I would imagine he had thrown only 85 pitches so Banny decided he could handle another inning before getting into the bullpen again. He took a chance and got burned but the batters had a chance to save him and they blew it.

On Elvis...I believe they put him on the August restricted waivers list in 2013 and 2014. I believe that is standard for GMs to attempt to see if they get nibbles.

Well you have a whole lot of things going on here all at once, guys coming back from DL, they're still in the hunt for a playoff spot, trade deadline looming on the horizon.
1st thing is it looks like they decided against the 6 man rotation, for now. Harry is back and gonna start Tuesday (instead of Wed as I predicted) so they need room for him. I think this will be a tryout for both Harry (13 million dollar contract) and Feliz to see if they can be effective, do they want to keep them or do they need to make some trades. or maybe just release them who knows. I also would say they have seen something in Martinez they want to change/improve so he'll be better later. Maybe put him on the 15 day DL to get him some rest for later on this year if they can hang tough.
Then not long after this happens you have Perez coming back and that is gonna force another decision. Actually go to a 6 man rotation or do you send Chi Chi back?? My guess is the later, he got some valuable experience up here and they will want him to work on his issues.
Then not long after that you "might" have Holland coming back and that is gonna force another decision.
All of this is also gonna be used for making any off season decisions too, especially on the starting pitching, OF and maybe even Beltre's contract. Looks like a busy month of July is looming... :)

After tonight's game I see Chi Chi heading back to AA or AAA very soon. I don't think the kid can handle a fourth butt whooping in a row. The past two starts have been UGLY. That beautiful cutter of his is not working. My guess is he is overworked or lost confidence.
I will say this. Martinez and Chi Chi lasted longer without getting bombed than Tepesch and Grimm.

It should be a good learning experience for him, shows him what he needs to work on before he gets the call again.
When he first was called up I looked at his stats and he was averaging only 5 innings per start. He will need to build his stamina up before he can survive for 200+ innings in the bigs.
They could always bring Renaudo up for a start or 2 to give him some extra time off or just to send him back to the minors to get some rest.

Right-hander Nefali Feliz, the closer for both of the Rangers' World Series appearances, was designated for assignment after throwing two scoreless innings. The move creates a spot on the roster for left-hander Matt Harrison to be activated from the disabled list Saturday. Feliz was 1-2 with six saves and a 4.58 ERA in 18 appearances this season.

I finally sat down and watched the Monday night game where Joey got his "golden sombrero". And I watched his at bats especially and the pitch he struck out looking on for his 3rd K is the same pitch he jacked for a 3 run triple in his next at bat.

I can see the strategy...I think. Martinez and Gonzalez go to AAA work on things in 5-6 innings, get some much needed rest. Rangers get to see if Harry and Renauldo contribute. They tank then the Rookies come up again until they evaluate Perez and Holland.

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers optioned pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez to Triple-A Round Rock and called up right-hander Anthony Ranaudo on Saturday.
Ranaudo will be used as a long reliever for now, and the move possibly opens up a spot in the rotation for either Nick Martinez or Martin Perez after the All-Star break.
Right now, the Rangers have Wandy Rodriguez and Colby Lewis pitching against the Angels this weekend. They also announced that Yovani Gallardo will pitch against the D-backs on Tuesday and Matt Harrison on Wednesday.
That will allow Texas to use Rodriguez, Lewis and Gallardo next weekend against the Padres leading into the All-Star break. The Rangers won't need a fifth starter until July 21, five days after the break. By then, Perez could be ready to come off the disabled list and Martinez would be eligible to be recalled from Triple-A.
Gonzalez was optioned after losing his last three starts. He allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings in an 8-2 loss to the Angels on Friday.

I figured they'd use Renaudo to spot start (they still might) but looks as if he'll be a long reliever. That makes sense cause of all of the days off coming up and you don't know how Harry is gonna do, so you may need 2 LRers instead of just one. Speaking of long relievers Bass went over 4 innings last night so will need 3 or 4 days off.
Also looks like they pushed Harry off till Wednesday now, that way if it goes badly they have 2 LRers ready and Thurs off.

They are trying to regulate how many innings Martinez is getting, he has about 100 now. He did 140 last year so they'll limit him to 165 or 175 this year. So I don't think you'll see Martinez until after they see what Perez has got, but I could be wrong... :) And I don't think we'll see Gonzalez again until September, if then.
If all of these returning pitchers do well then they are gonna have some hard decisions to make with the staff as a whole.

About the only good thing I can say about last nights game is that Freeman pitched well and Odor is still doing his job in the leadoff position. Ever since I mentioned Freeman needs a new zip code he has found his stuff and been doing a whole lot better.

It was a sweet swing. We were behind the plate towards the first base line. Tall kid, sweet swing. We all thought it was gone but he lined against the wall. The wind was blowing out towards right field too:) If he got it up in the stream he would have put in the parking lot.
Saw two relievers in Lamb and Reyes. Both did great. Reyes (LHP) came in at the top 9th score 6-4 runners on 2nd and 3rd no outs...Yikes. He gets a come backer to the mound holding the runners one out. He then strikes out the next guy. Then he gets a ground out to end the inning stranding the runners.
Have we seen Reyes before?
