But to me I would have thought you would spend that #4 pick on a potential ACE not another relief pitcher. Sounds like Daniels or the scouts need to have their butts kicked again.

By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com | @Sullivan_Ranger | June 9th, 2015

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers used their third- and fourth-round picks to take two of the most talented pitchers in the 2015 Draft on Tuesday. But they both had their seasons cut short by arm injuries, putting both Duke right-hander Michael Matuella and University of Houston right-hander Jake Lemoine in the nebulous "high-risk, high-reward" category.

• Draft Central

Matuella is recovering from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery and is also dealing with the similar back issues as Rangers pitcher Matt Harrison.

• Draft Tracker

That's why Matuella dropped to the third round. He had Tommy John surgery two months ago and will need at least a full year of recovery. He's also dealing with spondylosis, an issue involving degenerative discs in the back.

Unreal moment. Im beyond excited for the opportunity that the @Rangers have given me!! Thank you to everyone for the incredible support!!! — Michael Matuella (@mikematch30) June 9, 2015

The combination leaves much unknown about Matuella's professional future, although he was still viewed as a potential first-round pick before the elbow problem sidelined him for the rest of the season at the beginning of April.

2015 Draft: Michael Matuella, P

Michael Matuella has a four-pitch mix, starting with a mid-90s fastball, two distinct breaking balls and a changeup

Prior to the injury, Matuella was 1-1 with a 1.08 ERA in six starts. In 25 innings, he had allowed 20 hits and 11 walks while striking out 24.

Harrison, who had spinal fusion surgery a year ago, has been diagnosed with spondylolisthesis.

"His has more degenerative discs, which can cause nerve pain," Harrison said. "Mine is a case where the vertebrae breaks in half and moves around, pulling on the nerves and causing numbness."

Lemoine, who stands 6-foot-5, came into the season highly regarded after pitching well for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He was listed either second or third team on four preseason All-American lists. But he made just five starts before going down with an impingement in his right shoulder. He was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts.

Lemoine was 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance with the national team. Opponents hit .194 off him. He was 6-8 with a 2.87 ERA in 17 starts as a sophomore.

The Rangers previously drafted Lemoine in the 21st round of the 2012 Draft out of Bridge City (Texas) High School.

The Rangers used their fifth-round pick to selected outfielder Chad Smith from South Gwinnett (Ga.) High School. He is a left-handed hitter with some power. He also has pitched, but the Rangers drafted him as an outfielder.

The Draft concludes on Wednesday, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 11-40 beginning on MLB.com at noon ET.

Guess this article answers my question when I said they should have taken an ACE, they were hurt..

Thru the first 10 rounds of the draft they have chosen 6 pitchers

And the top two? One was hardly a starter in college and the other is recovering from elbow surgery. JD really rolling the dice on these guys.

Good article....

On another note: Papelbon from Philly may be their first trade piece. Given how our BP has been a weak point (at times) with the second worst ERA in the AL, wonder if JD at least makes a call. Some news reports have the Phils saying they would pick up much of the salary.

I was surprised to see Kela was the one who blew the game last night. Then again 'Evis' did no favors to Kela in the 9th.

Can't win them all but blowing a 4-2 lead going into the 8th is not what this team has been doing in May. To think for a couple of hours the Rangers were 1.5 games behind Houston:)

Nobody did the pitchers any favors last night, DD got caught stealing and got picked off. Joey had 2 throwing errors and Choo overthrew his cutoff man allowing a runner to get to 2B who eventually scored. In fact when Bannister asked Choo where he was throwing the ball he replied in other words "This isn't my first rodeo I know where to throw the ball". So the way I see it they ran and threw the game away nothing the pitchers did or Oakland did, the win just fell into their laps.

Todays game is currently 1-0 Oakland, Chi Chi has pitched 7 and given up the one run. He's at 105 pitches so I imagine he'll be relieved in the 8th, if not I'll be surprised. Kazmir is pitching for Oakland and has only given up 1 hit to "Evis".

Yeah have the 'feed' in the background working late.

Chi Chi did benefit from some nifty Defense today. But having Mitch and Gallo both out of the lineup and 'seeing' Rosales hit into a DP when Kazmir struggling to pitch strikes, is not pleasant.

Banks had a nine pitch at bat and then whiffed. 4 foul balls in a row.

Freeman came in to one batter in the 8th. Walked him. Edwards in now and got a pop out for one out. We really need some more shut down guys other than Tolly in that pen when we start playing real teams and not AAA Oakland.

LOL 7-0 now the A's killing our BP. Chi Chi keeps it at one for seven innings, pitches out of three jams...Now the BP can't get three outs before letting the A's plate 6. JD get on the horn to Philly we need another reliever if we are going to be competitive. Just think what a team like the Tigers and the 'new' Yankees will do to this BP later this month.

Looks like now they're trying to gloss over what happened between Bannister and Choo.

I like Choo. I am, however, not excited about his defense.

With Josh coming back soon, and Beltre it will be interesting how they shuffle things. OF kind of stacked. 1B-DH could get crowded too. I can't remember the last time Fielder played 1B. Yet he is on the All Star ballot at 1B. Mitch is the 'official' DH on the depth chart.

http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/texas-rangers-team-depth-chart

Had to check the depth chart as Bannister and JD were changing RPs like a NASCAR pit crew changes tires. Bass is still on the roster but did not see him all series in OAK. Thinking the next DFA is Detwiler.

Good news here:

Perez threw 33 strikes in his 45 pitches. He consistently touched 94 mph on his fastball in the first inning before working on off-speed pitches in the second. In the third he focused on two-seam fastballs and hit 92 mph.

“My changeup is there and the slider was really good,” Perez said. “Two-seam fastball, fastball in, was amazing. I think I need to work a little bit more on my curveball and that’s it.”

Perez admitted to being nervous in the first inning, but got over it quickly. He did notice a change in his pitching from a year ago.

“I just did rehab and worked out,” Perez said. “Now, I feel different. I feel strong. I have a little bit more weight and I think mentally I’m strong too.

“I’m ready to go.” It's good to be young.

Gents whatever happened to the Old Timers Days? I remember the old baseball veterans would suit up and play on an actual MLB field for a few innings. Now I think some places only have a softball event.

In the 70s it was great seeing some of the old time heros of baseball get up there and show they still had some power and speed:)

Seems the Jankees are the only ones who still do it:

Probably the day Moreland came off the DL for his elbow surgery.

It would be nice to see him back soon but who is he going to bump from the starting rotation, they all seem to be pitching well right now except for Colby.

They do need to pick up a decent relief pitcher or 2 but a lot of teams seem to be having the same problems with their bullpens too, and I doubt anybody is available except for at an outrageous price.

He hasn't pitched since the 3rd of June, don't think he's injured though. I would imagine it's because the starters have been going a lot further into the games lately and he's not been needed.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Rangers: Slugger Josh Hamilton is doing a "brisk jog" on a treadmill, but still has not swung a bat since straining his left hamstring May 31. He said the tightness in his left hamstring has subsided, but still has general soreness in both hamstrings. ... LHPs Matt Harrison (spinal fusion surgery) and Martin Perez (Tommy John surgery) are both set for starts for Triple-A Round Rock, Harrison makes his third rehab start Sunday in Memphis and Perez his second next week when the Express are back home. ... LHP Derek Holland (left shoulder strain) will get another MRI next Friday.

The latest from ESPN.

Nothing about Beltre though, had heard he was progressing slowly and that he might be out longer than anticipated. But that was over a week ago.

I see they moved "Evis" up to 5th in the order last night and he came through for a change.

Scheppers got the win but he still hasn't got his act together, allowed another run last night. Feliz started a rehab in RR last week and isn't exactly tearing it up, has a lot of 3s in his stat line. 3 appearances, 3 IP, allowed 3 runs, 3 Ks, 3 BB. If these 2 could get their acts together the BP would look a whole lot better.

From the way it's looking the team has a lot of decisions to make in the next few weeks with all these players coming back off the DL, especially with the starting pitching. But just about the time you trade one of them for a reliever something will happen and you'll wish you hadn't made the trade.

ARLINGTON -- Friday, left-handed pitcher Martin Perez said his arm felt like new. Turns out there was a reason he didn't mention his legs.

The Rangers announced Saturday morning Perez has been removed from his rehab assignment after tweaking his left groin. When Perez returns to health, he will restart his 30-day rehab, though there is no date set.

Nice explosion at the plate today. Mitch and Gallo go deep and everyone got in on the hit parade. 11-7 Rangers win. Was 11-3 going in the 9th but Bass (who you pointed out did not pitch since 3 June) got knocked around a bit. Edwards had to come in to get the last out. Guess Bass needed to get out there.

That was a nice little bomb Joey hit at 471' almost went down one of the walkways. Did you see him hit it or watch the replay? Well the reason I ask is I noticed they are starting to play him with a shift, SS on RF side of 2B.

I've noticed he is starting to take more BBs instead of being bound and determined to get the bat on the ball, he's learning "patience" that's a good thing. He's making it harder for the opposition to get him out or keep him off the bases. He's no slouch at running the bases either he's got 2 SBs so far, the kid is pretty athletic for his size. And he's your typical LH batter loves the low inside pitch so he can "golf" it out of the park. He also made a real nice bare hander on a slow roller and threw the guy out.

He's making it harder by the day for the team to send him back to RR when Adrian finally comes back. :)

It was the perfect time for him to get some work in (that big lead) it had been 10 days since he last pitched. It was also to be expected that he would get knocked around a bit because of his lack of activity. I would have been surprised if he had shut them down and finished out the game, I know that was Bannisters plan though.

Truthfully I would be very happy to see Bass hardly ever pitch cause that means the starters are going at least 6-7 innings each time out. :) Not to say Bass is a bad pitcher just don't want to see him come in in long relief.

Astros got bombed again yesterday which means Rangers are within 1.5 games of 1st place in the division. With all these DL players coming back soon it looks like they could make the playoffs this year and maybe even make some noise!!

Mitch is looking good so far in the cleanup position, maybe he is finally becoming the player they always thought he could be. I would say his place on the team is pretty safe about right now, last year I wouldn't have said that.

Yes I watched all the Rangers scoring innings live. Just finished a hot morning to early afternoon on the kiddos diamond (we won 12-4; sonny boy did great and his bud did too). Sat back to cool off and watch some Rangers baseball.

Gallo made some great athletic plays at 3B helping Colby get out of jams. That monster blast the cameras could not keep up with. It was a swing and gone. Took Buzz by surprise too:) Had to watch the slow mo replay to appreciate it. LOL a woman in her 60s tried to catch that ball with her bare hand. She got a superficial cut. They interviewed the couple. The husband yelled at her to get out of the way:) The guy interviewing them said "lesson learned...wear a glove here on the HR porch when Joey is up."

He's got the stuff of legends. Hope he stays healthy and lives clean. Bright future.

Mitch crushed the ball too. One of his signature high line drives to the BBQ joint in right field.

Mitch is quite odd. When he has to step up he does so with gusto. He knows he's the man right now. It seems when he is not pressured to produce he slacks off. All those years of injuries and being in the shadows of legends might have been the reason. Now I think he sees himself as one of the big boys.

1B getting crowed. What to do with Blanks?

Wild card thought here. What if Mitch is a major trade piece to get some pitching help. Would hate to see him go. Beltre to first and Gallo at 3B? Or is Adrian going? That guy is the clubhouse mafia boss. Who knows. It's good having this kind of "problem."

A starter is almost always going to be injured (in fact 2 of them right now) so why trade Moreland?? He's proven he can be a full time player in the bigs and Blanks hasn't, on top of that there is only 1 year difference in their age. (I would use Blanks as trade bait and bring Odor back up).

If it were me I would figure out a rotation to utilize the players is a way that allows each one to have one day off per week (especially the older ones like Hamilton, Beltre and Choo) to stay fresh and help reduce injuries, at least for now as Beltre is still productive. But that would mean that you would have to use Moreland/Gallo in both the OF and 1B to make it work. This would keep as many big bats in the everyday lineup as possible especially against RHP.

DD pulled his hammy today it looked like.

OF looked horrible today. DD, Choo, LM and Smolinski all missplayed balls resulting in 4 triples and a double. It is a wonder they kept the Twins to four runs.

Gallo went deep again, this time to center. Tolly blew the tie in the 9th. With DD probably out for a few days or going on the 2 week DL hope Rua comes back. Smolinski looked lost at bat and in the OF. How he let a ball get a ball over his head for a double in the 9th in a tie amazes me. Thought they played deep in those situations to prevent the extra base hit. Oh well I'll take 2/3. Angels lost too.

But that would mean that you would have to use Moreland/Gallo in both the OF and 1B to make it work.

Well speak of the devil...

DL hope Rua comes back.

Rua is batting just about as bad as Smolinski and that's in AAA.

Just looked at tonight lineup and Joey is in LF batting 2nd, that could get interesting both in the field and at the plate. Frias is a RHP so that should help him somewhat at the plate.

Gallardo good night. 7 shut out innings. 11th straight quality start for Rangers pitching. According to Grant a new club record. Done so with spit and duct tape.

Scheppers tried to blow another. Gives up another lead off HR then stacks two runners on with the tying run coming to the plate in Puig. He smokes two inside fastballs past Puig for a K. Schep is so inconsistent. Dangerous in fact.

I seen the replay on Quick pitch and the last one was low, Puig had a reason to be ticked off at the umpire.

Well I see the experiment with Joey worked reasonably well in the field and at the plate. He got on base during the right at bat and scored one of their runs.

Then after they got the lead they switched people around to get the best defenders on the field late in the game. Smolinski came in LF, Joey to 3B, Alberto to 2B and Odor came out. (I would have been half tempted to sit Andrus just to get the point across that he has been a defensive liability way too often this year). :o

You have to admit for the most part guys they've brought up from the minors and guys other teams have released have done the job they've been asked to do. Otherwise they would be in last place at least 20 games under .500, maybe more...

I haven't seen him pitch so don't know what his problem is, I suspect there is a hitch in his giddyup that needs fixing. Or maybe he just needs the good old fashioned fix a bottle of booze and be dropped off at the cat houses. :)

I seen the replay on Quick pitch and the last one was low, Puig had a reason to be ticked off at the umpire.

Puig struck out swinging and then broke his bat over his leg. Then stormed into the clubhouse throwing something in the dugout.

I guess you mean the low call strike 2 on Puig got him dusted up a bit with the ump. This is the MLB...those guys should know the cardinal rule of never piss off the ump. Had a kid do that twice this year and had to move him to the OF where the ump could not hear him:) 10 years old and the kid talking trash to the ump:) Apparently Gallo had only one fly ball hit to him. I did not see it as we had an evening game last night. Evan Grant said "he caught it but it wasn't pretty." Wonder how long they can sustain a guy in LF in Gallo without much time out there. I know he will do well but usually folks learn this at AAA before coming up. What about Mitch? He did some LF/RF last year and I think once this year. Put Mitch in LF and have Gallo do 1B.

Well the last time he went out on the town back in 2013 he had a 'shiner' on his left eye for about a week. He was hanging out with 'bad boy' "A. J." Pierzynski on a road game in Cleveland.

Speaking of 'professional golfer' AJ Pierzynski, saw this article on him:

And yes AJ we noticed...

It might have been his 2nd K that I'm thinking about, they showed all 3 of them. I would also imagine he got his ass chewed (thru an interpreter of course nobody speaks English nowadays) over his behavior...
