FEMALE COLONEL AT FORT BRAGG CANNED AFTER BIZARRE ACCIDENT DURING "HOSTAGE" SCENARIO AT POPE ARMY AIRFIELD - STAFF SGT TIMOTHY WRIGHT TRAGICALLY DIES - AND SO DOES CAREER OF ELIZABETH SHAW - WAS COMMANDER OF 43RD AEROMEDICAL EVACUATION SQUADRON

When Air Force Staff Sgt. Tim Wright woke up on the morning of January 17th, he didn't know that would be his last day alive on earth.

His commanding officer, Col. Elizabeth Shaw of the 43rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, was unaware as well that by nightfall, her career in the military would be as dead as Wright's lifeless body.

The 30 year-old native of Pensacola, Florida met his tragic demise while playing the role of a "hostage" in a terrorist training exercise at Pope Army Airfield in North Carolina.

The noncom was acting his part to a tee when he slipped and fell in front of a Humvee filled with "abductors." In a split second and terrible mistake, the vehicle lurched forward and rolled over Wright.

DIED SOON AFTER BEING STRUCK

Medical teams on scene worked frantically to save him, but he died in a matter of moments.

Shaw got the blame for the horrible screw-up.

"Commanders are responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety standards," said Col. Kenneth Moss, who ordered the female colonel relieved of her duties.

His decision was based upon a ground accident investigation report and OSI probe in the death of the sergeant from the Fort Bragg-based air-evac squadron.

See how the Chain of Command works? Blame some remote person, when the DoD and right upto the President are directly responsible.

What the hell?

A guy slips and falls and gets run over by a car. That's a tragedy, not a national security incident.

It's too bad, but shit happens.

Why would somebody be relieved of command for a car accident?

Is there something more to this story?

Why would somebody be relieved of command for a car accident?

It was a training scenario/event. Safety on the rifle range, safety on vehicle movements, etc. are part of any training exercise in the military.

When someone loses their life it is common for someone above to lose their job.

Yes, when the death is something foreseeable from a known hazard of the event.

If you're doing a missile exercise and you hose off a live one at a plane, there must be an accounting - why were the safety procedures not followed?

But here, it sounds like we're speaking of vehicle traffic. Somebody falls down in front of a car and gets hit.

That's not something that's normally foreseeable. You don't dismiss people for random accidents.

There has to be something more to the story.

You call it a random accident, I call it human error.

If there was some sort of mechanical problem with the vehicle, I might agree with you.

IMO, this fatal accident was preventable...even though few details are presented in the article.

There has to be something more to the story.

"Air Force operational risk management principles and safety standards exist to prevent accidents and loss of life," Moss said in a release. "Commanders are responsible for ensuring compliance with these standards. In the 43rd Airlift Group, we have renewed our focus on managing risk during all operations through active involvement of leadership at all levels..."

"The original plan was to have the opposing force attack the unit's compound and capture a member of a security detail. But Shaw, whose name was redacted from the report, instead told planners that she would like to see some kind of capture scenario resulting in accountability of personnel.'"

Thanks for the focus on that. It makes things a little clearer. Shaw wanted a specific scenario. And that meant higher tempo and the greater possibility of accident. An accident happened and somebody died, so there is an accounting.

I assume that because she ordered the use of a new scenario she was held responsible for whatever risk analysis was (or wasn't) done.

Makes sense, to a point. (Still not convinced that one does a risk analysis of getting hit by cars/hummers. But I guess that's the way the mop flops. A kid is dead, and there's an accounting. So be it.)
