A New Orleans police officer was found shot dead in his marked patrol car this morning, city officials said.

The shooting was reported around 7 a.m., the New Orleans Police Department said in a news release. The victim's car rolled forward and struck a curb after the shooting.

The officer's name has not been released, but the New Orleans police identified the victim as a 45-year-old man who worked as a Housing Authority police officer.

A Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) police officer "Investigates complaints, maintains order, aids individuals, and identifies criminal offenders," according to a summary of the position on hano.org. The officers also perform "unplanned physical tasks which include the restraining of violent individuals, running, climbing fences and responding to EMS and rescue emergencies. Officers must handle gun belts," the summary said.

The officer had been a member of the HANO Police Department since 2013, according to the police press release. The police department declined to comment further.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a statement: "The death of this HANO police officer is an unspeakable tragedy, and a vile and cowardly act. Tragedies that involve our men and women in uniform affect our entire city and touch every member of our law enforcement community. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our hearts and prayers are with the officer's friends and family and with the entire HANO family during this very difficult time.

"NOPD and HANO will work very closely to identify and arrest those responsible for this heinous assault. NOPD and HANO are part of the same close-knit law enforcement family that puts their lives on the line to protect and serve the people of New Orleans. Never are we more aware of the risk they face every day than we are on terrible days like this."

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating.

They haven't a clue what happened yet. It's as likely as not, that the heinous assailant was about to be performed by the project cop/drug kingpin. The citizen "feared for his life".

He should have jumped on the hood of the cop car and pumped at least 15 rounds into it though, to establish his innocence. Judges like that sort of passionate defense.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the police are looking for a black suspect,or suspects. Even though they are trying mightily to not use the words "black" and "suspect" in the same sentence.

It's been a while since I've looked into the matter, so maybe they've recently gotten their act together, but for decades, the epitome of a "bad cop" was just about the entire New Orleans police force.

Good guess pete.

From another article... "Cynthia Wiggins, president and CEO of the Guste Community, told The New Orleans Advocate that she talked to everyone living across the street from the block where the officer was shot, and none of them had heard any gunshots or confrontation".

Probably "payback" for Trayvon or Ferguson or slavery.

They don't realize the cops can play the same "payback" game. And they're better at it.

Or rather you must realize that they DO target blacks at a higher frequency than other races because of preconceived notions of them, and are even starting to harass "others" and get away with it too.

I don't know why you think you're on "their" side.

EDIT: before you call me a Leftist or a Liberal (LOL) realize that I am a moderate with an inclination to be conservative socially. Ah! The dreaded racial profiling. Like this guy:

"There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery. Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved....
--Jesse Jackson, 1993

It's called reality. And blacks own it. And blacks continue to own it with their wilding on the streets and parks, knockout games, and flash mobs robbing stores.

Whites are supposed to ignore that? White cops are supposed to ignore that? Not if they want to see their wife and children later.

Sorry. Jesse made those remarks over 20 years ago and nothing has changed. White attitudes won't change until black behavior changes.

Yes and no.

To completely blame it on the criminal behavior of blacks as if it were an instinctive trait and not the fact that many members of lower socioeconomic groups behave out more impulsively and recklessly is dangerous.

So is completely blaming it on the government and not putting the blame on these lower socioeconomic classed blacks.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with both the "blacks are just criminal by nature" view AND the "the white man/government oppresses the black people and they are completely innocent of their actions" view. Both are immature, impractical narratives and tend to favor the prejudices of the person saying it than the actual REALITY.

Are whites supposed to view any black as a potential suspect and criminal? Even the ones of a higher socioeconomic group?

This is why *some blacks DISTRUST whites in general, because many whites view all blacks as bad and evil instead of making the intelligent judgement of avoiding the lower socioeconomic classed ones.

Your statement also ignores many HISTORICAL and CULTURAL influences. How can you comment upon a subject you only see from outside, truthfully, and feel no beam on your conscience about it? Amazing.

* = the vast majority of blacks want to assimilate into white American culture and try to gain their approval and judge most of their people first than others. You are confusing black nationalists as the whole face as the black community. Couldn't be more wrong.

I don't. I don't know anyone who does.

"... and not the fact that many members of lower socioeconomic groups behave out more impulsively and recklessly"

Now THAT I do take into consideration, especially when those "members" are black.

"How can you comment upon a subject you only see from outside"

I've seen it from the inside. Plus I can read. And most of the stories I read are about blacks committing crimes.

"In Atlanta, African-Americans are 54 percent of the population, but are responsible for 100 percent of homicide, 95 percent of rape, 94 percent of robbery, 84 percent of aggravated assault, and 93 percent of burglary."
--APD Uniform Crime Reports, Apr 2011 to Apr 2012

"(Black) Judge Marvin Arrington insists he's not a racist; despite ordering white lawyers out of his courtroom on Thursday. The Fulton County Superior Court judge said he was just fed up seeing a parade of young black defendants in his courtroom."

"I came out and saw the defendants, about 99.9 percent Afro-Americans, and some point time I excused some of the lawyers, most of them white, and said to the young people in here 'What in the world are you doing with your lives,'" he told WSB-TV Channel 2 reporter JaQuitta Williams.

"And I just said, my God. Will we ever stop? We are executing each other. They appeal before me. They can't read. They cannot write, have no character, no morals, or what have you. And I just exploded."

"I don't. I don't know anyone who does."

I browse the internet a lot, and see a lot of people pulling up worn-out, regurgitated studies and anecdotal evidence to prove that it is indeed true.

"Now THAT I do take into consideration, especially when those 'members' are black."

You must remember that Hispanics are also frequently in this class too, and that poorer whites in rural areas will be in this class too.

"I've seen it from the inside. Plus I can read. And most of the stories I read are about blacks committing crimes."

Have you interacted with blacks of a higher socioeconomic variety and read the discussions between them in message boards? Not all of them want to kill whitey, you know.

Sometimes fear and prejudice can get so strong that you cannot distinguish the two and discriminate against the good behaving ones. Many people, unfortunately, do this to any group perceived to be lower class (read: Romanis in Europe, Algerians in France, ect)

Also, the cause of violence is not them just randomly acting out - it is often to do with the politics and cultural influence of the group. For example, rap and other dangerous forms of media (like glorifying drugs, sleeping around, shooting, being hard, even suburban white kids and others are starting to glorify it) are pushed on blacks by the music/entertainment industry with a exploitative financial purpose.

Many blacks aren't aware of this and feed into the nonsense, some do and speak out, and others get mad about it but are too busy fighting the people who want to group them with the actions of others too.

Then there is the hardship of the destructive family structure (that is worse in black communities but also bad in other communities in America too aside from Asians but we're not going there.)

It's a very difficult situation.

"I browse the internet a lot, and see a lot of people pulling up worn-out, regurgitated studies and anecdotal evidence to prove that it is indeed true."

That all blacks instinctively engage in criminal behavior? I don't see how anyone can argue that. They'd come across as ignorant fools.

"You must remember that Hispanics are also frequently in this class too, and that poorer whites in rural areas will be in this class too."

Yeah, but they aren't dominating the news.

"It's a very difficult situation."

Opportunities for blacks have never been better in the history of our country. Yet they don't take advantage of them.

Other minority groups thrive in our country -- Asians, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese ... even Muslims. And those people used to be our enemies! If we were truly a racist country, I'd think those nationalities would be at the top of the list!

Here's the problem: 75% of blacks in prison grew up without a father. Gee, thanks, mom.

Now, maybe you can twist that into being the fault of racist whites, but I don't see how.

So, I take it as you completely ignoring the things that I said and only payed attention to ones that did NOT favor your position (but neither the opposing argument). Yeah, I see you.

Also, the history and cultural influences of the African-American group is vastly different from all those ethnicities.

It does seem more of a cultural rather than a racial thing. I believe each American citizen should be judged based upon who they are rather than what they are. I feel that racial discrimination is an immoral thing, be it based upon Jim Crow or affirmative action. It is not the way I would want to be treated, and not the way I would want to treat another.

Historically blacks in America have often been exploited economically, starting with slavery but by no means ending there. A lot of racial animosities in the north were created by the importation of southern blacks as strikebreakers, who most often were recruited without being informed that they were being hired only as long as it took to break the union, then they were to left unemployed far from home once the strike was over.

Nope. I simply ignored your strawman arguments (ie., not all blacks are criminals), your irrelevant arguments (Hispanics and poor whites act out, too), and your idiotic arguments (rap music is to blame).

Hmmmm. You're right. Not much left.

"the history and cultural influences of the African-American group is vastly different from all those ethnicities"

Another strawman -- I never said they were the same. I said that I found it odd that this racist country is only racist towards blacks when there are far more deserving targets.

Wow. Here you are putting all African-Americans into one group in order to explain their behavior. Yet when others do that, you complain that it's unfair to judge an entire group by the actions of a few.

Judgmental and a overzealous moron, how totally unexpected.

Using regurgitated statements like "ANOTHER STRAWMAN LULZ!" and getting offended at what I'm saying makes me turned off from further conversation from you. Now go back into your box and debate with someone you won't insult and act like an ass with.

Blaming rap music -- which the black community encourages and rewards -- for black violence IS an idiotic argument. You DO realize that the majority of victims are black, don't you?

To explain what?

The lawlessness and the violence of blacks? Dropping out of school? Joining a gang? Committing felonies? To explain why a single mom has a half- dozen kids by a half-dozen different men?

How long are you going to use that "slavery" crutch? It's not as though you were one.
