Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) weighed in on one of the week's most hot button political controversies with a statement issued late Monday evening expressing support for Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) and the state's proposed "religious freedom" law.

Critics have said Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which was signed by Pence last week, would allow discrimination against lesbians and gays. Its supporters, including Pence, have denied this and said it simply promotes religious freedom.

In his statement, Cruz, who launched his 2016 presidential campaign last Monday, described the law as an effort to support "religious liberty."

"I want to commend Governor Mike Pence for his support of religious freedom, especially in the face of fierce opposition. There was a time, not too long ago, when defending religious liberty enjoyed strong bipartisan support. Alas, today we are facing a concerted assault on the First Amendment, on the right of every American to seek out and worship God according to the dictates of his or her conscience," Cruz said. "Governor Pence is holding the line to protect religious liberty in the Hoosier State. Indiana is giving voice to millions of courageous conservatives across this country who are deeply concerned about the ongoing attacks upon our personal liberties. I'm proud to stand with Mike, and I urge Americans to do the same."

Since he officially launched his White House bid last week, Cruz has made it clear he hopes to appeal to grassroots conservatives and the religious right. Pence has said he's also considering running for president.

Legal experts have been divided on the impact of the law, which will take effect July 1. Many supporters say it was simply designed to make it more difficult for the government to interfere with peoples' religious practices. Some opponents argue it would allow individuals to use religion as an excuse to deny housing, employment, or services to gays and lesbians.

The law has led to widespread backlash from business leaders, politicians, and even celebrities.

Last Saturday, Pence told the Indianapolis Star newspaper that he would try to find "a way to clarify the intent of the law" to make clear that it does not promote discrimination. However, in an interview with ABC the following day, he declined to address whether the law would allow anti-gay discrimination. On Monday, the Republican leaders of the Legislature said they would find a fix to "clarify" the law and make clear it is not discriminatory.

As of this writing, Cruz's campaign has not responded to an email asking whether he supports the law being clarified.

"he declined to address whether the law would allow anti-gay discrimination."

The only alternative is to allow anti-religion discrimination, right? Aren't gays telling business owners that they must violate their religious beliefs?

Given that we have the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution protecting religious freedom, I'd say it's clear whose rights are protected.

These laws are not some immunity shield to allow discrimination.

These RFRA laws actually just mean that you don't automatically lose every case brought against you on religious grounds. Under RFRA, you can and may still lose your case but you won't lose before you even get into court and present your defense.

Pence must be frustrated at how ridiculously overblown this has become. It really is a very minor matter that the Left and libmedia (and Facebook/Google/Twitter) have had a hatefest over.

I've noticed that very few people seem to understand just how modest this law is in Indiana or in the other states that passed it (or affirmed it by court action) or in federal jurisdictions.

In no case do these RFRA laws shield you from a lawsuit. They just guarantee you get a chance to defend your refusal of service on religious grounds.

Tempest, teapot. And that has become a dagger in the hands of the Left in the Twitterverse and with the Facebook zombies.

Ridiculous that we need a law telling us we can defend our right to religious freedom.

Ridiculous that we need a law telling us we can defend our right to religious freedom.

Well, it is only needed because of the rampant antidiscrimination laws that would otherwise make defendants lose any case before they could even get into court. I'm not saying I agree, just that is the purpose. Which is why Schumer and all the Dems voted unanimously for the federal version and Xlinton signed it into law.

In the last 20 years, RFRA has never been used to defend a discrimination case against Teh Holy Gays.

HotAir, today:

1) Most recent RFRA winner: Lipan Apache religious leader Robert Soto

Just a few weeks ago, on March 10, the federal government returned the eagle feathers it had seized nine years prior from a Native American religious leader and famed feather dancer Robert Soto. He had appealed the seizure of the eagle feathers, for which he faced 15 years in a federal penitentiary and a $250,000 fine, on Religious Freedom Restoration Act grounds.

The feds had sent undercover agents to a powwow in 2006 to confiscate the feathers, which are central to Soto’s Native American faith. The federal government prohibits possession of eagle feathers without a permit and only grants permits to museums, scientists, zoos, farmers, large power companies and federally recognized tribes. Even though the Lipan Apaches are recognized by the State of Texas, historians and sociologists, they’re not recognized by the feds.

2) An arbitrary ban: Sikh federal employee Kawal Tagore

After being baptized in the Sikh faith, Kawal Tagore began carrying a kirpan, “an emblem resembling a small knife with a blunt, curved blade” that reminds Sikhs of their commitment to justice. It’s one of five articles of faith baptized Sikhs are supposed to carry.

She was told to go home from her job with the IRS in a federal building in Houston and told not to return. The building allowed scissors, knives, box cutters and other items with far sharper blades than her kirpan, but they wouldn’t let her carry her religiously required emblem. After working from home for nine months, she was fired.

She sought protection under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and on November 4, 2014, the government agreed to settle the case.

The Left is just having a stink for the sake of an attack on the evils of Christianity. It is a deliberate strategy of ongoing and unceasing attacks, usually bogus, on religious people and religious liberty.

Heh-heh.

Like all the others, Rand is trying to carve off his own slice of the evangelical vote in IA and SC. Tough going with Huck, Walker and Cruz in the field.
