United States News Title: As America's Kids Starve On Government Lunches, Illegals Get Second Helpings And Gitmo's Finest Get Fat Politics: As children across America tweet photos of their meager school lunches, Gitmo detainees are fattening up and illegal aliens are getting second helpings. How our government sets priorities is just amazing. 'Our greatest assets are our children," President Obama said last month as he signed something called "America's Promise Summit Declaration" that pledged in part to keep children "healthy." But healthy's hardly the word that comes to mind when you read all the "#thanksObama" commentary on Twitter and other social media by disgusted kids posting photos of their government-issued victuals. In a bid to meet the rigid regulations of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, with its one-size-fits-all calorie counts, children are finding their meals the sorriest, measliest and most unappetizing ever served. It's shocking to see what now passes for meals in school cafeterias under the guise of "healthy": a couple slices of cheese, some florets of cauliflower, salads "naked" without dressing and assorted mystery meats. One kid even posted a photo of maggots in his green beans. That, not surprisingly, is why large amounts of food are going straight to the trash and school districts are dropping out of the federal lunch program at a cost of foregoing federal funding. The National School Boards Association last week reported that 84% of districts reported an increase in "plate waste" based on the new meals championed by first lady Michelle Obama. Failure of this scope — and on the sort of thing children will remember all their lives — is not only a government scandal. It also stands in stark contrast to the cosseted coddling the government offers its favorite special-interest groups. For example, some 66,000 illegal immigrants classified as "unaccompanied minors" have no 600-calorie lunches to worry about, as if they were on some crash diet. Unlike American kids, illegals are entitled to three "culturally sensitive" meals a day. According to a report this week in the Washington Times, federal contractors who care and feed for these lawbreakers — be they cherubic toddlers or tattooed cartel gang members with criminal records — are guaranteed three meals a day, along with a federally mandated right to second helpings. That's passing strange for a government that starves student athletes based on a supposed battle against obesity. In an irony of ironies, nationals of Mexico and Central America suffer from some of the world's highest obesity rates. Data are spotty, but according to the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey of 2006, 69.6% of all Mexican adults are overweight or obese. Other government data compiled by anti-obesity group Obesity HQ reports that 57.2% of Salvadoran females, 44% of Guatemalan females and 45.9% of Honduran females between the ages of 15 and 49 are overweight or obese. Such statistics — and second helpings from the government — don't suggest a lot of seriousness about obesity at all — except for those who have no political clout, like children. It's not just illegals getting extra helpings. Federal prisoners also get a full 2,900 calories of daily nourishment that NPR gushes is so good "the walls between the prison cafeteria and the outside world are coming down." And that includes Guantanamo Bay terrorists — who at 4,200 calories a day are fed so well they've grown obese on their four choices of Islamically correct meals. All this shows not only the failure of the federal government in the caring and feeding of children. It also points to grotesque political priorities. The open-borders and terrorist lobbies have managed to have their constituents coddled with extra helpings while average Americans are left to fume over government failure. We don't expect much to be done about this, so we'd suggest it's time the government got out of the food business, at least for the sake of the children.
