Title: Feds Spent $100 Billion on Food Assistance Last Year

109,930,090 Americans participated in overlapping programs

The federal government spent $100 billion providing food assistance to Americans last year, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The lion’s share of spending comes from the food stamp program, which gave benefits to an average 46 million Americans in 2014, at a cost of $74.6 billion, according to a testimonyfrom the GAO’s Director of Education, Workforce, and Income Security Kay E. Brown before the House Subcommittee on Nutrition Wednesday.

The national school lunch program was second, costing $11.3 billion, followed by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at $7.1 billion.

Other spending included $1.9 billion for nutrition assistance for Puerto Rico, and $10.7 million for the “Special Milk Program.”

Brown said there is a potential for overlap and “inefficient use of federal funds” due to the government’s “complex network of 18 food assistance programs, administered by three federal agencies,” which are unsure how effective the programs are.

“In 2010, research GAO reviewed suggested that participation in seven of these programs was associated with positive outcomes, such as improving nutrition among low-income households,” Brown said. “Little was known about the effectiveness of the remaining 11.”

The GAO provided a list of the 18 federal programs, which together served a total 109.9 million Americans in 2014. The list only provides the total number of participants for each program, and does not take into account the potential for individuals to participate in more than one program.

Brown said the GAO urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) address potential overlaps in their programs. The USDA commissioned a study on redundant programs in 2013, and then “decided to study the impact of participation in multiple food assistance programs on the nutritional status of participants.”

“While such a study will provide important information, it does not address GAO’s recommendation,” Brown said. “GAO continues to believe that further action is needed.”

Its a perfect union. Big daddy gov manufacturing sheeple/voters... and what disgusts me most, my peers so quick to live in servitude.

Feeding the wild animals causes dependency... and of course, any animal will take it for free instead of hunting for it.

John McCain made that sincere offer and not one person took him up on it.

Democrats would rather be on food stamps.

George Bush had nothing to do with the offer.

McCain owns a lettuce farm? How will someone take him up on that offer if the farm is imaginary?

Damn, and I just took a job picking cabbage for $45 an hour! Fucking lettuce.

Just sent him an e-mail through his Senate website:

Dear Senator McCain,

During your address to the Building and Construction Trades Department Conference, you publicly offered to pay $50 an hour for people willing to come to Yuma, Arizona for the summer to pick lettuce.

I would like to sign up for this position. I am an educated, professional, American citizen, and would really enjoy the extra money I could earn if I switched to a career picking lettuce.

You did not provide any contact information during your address. I understand that you don't use e-mail or the internet, so I must assume that applicants must submit their resumes to you via the U.S. Mail. If so, which address should I send it to? I've tried finding your home address, but I've come across seven different home addresses and I'm unsure which would be appropriate.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to a new career in the lucrative lettuce industry.

Sincerely, Papalmonkey

I graduated from college and work 40 hours a week, but still go further into debt every month- mostly because of my son's medical condition. I would love to make $50/hour. So, McCain, where do I sign? I am more than willing to work hard.

Pluth 9 points 6 years ago*

Picking lettuce is hardly a "shit job." I did it in high school during the summer when I *couldn't drive a car. You might get a little dirty, but it isn't hard work.

===

jjschnei 79 points 6 years ago

I'd pick lettuce for 100k a year. Fresh air, sunshine, nice view. Beats the hell out of working in a cubicle staring at a screen all day and getting paid a third of that.

===

Omikron 146 points 6 years ago

Don't belittle the difficulty of the job. I grew up in a farming community, and have picked several types of farm crops. Believe me it is not fucking easy.

Still for 50 dollars an hour I'd pick pimples of McCain's ass for 10 hours a day.

Don't belittle the difficulty of the job. I grew up in a dermatology community, and have picked several types of ass pimples. Believe me it's not fucking easy.

Still for 50 dollars an hour I'd pick lettuce off of McCain's farm for ten hours a day.

mingdamirthless 18 points 6 years ago

I also grew up on a farm, and picked squash, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, WATERMELONS, etc.

I agree, it can be extremely hot and tiring work. But let's be honest, we worked for 5 dollars an hour. For $50 an hour, we could've hired up to an including some lawyers in town to pick our crops.

The fact of the matter is, McCain is out of touch with how hard some people work for a living in this country.

that was the nastiest visual i've been subjected to in a LONG time.

Fuck yeah. What did I go to college for? My degree is worthless and not even in the field I work in! Someone tell me where this $50/hour job is!

===

[deleted] 19 points 6 years ago

McCain meant "toss salad" not "pick lettuce", it's an old Navy term

===

imquez 2 points 6 years ago

Really, I could've swore I heard "let us pick" 50 dollars from your pocket.

===

asaturn 6 points 6 years ago

when you sit on your ass for all but one week per year in the senate, making $200,000+ ... picking lettuce for $50/hr seems like slave labor.
