"Exceeded expectations" gets tossed out the door when you creep to within 3 games of a playoff spot. You now expect the troops to rally and overcome on the way to the playoffs. Otherwise it's considered a choke.

Speaking of epic chokes, the Yanks are in serious trouble of even making the playoffs; Texeira is still hurt, Ellsbury is a fragile china-doll and apparently hurt again (playing turribly anyway), A-Rod ran out of gas (and magic) and the rest of the team is slumping badly. I predict they don't make the playoffs, thanks to the lack of foresight by do-nothing GM Cashman.

Tulowitski was THE key piece for a Jays team that should be there in the WS to challenge the Cards (who magically do MORE with less somehow.)

I agree. If a team is close (and there are several in the AL) then it is a battle of wills and the DL too:)

The Cards have had the best or top three farm systems for close to 8 or more years now. They don't spend a lot of money on rentals and somehow develop in house some of the best pitching in the league. They are also not afraid to cut sling load on aging 'super stars' like Albert Puhols and Carlos Beltran.

I noticed the Yankees with their older players (they ARE getting a bit younger each year though) after the second week of August they start hitting the DL.

Don't worry, they still have great players left to finish this out...The only guy that is going to have a problem is "Bald Vinny" as he has to update his 'call out roster.':)

Their performance against the Jays is just a microcosm of the whole season. They have a lead then squander it, can't get it back so they lose then the play badly until they run into a sucky pitcher.

That was a demoralizing loss for the Rangers. Even as a Yankee Fan :-( BUT...it happens. Had they won, it might have propelled them into winning the Jays series. They've just got to dismiss it and move on (easy enough to say, I know.)

As to sucky-pitchers, the Yanks have been getting shut down by 5.00 ERA bums. So when you're going bad, it doesn't matter. We've got our #3 (A-Rod) killing us and our red-hot #4 hitter (Tex) questionable for the rest of the season.) At least you're not only intact but reinforced.

and I still praise the move. Yes I would've liked Price ,but not at as a rental. Other than that ,it is not the Yank pitching that was an issue . Where exactly were the Yanks going to add a bat ? The middle infield was the only place that made sense . Catcher is at almost career highs in HR . 1st base ? Tex was playing like an All Star before he banged his leg . 2nd yes ,they could've used an upgrade . Short Stop ? Again Troy Tulowitzki is a rental who is very fragile . 3rd ? Hedley aint the reason they are losing . DH ? ARoid at the time of the trade was playing like an All-Star/Come back player . Outfield ? Gardy was an All-star at the break ;Ellsberry ,and Beltran were not going to be moved because of their contracts . Bird has been a good addition to the bench /1st base . Severino has been pitching like an ace . The other prospects will be up in a couple of days . I wouldn't have traded either Bird or Severino ,and what I heard was that one or both of them would've had to be moved to bring in anyone.

Their bats have been pathetically quite ,and A Roid looks old.....but when Bird plays 1st ,Tex or Beltran will get the DH slot . Girardi won't play A Roid if he's not producing down the stretch . They still have 2 head to head series against the Jays ,and a big series against the Mets .

Relax ;there is still a month to play .It should be fun.

Yup. It's pretty much NO EXCUSES once you're in it by the last month of the season. You CAN control "will," but the DL :-( Common sense dictates that when your 3-4-5 big guys are 35-40 years old (A-Rod, Tex, Beltran), and your centerfielder is on the DL at least once per year (Ellsbury), you go out an get another solid bat. They do have a couple of guys they've refused to help inject much needed energy (2B Refsynder up for a week, and OF Judge.)

Don't worry, they still have great players left to finish this out...The only guy that is going to have a problem is "Bald Vinny" as he has to update his 'call out roster.':)

LOL @Bald Vinny...Aye...Ooooh...Eeeee! Naaah -- their "great players" are spent. They'll finish out the season out in a disgraceful plunge as an also-ran. Their IFs can't hit; Their 3B, Chase Headley hasn't hit a line drive in 3 weeks (HAD to have been on the Juice when he hit 31 HRs during his fluke 2011.) Nearly all his hits are seeing eye grounders and bloops (you seeing what I'm seeing, Tom?). He's making E-5s like clock work. @$12 mil per year? Waaaay overpaid.

The Cards have had the best or top three farm systems for close to 8 or more years now. They don't spend a lot of money on rentals and somehow develop in house some of the best pitching in the league. They are also not afraid to cut sling load on aging 'super stars' like Albert Puhols and Carlos Beltran.

The Cards' org is amazing, isn't it? Year after year they compete like the Yanks -- without spending a gazillion dollars. Yep, buh-bye Pujols and Beltran...WHY? Because they know they have home grown, poised talent OR make savvy trades. Plus they knew Pujols was degrading. Their pitching defies reason. Fundamentally they are solid as can be.

Ok, rent Price. Otherwise, who's their Playoff Stopper? Nobody.

Yankee starting pitching *was* a big problem *while* they were hitting. Now the BP is showing signs of burn out while the SP is competent. Where were the Bombers going to add a bat? EVERYWHERE. Yes, middle IF made sense; They've gotten NOTHING from then for the entire month of August. They have no professional hitting in their depth chart -- not to mention their starting lineup since August. Headley at 3rd can't hit or field; He IS one the reason they're losing. Totally Un-clutch. Didi can't hit LHers; Drew is brutal (.190). Ryan? Their IF can't hit. Tex was due to get hurt, one year after recouping (with hardly any rest.) A-Rod...ran out of gas. Bird, not ready for Prime Time. Severino: The ONE rook living up to expectations. I'd bring up and play Refsynder and Judge. Gardy needs rest, he's looks...fried since the AS break. Ellsbury is a shadow of his former self.

Can't complain at Catcher. Yes, Tex was playing lights out, but...you NEED depth at first for what just what happened. Tulo was key, THE piece. Yes, a bit injury prone, but SS is a rigorous position. I'd have signed him long term. You see the instant different he made in Toronto. Beltran has the range of a snail on Valium. The Yanks are in BIG trouble. Playing the two hottest teams in baseball -- the Jays AND Mets? If that's 10 games, they'll win 2.

Relax ;there is still a month to play .It should be fun.

Yup, crushed. Not even competitive. The one win they got was a fluky 1-0 game that I believe took 10 innings.

They scored 4 runs in 3 games. The Rangers smoked them, and somehow the Yanks are supposed to compete against the Mets flame-throwers and Jays 10-run per game offense??

Stick a fork in them, pending some miraculous resurgence where they magically return to June-July form while hoping the Mets/Jays suddenly and simultaneous combust. The Yanks now play the Braves -- EVERYONE's favorite punching bag. If the Yanks can't beat the Braves, they're in big trouble.

Rangers pitching shut out baseball through 6 innings. Now top 7th and Deikman in. The Jays are disciplined hitters. D man is wrapped up in a ten pitch at bat right now still going.

Edit: walked him...two on now one out. Rangers toast with Tulo coming up next.

Edit #2: Tulo up with bases jammed and one out. Yikes

LOL Edit #3: I'm such a baseball pessimist. Dyson came in and got Tulo to GDP. BUT...The Rangers have just spent their magazine on decent relievers besides the closer who blew the game on Tuesday:)

That's the key to having a successful organization if you draft properly, know when to hold them and know when to fold them... Way too many organizations trade their "yunguns" for immediate gratification which most of the time doesn't play out.

The Rangers have made 3 trades that have cleaned out their farm system and have nothing to show for 2 of them and the 3rd is yet to be determined (Hamels), the guy isn't even an ace... tsk, tsk, tsk...

4-6 Extra strength Tylenols, 3-4 Amino acids and a few beers before the game and he will be right as rain, no problemo... If I can do that and play CF with a bum hammy he can play with a boo boo on his throwing hand!! :)

That's my point. The Yanks after 2001 put band aids on their championship team for a decade . They got into the playoffs true ,and even managed to win one in the new stadium . They cashed in all their chips giving long term deals to CC and A Roid ,and making other deals that didn't pan out . They are still paying for that .But in the time since the Series win they restocked ,and have a future on the farm. They could build a foundation for multiple winning teams with them if they show patients.

Nice diving catch though by Veneble today. Saved Gallys bacon.

DD had three BBs today and two hits (or the other way around). One of the base hits turned into a little league HR driving in 3.

Tolly got in a bit of hot water again but got the save.

Nice BA. Could use that at LF right now:)

I think I would trade for a RH CFer (like Cameron Maybin or Adam Jones) and move DD to LF. I think this is the only way to solidify the defense, bring in another good RHed bat and give Josh a chance to stay healthy enough to play close to 140 games (that's if you want to keep Josh).

OTOH this would create an issue with 3 big LHed bats (Moreland, Hamilton and Fielder) trying to fill 2 slots DH and 1B, who do you trade and who do you keep??? Keep the younger cheaper Moreland and trade one of the older high dollar guys or use Moreland (since he is younger) as the bait for the RHed OFer???

Hamels walks three in one inning and walked in the only run. He looked terrible. Then he struck out two to end the inning and gave up one more hit and BB all game going a full 8 innings. Nice come back. I think he struck out a total of 10.

Choo and Gimenez go deep and DD has another great game. Beltre got two hits and Fielder belted a ball against the wall but was gunned down by Jones at second.

4-1 win. Angels and Astros lose.

Rest in peace Al Arbor . Thank you for coaching the Islander teams of the 1980s that made it to 5 consecutive Stanley Cup finals ,winning 4 consecutive Stanley Cups ,and 19 consecutive playoff series . This is a record in modern sports that may never again be duplicated .

He is second to Scotty Bowman for most wins and games coached in league history. He was also on 3 Stanley Cup winning teams as a player ;winning back to back Cups with 2 different teams ; the 1960–61 Chicago Black Hawks and the 1961–62 and 1963–64 Toronto Maple Leafs.

The box score says 10. I was kinda surprised that he lasted as long as he did after that bad inning, but the PB needed that.

The only issue I had was they should have let someone else pitch the 9th Banny is beating Tolleson to death. We could have seen what the new kid Faulkner has, they just called him up and sent Martinez back down... BTA they'll wait for a spot with no pressure to see what he is capable of, he has been lights out lately...

I didn't really know Al Arbour cause I only started watching hockey when the Stars started playing well in the 90s...

From the looks of the Stars roster they might be able to make some noise in the Western Conference this year... They looked good offensively last year but couldn't keep the "biscuit from going in the basket' on their end... They picked up another goalie in Antti Niemi, and 2 Dmen Johnny Oduya and a very promising minor league guy by the name of Stephen Johns... Hockey season is just right around the corner...

Heard about this briefly on the local news. No details until you link. Another horrible death at a sports complex. The article said this was not the first.

Worst that happened at a game I attended was someone getting first aid for getting hit on the arm with a foul ball. Personally, the worst for my family was a drunk dude in the upper decks of Shea Stadium who accidentally lost his big guzzler beer which fell to the Lodge level seats and on my mother way back in the late 70s. Papa redleghunter none to happy about that. As he should have been.

So MLB has this, the death at Rangers ballpark back in 2012 (which I believe still scars Josh Hamilton); the series of head injuries just this year at Boston and Detroit (other places too I believe).

Knowing MLB they will encourage clubs to put additional netting and extend the retaining rails for the higher decks.

The foul ball issue is preventable. If you are in a hot zone for foul balls then you should have someone who has a glove and be able to catch one. When I take the family to a game we always have a glove for each person. Even MRS redleghunter has one.

Yeah Banny used Tolly AGAIN last night. Dude had disc surgery a couple years ago. He needs a few days in a row off. Used 7 times in the last 9 games. He has 28 saves with 30 or so games left. Joe Nathan in 2012 had I believe 38 saves and that was a high mark second to Mariano Riveria.

Clear to me what they need to do. Starters have to go 7 full. If not bring in long reliever until the 8th then platoon Kela, Dyson and Deikman for 8th and 9th. I understand the two new relievers are Banny's secret weapon and he does not want a lot of exposure of them. But losing Tolly at this stage would be disastrous.

Did you watch the game last night and see what happened in the stands???

yes ,it happened when A Roid got up to pinch hit for Severino . The fans did their booing and the announcers mentioned that someone fell from the upper deck near their broadcasting booth . Alex got out of the batters box for a moment . But there was no delay in the game otherwise.

I went to a Rockland Boulders game with my daughter a couple years ago. As I recall it was a fathers day gift . She got us seats in the 1st row behind the home team dugout . The game started at sunset and our vision was hampered by it. She stretched her leg out on top of the dugout . Sure enough a whistling foul ball came our way . I guess I should be thankful because her leg interfered with a ball that had my name written all over it (that I did not see coming ) . She took it on the shin ;and it bounced into the outfield .

So I got to spend father's day in the emergency room . Luckily there was no break .....just what they call a deep bone contusion. I think she still has the indent on her leg.

Minutes after we arrived in the emergency room an ambulance pulled up and brought in a woman who had been struck by a shattered bat . I'm kinda leaning to the idea that additional protection should be provided. I don't see anyone giving up a seat behind home plate because they have to watch the game through netting . I don't see people at hockey arenas complaining because they have to watch the action behind a Plexiglas wall.

Knowing MLB they will encourage clubs to put additional netting and extend the retaining rails for the higher decks.

Yea I'm kinda surprised they haven't tried raising the railing in the 2-3 upper levels of each ballpark to some where in the neighborhood of 4.5-5' to prevent the drunks/idiots from hurting themselves. The problem with that is the first couple of rows the fans view would be obscured and they wouldn't like that. So I would say the railings will stay low for the foreseeable future...

Pullimg for the Toronto Blue Jays 'casue I want to see Tulo get a World Series ring. After that I don't GAS. The Rockies will likely stay in last place for the foreseaable future. How can a team with three current all stars and several close to be players have such a pitiful record? We stopped going the the games in protest not because of the ambiance of a sumeer's night at Coors Field.

потому что Бог хочет это тот путь

I would imagine most of those guys are going to get today off...

Callups start Tuesday don't they, that's when you'll see some of these guys get some rest. That's if who they call up is effective and can get the opposition out...

Pulling for the Toronto Blue Jays 'cause I want to see Tulo get a World Series ring.

Well the Jays sure are doing pretty good right now on a roll that should carry them into the post season. Their offense is the best this year their pitching staff is middle of the road so I think they could stand a decent shot at winning it all...
