.650 ball at this point in time...would help.

The Rangers had a stretch close to that earlier in the season when the starting pitching was doing what it is supposed to do "quality starts", but am not too sure they have that in them again...

I looked at the various 2nd WCs since inception a few years ago. Only one team won less than 88 games. Difference this year is one team in the AL is not running away with the top WC.

I don't think the 88 wins will hold up this year there are way too many teams in the American league vying for the spot. On the other hand the National league has been all but decided.

that's why I'm counting on the Rangers to get hot . They especially need to be hot starting next Tuesday against the Jays :> Yanks wasted another great effort by Severino . But can't complain about 2 of 3 . Yanks go back to NY in 1st ;and 10 teams they SHOULD feast on except perhaps Houston. Jays go to Philly for 2 and then play 3 against the Angels and 3 against the Rangers .

Saw an article on MLB that Chirinos is not ready to come back and Corporan is still having thumb issues.

Looks like we have Wilson and Gimenez for a bit longer now.

Both are hitting well, however I wonder how much they know the rotation and pen.

Interesting article here on the Rangers keeping in the hunt:

Jeter ,Posada ,Mariano were all once prospects ....so were Hughes, Jaba ,and Montero . Guess you never know for sure . The point is that the Yanks actually have prospects after years of trading them away for 'rent a players' .The old model won't work . Can't blame Cashman for that . The Boss isn't running the show anymore and his sons have a budget .

No, all "prospects" are a roll of the dice vs the known quantity. Let's face it -- the Yankees hit the Trifecta with Jeter, Mariano, and Pettitte -- and of the three, only Jeter was a "can't-miss." Mariano was a starter in '95 and got bombed. Pettitte came out of the gate at 12-9.

I realize the old-model can't work the way it had with the Boss, but the Steinbrenner Family IS still quite wealthy, and the Yanks still are not like any other club -- we need to keep on winning. Cashman has to find the right balance of talent. That means he needed to be creative. They have lacked offensive spark and slumped a few times -- even before they went on their 90 runs in 10 games binge.

The Yanks took 2 of 3 from the Jays, but with ANY normal offensive production, could have swept. 1 run against another guy with a 5+ ERA?? They are going no where if this epic slump continues.

Raised on Long Island . I live in the Hudson Valley now . Don't kid yourself about patience. As Yanks fans we saw them go from the early 80s until the mid 90s without any championships . Now I admit ;that aint Mets ,Jets patience but.............Gene Michaels patiently built the foundation for the championship years in that time . He did it by stocking the minors with talent .

Hudson Valley -- Really nice in them thar parts. LI boy? Lotta Mets/Jets fans out there, eh? Yeah -- the drought from '82-'95 killed us Yankee Fans. Especially during the Donnie Baseball years. I understand a certain degree of patience, but when you have a 6 game lead (and obvious batting needs), ya gotta go out an make a deal. Stick Michael was a heckuva GM and eye for talent. Too bad Showalter was let go after '95. THAT loss to the Mariners was a back-breaker.

Got a great read to recommend, Tom: 'The Last Boy -- The End of America's Childhood' (Mickey Mantle.) Unc, Red, ANY baseball guy would really like this book.

pretty bad . 5th round pick Mykkele Thompson is possibly out for the year with an Achilles tear . Landon Collins had a knee injury . The Jints traded up for him in the 2nd round. He says he'll be ok. 2 more cornerbacks were dinged . One of them was subbing for Prince Amukamara who was already inactive with an injury .

Look like two are gone for the year. And two coming back eventually. ITMT they picked up somebody competent (forget now.)

I like the Rangers ,but when I was a big hockey fan I was on Long Island ,and it was in the middle of the great Islanders run .

Out on the Island still for that time? That was a confusing time for me as a Rangers Fan; I began watching the Islanders on Channel 9....was watched for their '75 underdog run as they beat the hated Flyers and began pulling for the Gilles-Trottier-Bossy Isles. Total confusion when they played the Rangers. After that dynasty I returned as a hard-core Rangers' Fan.

Maybe the Yankees need to bring back their old 'batting coach' from the mid-90s:

And now the Rangers won yet again.

Yeah, odd year of absolute parity. Is it possible 85-86 games wins...a division AND WC??

Man, from what I've seen of the entire AL, ANY of these teams are capable of getting red hot OR slumping into oblivion. The Rangers' SP is no worse than any of the contenders -- only that lack a real Stopper it appears.

Don't think the Royals will tank that bad but they have trouble beating good teams this year. The Rangers are the bizarro opposite. They lose to sub-500 teams and beat above 500 teams. Better record on the road (best AL road record) than at home.

Hard to tell if the Rangers tank. It does not take much right now. In the position of the Twins, Rays, Angels, Orioles and Rangers if any of those teams go on a 5-7 game losing streak it may be tough to bounce back in Sept.

I foresee Bannister using 7-10 pitchers in a game come Sept call ups:)

it was a great time to be on the Island .The team was very community oriented . It was easy to route for Trottier and Bossy but may favorites were the grinders like Bobby Nystrom and the Sutter Brothers . Same thing with the D . Everyone liked Potvin . But my favorite was Ken Morrow . I thought it was cool that he went from an Olympic Gold medal team right to a Stanley Cup team . Not a bad way to start a career . A Gold medal and 4 Stanley Cups .

Rangers got to Rodney in the bottom ninth tonight. Won 4-3 on a Beltre walk off walk:)

Two bunt singles (one was a sac bunt beat out by DD). They Rodney plunked Choo in the back. Fielder struck out then the walk by Beltre.

Stros lose putting Rangers 3 games out.

only that lack a real Stopper it appears.

The closer Tolleson is doing a fine job. 23 of 24 saves since being bumped up. Plus the two late inning relievers they picked up from the trade deadline are doing well. Dyson has a nasty sinking fast ball. Time will tell. Lots of baseball left to play.

Both the Jays and Yanks need to keep their eyes on the Orioles . They have not been buried and they have not had one of those hot streaks yet.

They are playing better as of late and have won 4 in a row to get them 5 games over .500.

He is on the DL after TJ surgery... We have 2 #2s one is on the DL supposedly gonna be back on Wednesday and the other is pitching like a #3 or 4, in fact he could very well have lost last night if it weren't for the defense...

Choo saved his bacon with this little gem last night that if not made would have surrendered the lead and maybe the game...

Yea they tried losing last night to a sub .500 team, AGAIN!!!

Choo's throw and Rodney's lack of pitching are the only reasons they won last night...

Looks like my bad mouthing of Adrian has finally gotten to him he's been playing better for a couple of weeks now... "EVIS" well he's still playing his way into moving to a new zipcode, hope that can be arranged this off season... Ever since he got that big contract he's been regressing in all areas of his play...

Good points. (I'd rather have a team demonstrate an ability to beat better teams while having a worse record.) The Rangers -- road warriors too? It all bodes well for them IF they can cop a WC spot.

Hard to tell if the Rangers tank. It does not take much right now. In the position of the Twins, Rays, Angels, Orioles and Rangers if any of those teams go on a 5-7 game losing streak it may be tough to bounce back in Sept.

The Rangers are a Jekyll and Hyde team. Sorta like the Yanks, sorta like many teams it seems. Running either Hot and Cold.

The only teams I'd bet the house on for making the playoffs is the Jays and KC (only because the AL Central stinks.

I foresee Bannister using 7-10 pitchers in a game come Sept call ups:)

Girardi will be using 8-11 ;-)

Must have been a great time out there back then.

I mentioned the Trottier-Bossy-Gilles line because they were the iconic line of those championship teams, but yeah, other guys were memorable -- Nystrom, Tonelli (both clutch), Bourne, Goering....the Sutters were really young but integral members of the team. That D never got much credit.

Everyone liked Potvin .

Especially Rangers fans. Oh wait ;-) GREAT player.

But my favorite was Ken Morrow . I thought it was cool that he went from an Olympic Gold medal team right to a Stanley Cup team . Not a bad way to start a career . A Gold medal and 4 Stanley Cups .

Quite a start for Morrow, eh? Gold Medal, then the Cup. A defenseman's defenseman.

he has nasal fracture. Don't know if he will be back before Sept call ups . Expect Paneda back soon. I think his whole dl stint was an innings limiting stunt frankly. But when he comes back the Yanks will almost definitely go into a full 6 man rotation .After Sept 1 I expect there will be 35 Yanks in uniform ...mostly in the bullpen . We'll be lucky if Yanks games last less than 4 hrs. with all the pitching changes.

7-2 Rangers top 9th. Was 3-2 going into the 7th. Then they had three HRs in a row. One two run HR by Moreland, then solo by Napoli and then another by Elvis.

Holland did well. Made it 6 1/3 innings. Only had one inning (6th) where he got in trouble. Defense to the rescue again with a bases loaded no outs double play, then DD guns out a runner at the plate for the third out one batter later.

However, when Houston won, they put the TB Rays down in the WC hunt. Also thank you NY Yankees for taking care of the Twins.

Nice back to back to back HR derby by the Rangers yesterday. Even "Evis" put one deep over the fence to Left-Center. Nap got in on it too with a bomb in the same direction.

Also thank you NY Yankees for taking care of the Twins.

Return the favor by whipping the Jays next week .

then DD guns out a runner at the plate for the third out one batter later.

Looks like he has been working hard on his throwing, it was average to below average when he got here.

Holland did well. Made it 6 1/3 innings. Only had one inning (6th) where he got in trouble.

I'm glad he did so well now all we need is a few others to start pitching up to their potential and they will have a good shot at the playoffs...
