FILE - A picture taken just after the liberation by the Soviet army in January, 1945, shows a group of children wearing concentration camp uniforms behind barbed wire fencing in the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp. On Thursday Jan. 22, 2015, Russia accused Poland of engaging in a “mockery of history” after the Polish foreign minister Grzegorz Schetyna credited Ukrainian soldiers, rather than the Soviet Red Army, with liberating Auschwitz 70-years ago. The latest exchange comes prior to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops on Jan. 27, 1945, underlining deep tensions between Russia and Poland, which is hugely critical of Russia's recent actions in Ukraine. SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — The tattoo on her left arm has become unreadable but the habit of reading it aloud in Polish remains strong, seven decades after it first scarred her skin.

Greta Wienfeld Ferusic had to yell A9233, in Polish, for 10 months during the morning lineups at the Nazi-run death camp of Auschwitz, the last time shortly before the Red Army arrived on Jan. 27, 1945, liberating the emaciated inmates. Worldwide events this week are commemorating that agonizing moment in history.

"To physically survive is the easier part," Ferusic, 90, said during an interview in her Sarajevo living room as she recalled her survival in a camp where more than 1.1 million Jews like her were killed. "What's important is that you do not go insane. That's the part you can work on. I kept repeating: I will survive, I will survive."

Ferusic was 19 when she and her parents, two aunts and an uncle were forced from their homes in Novi Sad, Serbia, and loaded on a cargo train in April 1944.

Dr. Joseph Mengele, known as the Angel of Death, personally separated her from her mother but never performed any medical experiments on her. It was the last time she ever saw her family.

Ferusic credits her survival to the Nazis' desire to cover up their genocide as the Soviets drew near. German troops destroyed the crematoriums in November 1944, providing a lifeline for Ferusic, who in December told camp authorities she was ill.

"Before November, if you would admit you are sick, there was only one place they would send you," she said, referring to the crematoriums. But German authorities then turned a barracks beside the crematoriums into a hospital.

Three days before liberation, hospitalized prisoners were told that whoever could walk should move toward a waiting train for evacuation west. Ferusic refused and convinced others to disobey. Most of those who followed orders ended up at the Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany.

For an entire day, no guard entered the hospital. Wrapped in a blanket, Ferusic strolled out to look for food. Corpses lay in the snow. In one of the guards' rooms, she found a frozen pot of soup and a Nazi soldier who, surprisingly, ran away from her.

When the Red Army arrived, they fed the survivors slowly because too much food, they explained, would kill them. But Ferusic said she couldn't resist and ate "day and night."

She weighed just 33 kilograms (73 pounds) when the Russians first weighed her, but reached 43 kilograms (95 pounds) three weeks later, when she hopped on the roof of a train for the long journey home. She hoped to find a surviving relative waiting for her, but all had perished in the Holocaust.

How can the Jews ever forgive the Germans for what they did?

Time heals all wounds.

How could the English and French ever forgive each other, given all of the horrors they perpetrated on each other for 1000 years?

Time.

Well, first...

http://www.google.com/#q=Luthera...rtin+Luther%22+Mein+Kampf

...responsibility must be acknowledged by the "engineers of human souls".

"Since the 1980s, some Lutheran church bodies have formally denounced and dissociated themselves from Luther's vitriol about the Jews. In November 1998, on the 60th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Lutheran Church of Bavaria issued a statement: "It is imperative for the Lutheran Church, which knows itself to be indebted to the work and tradition of Martin Luther, to take seriously also his anti-Jewish utterances, to acknowledge their theological function, and to reflect on their consequences. It has to distance itself from every [expression of] anti-Judaism in Lutheran theology."[26"

Only if the world allows people to forget the barbaric atrocities perpetrated by the German people on Jews and others. I am not Jewish but I will never forget the first time I saw the tatto on the arm of the mother of my Jewish childhood friend. The impact of that sight will be with me until the day I die. And I shared my experience and feelings about this with my wife and daughter. Time should not be allowed to erase what was done, this was far beyond any human expectation of turning the other check. Leave forgiveness for this to God.

Then surely you do not begrudge the American Indians and the descendants of Black slaves refusing to forgive America for the incredible barbarity, far beyond any human expectation of turning the other cheek, that was done to their ancestors?

If time cannot heal the wounds done to the Jews by the Germans, it cannot be expected to heal the wounds done to the Blacks and the Indians by the Americans.

Leave that forgiveness to God, and hold the Germans, and the white Americans, accountable for what their ancestors did, for all eternity?

Jesus said to forgive if one wished to be forgiven.

It may be too much of men to expect them to forgive what was done directly to them. But after two and three and four generations, men have to forgive and forget. Or old wounds must be reopened with each fresh generation, and each generation must continue to pay for the evils of its ancestors.

Down to the third or fourth generation - living memory - perhaps. But after that? No. After that the atrocity must be placed alongside the other atrocities of history, and viewed for what it really is: proof that men in service to their idols will commit the vilest of crimes.

But there is nothing so especially vile about Germans, relative to other races across history. They've all been as vile, in their turn. Germans committed their crimes against humanity more recently, but not so differently from Americans.

Time has to heal all wounds, lest the Italians pay reparations to the French, Greeks, and North Africans forever. And the Jews pay reparations to the Canaanites. And the English to the Hindus and Irish, and the Scots to the Irish, and the Danes to the English. Und so weiter.

That is their right. But I would remind you that with respect to blacks, the descendants of black slaves should also hold the descendants of their black ancestors in Africa that more than willingly aided and abetted the global slave trade to the same judgment. If they are consistent in their unforgiveness and/or demands of the so-called descendants of the guilty then I am fine.

Further, you seem to forget that both the American Indian and blacks in Africa practiced slavery among of their own people long before any American appeared on the scene. In fact it is almost a certainty that slavery was invented in Africa thousands of years before anyone knew what white was, much less America.

"If time cannot heal the wounds done to the Jews by the Germans, it cannot be expected to heal the wounds done to the Blacks and the Indians by the Americans."

I also remind you that the descendants of those Americans responsible have bent over backwards to make amends, especially not just descendants of black slaves but all blacks.

"But after two and three and four generations, men have to forgive and forget. Or old wounds must be reopened with each fresh generation, and each generation must continue to pay for the evils of its ancestors."

Tell that to Al sharpton and all of the racial pimps in the U.S. that have made their living off of keeping their brethren at the bottom of the heap and preach blame Whitey for everything wrong in their life.

"Time has to heal all wounds, lest the Italians pay reparations to the French, Greeks, and North Africans forever."

You seem to be of like mind with Obama and the Sharptons of this world. Why "forgive" when more reparations can be had for several more generations to come?

Jews have not allowed what happened to them in the 30s and 40s to define who they are today. They are not asking for more and more reparations with each new generation. They haven't stood still but raised themself from near extermination to obtain a place in modern world in almost all professions and commerce. The same can be said about Germany, maybe to a greater extent than the Jews and in less than 3-4 generations. This fact alone should be sufficient "forgiveness" for the evil Germans wrought on the entire world.

Lastly, I hope that you are not equating your forgiveness with forgetting.

That is not what I did and you know it.

"To have equity you must do equity"

If you forgive your kind for practicing slavery you have no legitimate basis to not forgive others for doing what you did.

Yes it is. You're diminishing the evils of America by pointing to the same evils done by other people elsewhere.

I've done no such thing. I am referring to the hypocrisy of one forgiving their ancestors of doing evil while choosing not to forgive the descendants others whose ancestors did that same evil. That is not justifying or diminishing either ancestor's action of evil. You seem to be fine with that hypocrisy in your reference to the descendants of blacks not forgiving descendants of Americans whose ancestors kept slaves or sanctioned slavery when the same unforgiving blacks give their ancestors a pass for doing the same thing. If you still do not understand this then you may have the last word on the subject because I am done on it.

The original question almost seems like satire. The Nazi party had the same idea of collective guilt regarding the Jews. The Middle East runs on the same notions, which is big part of why the region is so psychotic.
