your code c's.

That would be a lot easier to do if I knew what they are and where they are.

Not to mention how to use them.

You need to have something that is compatible with your video player.

There is an ap called plex for the roku. It plays almost all video types.

I downloaded a app from the Windows store named "Torrent" that had around 1900 positive votes and can't get it to play the videos.

I am using Win 8.1 if that makes any difference.

I am not trying to use my ROKU for this. I don't even know how to use it to download files from the web.

CODE C's are just files that "translate" different videos depending on what "language" they are in.

To get plex. You just look at the ROKU's free channels and add it.

It plays pretty much everything.

Also in the roku store. Is a channel called media player. That plays a lot of stuff too.

It is just like adding channels to your roku.

If you need a new media player for your PC.

Get VLC media player. It is open source and plays loads of types of files.

You could also use google to download a codec packet. Use a site like majorgeeks.com. They don't have adware in their downloads.

I have Netflix via ROKU. $7.99 per month and it streams movies to my TV (like YouTube streams to my computer).

Things you know already I'm sure.

My question is, piratebay is telling me I have to download their HD player first. How safe is that and why is that necessary? Second, I get the impression that you have to download the entire movie, then play it. True?

And third, what's with the "anonymous" download? Is this because it's illegal? (Note: A "little bit" illegal counts as illegal.)

When the pirate bay was shut down earlier this year. A site called isohunt cloned the pirate bay site. Now there are bunches of them.

Here is the real pirate bay

No player needed.

I think this pirate bay clone is ok too. Not positive

thepiratebay.se changes to thepiratebay.gd and you don't want to go to thepiratebay.cr (will lock up your computer with a warning screen).

"I don't know what the anonymous download is. I've seen it but never used it."

My guess is that it routes everything through an anonymizer website to hide identities. Which is why I asked the question about illegality.

If you need a new media player for your PC.

Get VLC media player. It is open source and plays loads of types of files.

I checked that out,and there are a bunch of people who say it doesn't work with Win 8.1.

In fact, when you go to the torrent players on the Win 8.1 Apps download page,it seems like none of the ones they offer work well (or at all) with Win 8.1.

You could also use google to download a codec packet. Use a site like majorgeeks.com.

I took your advise and went to major geeks and ended up downloading Bit Comet, and it works like a charm and was free. Supposed to be one of the most basic torrent players out there,it's perfect for my needs. My computer came with Power DVD,but I can't get it to open or update without having to pay extra, and I am not paying extra for something I am not certain will work for me.

I had no trouble viewing youtube videos,Amazon Prime,or Netflix videos on my computer before,so all I needed was a basic program to open and view torrent downloads.

I will be making a small donation to major geeks if it's still working this time next week with no problems.

Thanks for your help!

I own a slingbox. It allows me to watch cable tv from my American box when I am overseas.

You need high speed internet though. I need sling to stream Better Call Saul because then I will be in Europe and for Walking Dead.

You can switch channels from the remote on your pc or phone with sling box as well. No monthly fee. But you do pay for internet and for your cable/sat box.

I pay internet for two locations and a box. In Europe I don't have a box and just stream my cable box from the US.

They have dedicated boxes for downloading, storing, and playing?

I need sling to stream Better Call Saul

Aside from agreeing with you about putting both shows on my viewing list, why would you need to stream it? Surely they have sat dish receivers in Europe?

Can you provide me with a URL for the sling box? I might be interested in one if it can record and has a HDMI port for a portable HDD.

In Europe I don't have a box and just stream my cable box from the US.

How is that done? Do you have a Sat phone? If so,isn't that so expensive it would be cheaper to buy the DVD's?

I don't have one in Europe. I stream the show live as it is playing or stored via my cable box DVR. The sling box will play off your tivo the same way.

Sling box allows you legally to access your own cable or sat or whatever for remote viewing. All I need is high speed internet on both ends.

You're Welcome.

Also if you notice in Bit Comet. When the download finishes there is a little green play button you can use to play the videos in a built in player.

Another thing. When downloading complete seasons of things. You can right click and just check say the first few episodes. So that it downloads them first. Then add the others as you want to by right clicking again and starting the download again.

If you spend 35 bucks you can get a chrome cast.

Then you use the chrome browser with this extension added.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videostream-for-google- ch/cnciopoikihiagdjbjpnocolokfelagl?hl=en

Then it will send what you downloaded to your TV. Translates about everything and makes it the right size on your TV. Works great. Easy to use.

The first program I downloaded is namned Torrent. It did a good job of downloading, but I saw no option other than to download the whole season at once, and then 6+ hours later I couldn't even get it to play any of the episodes.

Bit Comet was falling off the log easy to use to load all 12 episodes in order for me to to play them, and there was no learning curve at all.

I'm going to try to use Bit Comet to download season 4 tonight so I can compare it with Torrent.

Frankly, I thought Bit Comet was just a player until you told me it would download the videos too.

Ok,here is an update.

Yesterday I opened and viewed a small part of the first torrent I downloaded yesterday, right after downloading Bit Comet, just to make sure everything worked.

It was episode 1 of season 3 of Homeland. That was one of my favorite shows, and I lost it when I cut back on my sat subscription. There are 12 episodes per season.

I downloaded season 4 last night, and Bit Comet was no quicker than Torrent downloading it,and a lot trickier to get to the download than Torrent was.Primarily because I never could figure out how to get Bit Comet to go to a URL address and Lime Torrents wasn't in their list of "Top Torrent Sites".

Took around 8 hours to download a 12 episode season both times.

I never was able to figure out how to make Lime Torrents a bookmark in Bit Comet but managed to download season 4 of Homeland from there anyhow. Not sure what I did or how I did it,though.

The bonus is/was that the Bit Comet player works great!

I may keep Torrents to use for downloading files, and Bit Comet for viewing and organizing them.

BTW,WTH are "peers" and "trackers"?

"peers" are other folks, like yourself, who have aready downloaded the file that you're downloading. So when you download a file using a torrent, your not dowloading from just one computer, but you're downloading bits & pieces of it from different "peers." "Trackers" are the computers that keep track of where the different peers are. After you download, they're keeping track of YOU, and as a peer, YOU will be contibuting bits & pieces of the file you download to other people who want to download it. This happens in the background and you don't even see it happening.

Often, not always. More true on big public torrent sites like PirateBay or KA, etc.

I am also on some private torrent sites where I almost never upload anything (or just upload a few MBs on a big torrent). On sites like that, you have to worry about keeping your download ratio in order. On some sites, they enforce that strictly, on some others they scold you a little but never kick you out for a low ratio.

You can upload any part of the file(s) as a peer as soon as you get even one valid file block.

A seeder has 100% of the file and is ready to upload it, whether anyone is actually downloading from them or not.

Took around 8 hours to download a 12 episode season both times.

That's not bad.

Flash drives are starting to be cheap enough to store old TV shows on. Or you can burn DVDs if you want to save up these shows. Or just store them on a 1TB backup drive.

Most TV shows come in 350MB versions. You could store 350 42-minute 350MB standard resolution TV shows on a $50 1TB USB3 drive, for instance. If you want HD shows at 720p, it takes more.

For what you guys are after, maybe TorrenTv would make sense. It's like a specialized upgraded Popcorn Time. It also has instant torrent streaming (like Netflix) and it is built for viewing torrents on your TV in the quickest and easiest way possible.

TorrentFreak: TorrenTV Instantly Streams Movie Torrents to Apple TV

BGR: Pirate paradise: New app streams movie torrents to Apple TV and Roku

http://torrentv.github.io/

I haven't tried it yet though. It's still in beta and the author is taking $1 donations. It started streaming only to AppleTV devices but they've added Roku (a special Roku channel) and Chromecast support. I know it has gotten good reviews from many websites and it is open-source.

I almost never save tv shows or movies anymore. I watch them and then delete them. Anytime I want to watch them again they are always out there somewhere to be found and viewed.

I do have a 1TB as well as a 2TB and a smaller portable HDd'S,though. Mostly because I record stuff and then wait until I have the time to watch them. I also record a lot of stuff on my Channel Master for later viewing, and you pretty much have to have a portable HDD if you use one of them because they don't have squat for file storage.

My question is, piratebay is telling me I have to download their HD player first.

ThePirateBay is a website only. It shows up looking like the Google start page.

If you are getting an app that calls itself PirateBay, it is from scammers. Don't install it!

The real website: https://thepiratebay.mn/

You get the torrent files from PB or another site like KickAssTorrentz. To use the torrent file to download videos (or other files), you need a Torrent client program.

You can try downloading the files with uTorrent, the easiest and most popular of modern torrent client downloaders.

I suspect Netflix (that already has Showtime as a extra cost option) will soon be matching that price.

BitComet is compatible is Magnet/eMule links/downloads (eMule is an older BitTorrent-like protocol you will likely never use). It can also handle large HTTP and FTP downloads (which you are also very unlikely to use).

There is no reason to use their crapware BitComet AV player. Just use VLC like everyone else does.

Put bluntly, there is no reason for a new user to pick up BitComet. It is a legacy client. Much like the Opera web browser, the only people using it are the diehards that have used it for years. Everyone else has long since moved on to better torrent clients. Like uTorrent. There is no reason for a new torrent user like you to pick up BitComet. I assume you just liked the name or something.

If you want integrated media player, transcoding, uPNP/DLNA for LAN streaming, you should get Vuze/Azureus. But Vuze is written in Java, a security problem. I gave up Vuze after being loyal to it for years because I couldn't keep using something that had constant security issues. uTorrent has relatively few features but it does the basics well.

You would be better off to use VLC or Plex or XBMC as your player than to get tied to BitComet just because they offer a crapware AV player (based on mplayer source code). Or you could try the new TorrenTV combo torrent/streamer I mentioned above (based on the open-source PopcornTime software). As a side note, all of these (VLC/Plex/XBMC/PopcornTime/TorrenTV) and many others are based on the same old open-source mplayer software. VLC is the best-tested and most widely used of the whole bunch.
