In other words, FDA management actively blocked a needed public warning regarding the dangers of this drug, consistent with eight years of FDA failures to ensure proper post-marketing studies of Avandia regarding heart attack risk. Of particular interest is the FDA?s technical defense of its position regarding the approval of the drug in the first place. The drug was approved based on a ?biomarker? or surrogate endpoint ? meaning that approval of the drug was based on its ability to change blood sugar levels, not whether it improved the health of a diabetic. Avandia works by throwing a gene switch known as PPAR that is involved with multiple chemistry reactions at the cellular level, a fundamentally unpredictable and powerful drug target. By focusing on the biomarker called blood sugar the FDA was able to ignore the key safety question which was, ?At what expense to health is blood sugar being lowered?? Even the NRA and National Association of Shooting Ranges talk about this hazard on their Web sites. Many Sheboygan residents may not be aware that there is an operating indoor shooting range in the basement of Urban Middle School. The Rec. Department offers gun safety classes and open target practice at the range. The bad news is that, since 1994, the range has not been properly cleaned or tested for lead levels. This means that lead has accumulated for 13 years in the range; therefore it is possible that range users have been exposed to dangerous levels of lead." Why hasn't the place been tested? (Could it be that none of the testers want to go near a shooting range with bad news?) After 13 years, it's very likely that this is a serious threat to the health of everyone in the area. And considering that this shooting range is in a middle school, that means these children are being threatened. Fortunately, there's a solution. Unfortunately, it's not the people responsible who are set to pay for it. The good news is that the school district has been made aware of the lead hazard. Since January, the SASD has conducted initial testing and will follow up with additional testing and thorough cleaning by a Madison company specializing in lead abatement. The district has also promised to develop strict procedures for cleaning and safe use by range participants. We think the costs of all cleanup, testing and monitoring should be borne by range users, NOT the school district budget. No educational programs should suffer for the sake of a recreational offering by SASD. Once again, the rest of society is stuck cleaning up the messes made by the gun guys. But it?s not illegal, for some reason, to own the gun that fires them. In fact, that gun is available at the gun store just outside the city of Chicago right now. "Chicago Police are concerned about a powerful new weapon used in a recent shooting on the city's South Side. The gun is known as the FN-5.7. For the first time, police found evidence that such a gun had been used in a criminal act in Chicago. The foreign-made pistol was approved for sale in the United States three years ago. Police say Tuesday?s shooting at 39th and King Drive was a gang-related drive-by, not unusual in many Chicago neighborhoods. Occupants of one car fired several shots into another, seriously injuring two men, before both vehicles crashed. Patrolmen arrested one suspect and believe two others remain at large. It was the search of the crime that turned up troubling evidence: a shell casing from an FN Herstal 5.7 pistol. It is a 20-round, Belgian-made semi-automatic that is capable of firing armor-piercing bullets that can penetrate a policeman?s protective vest. Wednesday morning, the Chicago department?s rangemaster said the rounds used in Tuesday?s shooting were not the armor-piercing variety, which by law cannot be sold to civilians." So this firearm is showing up on Chicago?s streets. Now right now, handguns of all kinds, including this one, are illegal in Chicago?s city limits. This gun should not have been there, and it was right for police to arrest these shooters (we hope they're able to find and do the same to the other two men). But seeing this gun within Chicago's borders begs the question: where did it come from? If it's not supposed to be here, how did it get here? No wonder this firearm is being brought into the city to terrorize police officers. This is why strong, statewide gun laws aren't just helpful? they?re necessary. This gun has no business being in civilian hands anywhere near the city of Chicago, and yet it's on sale to almost anyone only miles outside of it. "An outraged Mayor Richard M. Daley on Wednesday unleashed a tirade about gun control, prompted by the 500 shootings of Chicago children so far this year. Two more Chicago teens were killed this week. ?It?s an outrage,? Daley said. ?Now remember, the national debate of politicians is all about Iraq, not about guns; not about violence in America. You?re always overseas. Why don't we just get back and say, ?Well, why don't we just make this a better country, a safer country of 30,000 people?? Can you see 30,000 people getting killed in Iraq? And they want to impeach George Bush because of Iraq? How about looking at all your politicians who are not supporting common sense gun laws?"? Daley is absolutely right. Politicians just aren't focused on what's happening on America's streets. They're always willing to talk about foreign violence, and they're more than willing to talk about foreign terrorist threats, but they continue to ignore the biggest threat at home: 250 million firearms. Thousands of Americans are dying every single year? hundreds every single week? and our politicians are doing nothing. It?s not that they don't have the support. As we told you the other day, a whopping 87% of Americans agree that gun violence is a problem that needs to be dealt with. The NRA puffs out its cheeks and tries to seem bigger than it really is, but in the big picture, its members are an extremist minority in the United States. There is no reason we should have passed concealed weapons laws in 48 states, and no reason that assault weapons shouldn't be banned for good from within our shores. The NRA?s bullying has taken us to a point where hundreds of children are shot in one of the biggest cities in the country, and the year is only half over. It's time for us to do something about it? it's time for us to hold these politicians responsible for their inaction, and make them support common sense gun laws.
