Great story. And great coaching tips too...thanks. Those were mighty hits for a softball.

I think the actual longest recorded HR in MLB is somewhere around 540 or 550', with Mantle being estimated at hitting one over 640'... :o

I seen the one Reggie Jackson hit off the transformer on the roof of Tiger Stadium, if he hadn't hit the transformer I wonder how far it would have went. IIRC Norm Cash cleared the roof on Tiger Stadium and his longest drive is estimated at somewhere around 560 or 570'...

I found this one on men's slow pitch softball... Longest HR caught on video 537' by Todd Erickson. I've heard of one being 580' but can't confirm or deny.

Looks like youtube and Google are being a pain in the ass now, they want you to subscribe but it won't let you use your own e-mail address. Says it has already been used by someone else, wants you to get a Gmail account... Ain't happening bitches.. Must be some of that new Net Equality horse hockey the FCC passed without letting anybody know what they were voting on.

Yeah sounds like the locals did not want to get schooled:)

No this was an open tournament for any AF Civil Engineering team stationed anywhere in the world, we had one or two come in from Europe to play.

We were the only ASA team there and we came in 3rd. Challenged both the 1st and 2nd place teams to a game using ASA rules for a case of beer per player or $100, whichever they preferred. The one team said they had a flight to catch {eyes rolling} and the other said they only had enough money to get home. Buncha wimps...

Got my son a dual composite bat two years ago. It's ok and was advertised as not needing a 'break in' like the single form. Last week saw a single composite on 'sale' on line and bought it to see if it is better than the other. Only draw back is now I will have to spend a Saturday morning or afternoon with sonny boy breaking it in. Which means hitting 15-200 balls with it off a tee rotating it 1/4 inch each time.

So now the kids have "hot bats" like us slow pitch guys had. But doesn't this raise another issue like the ball being faster off the bat and causing more severe injuries?

We were out practicing one day at our private practice field (only CE guys had the keys to the gate) and one of my guys got hit in the face with a batted Blue Dot. Split the cartilage in his nose right down the middle, fractured an eye socket, "Shattered" his supposedly shatterproof Ray Ban sunglasses, cut his eyebrow above one eye wide open (2" gash), cut the cheek below the other eye (1" gash), hemorrhaged both eyes, and turned 2/3rds of his face about 5 different colors.

Now you would think he was in the infield to sustain injuries that bad from a batted ball. Nope, he was shagging fly balls and was about 360-370' from home plate when he got whacked!! Luckily one of our guys was on off duty EMT and we laid him down in the back of my truck and took him to the ER. There is an off colored spot in the carpet in my truck, don't know if it's from all the blood he lost or it's rust from the bottom of one of my tool boxes.

The big barrel composite bats are "illegal". They don't allow those until HS. For TTAB and Little League the barrel cannot be more than 2-1/4.

Wow how did that guy recover from his injuries.

LOL rust probably.

Ranger game almost ready to start. Wonder if Nellie is going to bomb us.

Prince Fielder is the only one batting above Mendoza line at .400.

Just looked at the bats and they're using a BPF rating of 1.15. We used BPF 1.2, or at least that is what is still on the barrel of my last bat. Heck I still have about 20 or so Blue Dots tucked away in a container somewhere in the basement. Need to get them out and see what kind of shape they're in, bet my glove is a mess though.

1-0 Rangers middle 1st.

Martin actually drew a lead off walk with a full count.

Elvis struck out with three pitches.

Fielder shot an opposite field double driving in Martin.

LOL coming out of retirement? :)

Maybe for the Granddaughter when she gets old enough. :)

If I had known someone over at the base who played or if my old downtown rec team was still together I might have played longer. But all the guys I knew and played with were either gone or had quit playing 10 years before that. I suppose I could have gotten into a church league or went out to the recs and begged for a tryout, I just didn't. Was getting too old to work my way back up from the lower recs to get back to the level of competition I was used to.

I still go to the cages every once in awhile the last time was to take the middle daughters boyfriend out to teach him some things, hit a couple buckets of golf balls and drink a few brews. But that was about 3 years ago. For some reason the batting cage balls seemed heavier and harder to drive than I remember, old age or beer caused that I think. :)

The best part of that day was hitting a tractor parked out in the left rough about 275 yards away with a golf ball. Took about 25 tries but I finally managed to hook one out there and hit it, as you can see my driving skills are no match for my hitting skills. LOL

I settled for hitting the ball in the gap or opposite field and going extra bases instead of flying out. I was always looking at the situation and how to move runners and knock them in.

I for the most part was a line drive hitter to all fields, just depended on the wind and situation. As you well know batting 1st or 2nd your duty is to get on base for the big guys. But if we were up later in the game (and we usually were) and the conditions were right (calm or blowing out) I would wait for a little higher pitch to see how far I could drive it. And if I would hit one out then I would hear Sal in the dugout "Hey little man you think you're gonna take my place"?? That would get me and everybody in both dugouts to laughing. So one time I stopped at 2nd base and yelled back "I know I'm stealing too much of your glory so I'll stay here to let you drive me in", I heard "Shut up and get in the dugout I'll just drive myself in"... LOL...

Prince Fielder is the only one batting above Mendoza line at .400.

And he seems to be doing what I suggested last year. Hitting to the opposite field instead of pulling dribblers to the 2B for a DP or easy out, hence leaving base runners stranded. It's nice to see his average weighs more than he does. If he actually had somebody in front of him who could get on base he would have 15 RBIs by now instead of 5.

You know if more guys would learn to go with the pitch instead of trying to force the pitch they could raise their average at least 30 points maybe more. To me it's utterly amazing why some guys who have all of this talent can't figure that out. Is their ego that big, their IQ that low or the coaches that dumb? Duhhhhhhh..

Trying to be a HERO and end up being a ZERO. (rolling eyes).

I thought they cashiered him like Ross.

That conversion to starter screwed up his arm and Ross too.

I guess the question is why bring in a pitcher who was out for almost a year into a two run game in the 8th. Pitch him with a bigger lead or way behind.

I think the better hitters who do go opposite field are astute to knowing when such a pitch is coming. Others are just out there trying to figure out what's coming next and end up only hitting the ball when a pitcher makes a mistake.

Elvis lost right now. As are many of the Ranger batters. Fielder knows what his scouting report says I'm sure and he makes adjustments.

I can't even start to opine on the game I watched on Sunday.

Got back from the gym early afternoon with younger son (sonny boy) cleaned up, made a sandwich and said 'cool a Rangers game is on.' Realized Detwiler has some real issues getting batters out; Rangers can hit bad pitching pretty good; and Banister has much to learn about Tanner Sheppers.

I have to say these decisions to bring certain folks up is front office type decisions, so give Banister a pass the FIRST NIGHT he used Scheppers. He probably thought, 'hey this is a professional organization, and the FO would not give me a player who is not MLB ready to play.' So he gets the pass bringing in Scheppers in Friday's game. He gets a slap on the back for pulling the plug on Scheppers before losing the lead. He gets and ok for brining in Scheppers with a 4 run lead. But after the first or second walk, he gets a head scratch from me as if he needed more to see to get someone else on the mound.

Being generous, the Rangers win tops 70 games this year.

It is quite sad to see this team struggle so much.

Is this the curse of Nolan Ryan:)

Scheppers isn't ready to take back his spot in the 8th inning yet. He should have been left in the minors until he had shown he could get somebody out, which he hasn't done all spring.

I would have brought in Kela after Bass cause it wasn't a stressful situation and I would bet he would have done better. If he could have gotten 3 or 4 outs then you could have then brought in Tolleson for the 8th and saved Feliz for the 9th.

He should have never left in the first place, I really wonder what Daniels is thinking sometimes with the crap he pulls.

He could have gotten Cruz for $13-14 mill per year and had a power hitter in the prime of career, for $10 mill less than the one he replaced him with. I also think he could have gotten Choo for less and why didn't he trade Hamilton for a pitcher when he knew he was going to let him walk in Free Agency.

I have a sneaking suspicion Daniels isn't going to be here much longer. If I was the owner he would already have a new zipcode.

All good and valid points.

JD was a 'rain man' when he was younger. The other GMs and owners did not see him as a rising and aggressive star GM. What 'magic' or tricks he pulled to get what was needed for the 1-11 teams will never be repeated.

He did shift focus to the farm and that has been a mixed bag. The farm reports on Luke and Chi Chi G. have not been good so far this year. Both are struggling with minor league batters. Perhaps they worked them too hard in the Spring and they need to be skipped in the rotation a few times to give them a rest. Oh and Gallo is in a boot for heel surgergy. Starting to sound like Mike Olt all over again.

LOL I saw that.

That had to be JD's worst deal yet...the contract extension of Elvis. He had two young sprouts in the farm who could take EAs spot for a fraction of the cost.

At least one of the big three contracts have to be dumped. Either EA, Prince or Choo. All three are toxic contracts no one wants to take on except maybe the Yankees. Even they will ask for some cash in return. Heck we are still paying A-Rod to hit HRs or sit on his duff for the Yankees.

Let's see...Goldsmitd goes 3-5 tonight. Martinez gets slammed by the second inning. His no ER streak will have to end sooner or later.

Track record for young Rangers pitchers is to do well in the first two or three weeks of the season then get "figured out."

Mike Olt?

Seems Ramirez who went in that Soria trade is on the DL too. No wonder no one wants to deal with JD.

Nostradamus you're not. :)

That makes what 10 games in a row now for Martinez of at least 6 innings and 2 ER or less, I'd say he's a keeper.

"Evis" must have heard all the grumbling about his crappy play and contract, he got 2 hits last night.

Looks like some of the bats are waking up but not enough of them, got way too many people with sub .200 averages. My dogs could hit .200 :)

Look at the box score to see how he used the pen last night, used Kela ahead of Tolleson. Looks like Scheppers finally got someone out for a change, he pitched the 9th.

Looks like they turned Justin into a reliever and he didn't do too bad last year.

Olt still hasn't figured how to hit for average yet, he has power though.
