Title: Feds Spent $100 Billion on Food Assistance Last Year

109,930,090 Americans participated in overlapping programs

The federal government spent $100 billion providing food assistance to Americans last year, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The lion’s share of spending comes from the food stamp program, which gave benefits to an average 46 million Americans in 2014, at a cost of $74.6 billion, according to a testimonyfrom the GAO’s Director of Education, Workforce, and Income Security Kay E. Brown before the House Subcommittee on Nutrition Wednesday.

The national school lunch program was second, costing $11.3 billion, followed by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at $7.1 billion.

Other spending included $1.9 billion for nutrition assistance for Puerto Rico, and $10.7 million for the “Special Milk Program.”

Brown said there is a potential for overlap and “inefficient use of federal funds” due to the government’s “complex network of 18 food assistance programs, administered by three federal agencies,” which are unsure how effective the programs are.

“In 2010, research GAO reviewed suggested that participation in seven of these programs was associated with positive outcomes, such as improving nutrition among low-income households,” Brown said. “Little was known about the effectiveness of the remaining 11.”

The GAO provided a list of the 18 federal programs, which together served a total 109.9 million Americans in 2014. The list only provides the total number of participants for each program, and does not take into account the potential for individuals to participate in more than one program.

Brown said the GAO urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) address potential overlaps in their programs. The USDA commissioned a study on redundant programs in 2013, and then “decided to study the impact of participation in multiple food assistance programs on the nutritional status of participants.”

“While such a study will provide important information, it does not address GAO’s recommendation,” Brown said. “GAO continues to believe that further action is needed.”

"All the money spent on war death and destruction and not giving food to the poor is the hill your GOP ilk want to die on?"

Seems obvious to me that if they want to eat they should join the military where all the spending is taking place.

Not giving food to the poor? We gave them $100 billion worth.

Yeah - looks like the money is being spent on expanding the empire, not on ensuring that the troops have enough to live on.

Then why are there still poor in America if you are such good Christians?

Because the people you vote for ensure there will always be plenty of people in poverty, that's what you Catholics want isn't it??

To survive as a society, we need the roads maintained, our borders defended, the structure fires extinguished and the criminals apprehended... But we don't need to feed the lazy able bodied so they generationally spawn more dependent turds. We can survive without them.

Our forefathers designed limited government and taxes to fund it... but their design didn't contain one penny for the lazy... so you pay for it. Don't ask me to.

Btw, officers, teachers, military and firefighters WORK AND EARN their pay checks... leaches don't "earn" or contribute to social services... they just leach and spawn more leaches.

That's what they've been doing over the last 45 years, indoctrinating the sheep to think we are "equal"... and we are not equal.

In today's news, Arizona is proposing limiting welfare to one year. That's a start.

Governor Doug Ducey is weighing in on sharp cuts to Arizona residents on welfare.

The Arizona Legislature ended lifetime benefits to low-income families after just 12 months.

The Governor calls the cuts necessary to protect education and other programs.

But those who rely on the help call the cuts unfair.

Critics say taxpayers may have to foot additional costs because those who are most vulnerable may not get the assistance they need.

"What we want to do is transition people out of the social safety net into gainful employment," said Arizona Governor Doug Ducey.

Gov. Ducey says the move came as legislators worked to close the state's $1 billion budget deficit.

>>VIDEO: Sen. Kelli Ward on why Arizona is cutting back on welfare

The program that receives funding from the Federal Government, and provides money to families in need, saved about $4 million taxpayer dollars.

"We had a budget to balance, we balanced it in a bi-partisan way, through our reforms we have protected the developmentally disabled, we have protected seniors, and the best reform here is a job and an opportunity in a growing economy," he said.

According to the Arizona Department of Economic Security, the average stay on the program is about 14 months, and a single parent with two kids can receive a maximum of just under $280 a month.

"We all want the people to find work, and the last time I checked the unemployment rate in Arizona was higher than the United States average. That means people looking for jobs cannot find them. So then to punish people and say we are letting you fall into crisis is a very damaging policy for the whole state," said Dana Naimark with the Children's Action Alliance.

Naimark and the Alliance lobbied against the cuts at the legislature. They point out that to be in the program the parent has to be actively looking for work. The changes are estimated to effect 1,700 families, and that includes about 2,700 children.

"This is to save $4 million in a $9 billion budget, that is ridiculous. This was not a choice anybody had to make. This is something some legislators wanted to do, and it is a bad idea," she said.

And not a single mention of illegal aliens and how it would effect them, the terminology used was "Arizona residents".

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”
