What Obama did say was not needed and was clunky. It was also impolitic as in bad politics. The only reason I can think for Obama to say this is because he is of Muslim origins himself (I don't think he is a Muslim - he is a Christian for politics sake but probably an atheist like most presidents have been) and wants to defend a religion he is sympathetic to or maybe he wants to tampen down war fever talk in Washington by neocons who want the USA to return to Iraq and get more involved in Syria. With that said, Jindal's remark was witty in that classic British dry wit style.
