Title: Senior Citizen Held at Gunpoint, Forced to Remove Clothes in Public, Jailed, for Driving Classic Car (Cops "protecting and serving")

Because of the negligent actions of the Nevada Highway Patrol, a couple was humiliated, and their lives threatened, for stealing a car they actually owned.

Robin and Beverly Bruins were out for a drive in their classic car, when incompetent cops confused their license information and pulled them over.

“Driver! Remove your keys from the ignition and put them on the roof now!” screams the trooper over his loud speaker.

At first Robin Bruins found it funny that the senior citizen couple, who broke no laws, was being pulled over. But that changed quickly.

“Actually, I think I might have giggled to Bev saying, ‘well, I don’t know what this is all about’ and I put the keys on there,” Robin Bruins said. “And I turned and looked back and saw three gun barrels pointed at me. And, obviously it hit me. Whoa! What’s going on here? To this day, I have never experienced anything like looking down the barrel of guns like that.”

Multiple officers were shouting multiple different commands, which were conflicting. Fortunately, Bruins wasn’t shot for listening to one command while simultaneously disobeying another during the confusion.

In broad daylight, and on the side of the road Robin Bruins was forced to take off his shirt and hold his hands in the air while several officers drew down on this innocent senior citizen.

Bruins told KLAS, “And it wasn’t until I had taken my shirt off and told to get on my knees and handcuffed, and I said, ‘What’s going on? Do you think this car is stolen or something?’ And he said, ‘exactly right. And their car is going back to its rightful owner.’”

In the meantime, a different set of officers has their guns drawn on Robin’s wife Beverly, who is in the passenger seat with a broken leg. She was forced from the car at gunpoint and then told to walk backward — with a broken leg.

“I got out of the car and I thought, how am I gonna walk back without crutches?” she said. “So, I went to reach for my crutches in the back seat, and they yelled at me, ‘Keep — we said keep your hands in the air and walk backward towards us.’”

Luckily Beverly wasn’t filled with bullets for attempting to grab her crutches.

crto_zoneid = window.innerWidth>=990?206278:206279;

“And then she (the trooper) ran a check on my license plate and came back and un-handcuffed me and asked me if I’d like to say goodbye to my husband,” Beverly Bruins said. “And I said, ‘goodbye to my husband? Where’s my husband going?’ And she said, ‘well, he’s going to jail.’ So I went over to see Rob, and he’s in the back seat with no shirt on, hands behind his back and tears are running down his face.”

Robin Bruins was subsequently taken to jail and thrown in a general population holding cell, where he would be denied his medication.

“And I said, ‘well I’m past the time for my medications, can I take those now?’” he said. “You know, thinking that he was going to give ‘em to me. And they said, ‘no, you can’t have anything you brought with you.’”

After Beverly Bruins had found a hotel room, she went to the jail to try and get her husband out. It was at the jail where she discovered the police incompetence that got them humiliated, almost killed, and her husband behind bars.

Restored plates, issued in the same year a classic car was made are legal in Washington state. However, when the trooper decided to run the plates on this car, he forgot to add a + sign to the beginning of the number, so it came back to the wrong vehicle.

That’s what got the couple unlawfully pulled over.

The incompetence continued after the car was stopped. When the trooper called in the VIN to dispatch, the dispatcher entered the wrong number into the computer. The random wrong number happened to be for a stolen car.

The situation was terrible, but with a few different variables, it could have been deadly.

The couple has since filed a lawsuit against the officers and head of the highway patrol for civil rights violations. And now it will be the taxpaying citizens of Nevada, who are held responsible for the gross incompetence of these officers.

Why would they even pull the car over? No complaint filed I assume. I also assume they thought this car was a prize for confiscation. The cops have now turned into pirates, looking to take what they want to line their pockets. I DON"T RECOGNIZE MY COUNTRY!!!

The training of these officers and the on-duty failure of their supervisor is directly to blame for this.

This should have been no more than a stop with either the officers or the supervisor catching the error long before the suspect was transported from the scene. These problems with Nevada classics plates cannot possibly be unknown to its highway patrol. So, poor training and inadequate supervision.

Now NHP will pay through the nose. A false arrest, cruel and humiliating treatment, jailed without medication...should be enough for Gramps to buy himself a Lamborghini. Which still doesn't make it right. Or fair to taxpayers.

Poor training, inadequate supervision.

. . . [A little later...]

I looked for more info and found the apparent source of this FTP story. The opening of it is all the same.

This FTP version mentions only one computer mistake. The original story says two computer errors by different police agents was involved:
The registration, which the couple provided to a trooper, shows the historical plate in a box called “equipment number.” The actual plate number is in another box. The trooper ran that number but he didn't include a “plus” sign so it came back to the wrong vehicle.

That was error number one.

Error number two came when the trooper radioed the correct “vin” number of the car into dispatch. But the dispatcher entered the wrong number into the computer, and the erroneous number came back to a stolen car, similar to the one belonging to the couple.

The Bruins said they can understand an honest mistake, even two. What they don't understand is why officers didn't act on what appeared to be their own belief that the Bruins might be innocent victims.

As recorded by the dash camera, a trooper gets on the phone and tells his supervisor about Robin Bruins: “I tend to believe him. I mean I'm gonna run him before I make a determination ... the guy comes back with possession … or a history of something like that. If he's lying to me, that's a different story. But, as of right now, I mean, he seems to be legit.”

Despite a clean criminal history check, Robin Bruins was hauled off to jail.

“I mean, he was on the phone with his supervisor, talked to other officers when they got there, talked to another officer at the detention center when I got there,” Robin Bruins said. “And they all agreed that I should be behind bars. And that is just incredible.”

It surprises me that FTP left out these details which just make the NHP look even more stupid and legally culpable for false arrest.

At what point do the doubts of your field officer about whether the guy is a hood overrule the need to double-check the computer queries? That will make a rich payoff for these victims in a lawsuit.

So a little less on poor officer training and much more on poor supervision habits.

The story ends:
The I-Team sought comment from the highway patrol but agency spokeswoman Gail Powell wrote via email: “We are unable to discuss any specifics concerning on-going litigation matters.”

No comment. Yep. It's definitely already hit the fan.

Why was he ordered to take off his shirt?

Why draw weapons on a "suspected" unarmed car thief?

I don't get it.

I don't get it.

I think the jury will. Except the NHP will settle long before a jury gets empaneled. And the usual confidentiality agreements will gag the couple.

"is why officers didn't act on what appeared to be their own belief that the Bruins might be innocent victims."

Because if they gave a pass to a well-to-do, elderly, white couple, Jesse and Al would be screaming WHITE PRIVILEGE at the top of their lungs and filing a $100 million Civil Rights discrimination lawsuit against the State of Nevada -- and winning.

That's why.

And the police make a few hundred more enemies.

Folks, you need to avoid driving through the City of Rio Ranchio, NM at all cost, they have Red Light Cameras and SUV’s parked on the side of the road that take pictures and issue tickets, and because these tickets, they start at one hundred dollars, are not criminal, like those issued by the real police, but are civil, you do not have the right to demand to see the calibration dates, who calibrated them or ask for any other evidence that they don’t want to give you.

"Why draw weapons on a "suspected" unarmed car thief?"

First, they had reason to believe he WAS a car thief, making him a felon. Second, he wasn't unarmed. The car itself is a weapon.

So, an individual in the act of committing a felony while "armed" is a sufficient legal reason for the cops to draw their weapons.

Not shoot. Not kill. Draw.

I also assume they thought this car was a prize for confiscation.

BINGO!

It's called "Badge shopping". Even if they have to give back the stuff the confiscate, they still get to have it to play with for months while the court cases are being settled, and oftentimes the rightful owners just give it up because it is costing them more money to go to court to get their stuff back than the stuff is worth.

This has nothing to do with racial profiling or a hustler like Sharpton.

That you think it is connected to profiling is just your regular Personal Daily Craze.

"This has nothing to do with racial profiling or a hustler like Sharpton."

Correct. Because the driver was arrested.

I said if he wasn't arrested because he was a well-to-do, elderly white man -- yet a poor black kid would have been -- then it would have everything to do with racial profiling to a hustler like Sharpton.

When the trooper called in the VIN to dispatch,

The trooper should have ran the VIN on his CAD in his patrol car before he transported the driver anywhere.

Should be a decent sized lawsuit for these folks if the article is accurate.
