NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – One down. How many to go?

Brewers superstar Ryan Braun was the first victim of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis of America clinic, as the league suspended him on Friday for the remainder of the season without pay.

Now the focus has shifted to Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

The evidence against the 14-time All-Star is ”far beyond” what the league had against Braun, according to ESPN.com. However, the Yankees don’t expect Rodriguez to be suspended immediately, sources told the website.

ESPN.com is also reporting that, according to sources, Rodriguez could very likely face a suspension similar to Braun’s.

An MLB source told CBS Evening News’ Jim Axelrod, however, that the five-time American League home-run champion could be looking at a lifetime ban.

So will the three-time American League MVP cut a deal with the league?

“My understanding is he’s trying to make a deal,” a source told the website. “But I don’t think it’s going to happen (Monday).”

A-Rod has admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs while with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03. The injured 37-year-old, who has denied using them since, told WFAN radio last week that he hasn’t instructed anyone to make a deal with the league “at this point” regarding a Biogenesis-related suspension.

But following Braun’s decision to cooperate with MLB investigators, A-Rod could end up changing his mind and taking the same route.

CBSSports.com/WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman reported on Monday, prior to the announcement of Braun’s punishmen, that Rodriguez’s suspension is expected to be announced within the next two to three weeks.

“I don’t know what happened with Alex,” Yankees closer Mariano Rivera said on Monday. “He’s my teammate, and I have to support him 100 percent. We need to see where this goes. The good thing about this is we’re cleaning the game. That’s the way it should be. I think this is a message for whoever tries to do this again, that it’s going to be caught. It’s going to be caught.

“I mean, I have to support him. He’s my teammate. He’s my brother. Definitely, I (can’t) say if he did or didn’t do it. If it happens, I can’t throw him in the street, you know? He’s still my brother.”

The 20-year veteran batted .272 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs for the Yankees in 2012. He hasn’t played at all this season.

I gave up on pro baseball after that strike in '93(?). Like many sports involving millions of dollar, cheating is part of the game.

I think I have 7 Reggie Jackson Topps rookie cards from my teenage days. They were worth something when he made the Hall of Fame, but then the baseball card business became crooked too. I suppose they're worth a few bucks to someone.

I only started following again after the Tigers started doing good. Still don't just sit down and watch all nine inning of a game. Usually have it on the radio and if it is a tight game, might watch the last innings.

Never swear "allegiance" to anything other than the 'right to change your mind'!

A friend and I were chatting today about Emile Griffith [boxer] dying at age 75.

He sent me this link. Don't click on it unless you've got 15 minutes to spare. His grandpa attended it in Toledo in 1919. As college students we went to Jack Dempsey's Restaurant in NYC. He paid to have his picture taken with Jack. I was too cheap to do likewise.

It was 94 and yeah still a young man I too was turned off for a long while. Just started getting back into ML baseball fanship when my boys were old enough to swing a bat. So did not get back into it really until the 2001 WS.

Tigers are an awesome team. I am a Texas Rangers fan since the early 2000s before they started getting good. Was a Mets fan as a kid, but with most of my military service when not deployed in Texas, my boys converted me:)

I get more charged out of watching those Little League World Series games on the rare occasions that I do. Someone knows how to make billions off those youngsters.

I was close on the MLB strike year. One strike against my memory.

Did you get to see Matt Garza's debut with Texas last night?? He looked pretty good only giving up one run (unearned).

Also beginning to look like Berkman is done for the year and may be retiring.

Grew up in a neighborhood where we played sandlot baseball all summer long just about every day all day long until dark. Whole neighborhood of kids too. When evening came we all went down to the street lights at the bottom of the hill and played stick ball until our parents called us to come home. Then some of us would get together at one of the homes and watch MLB games of our local teams (Mets/Yankees). Great memories. Did not play "organized" baseball until little league age, but we still played sandlot ball during the little league season. That is probably why so many of us were really good at that level since we played all the time. Had a retired NYC cop teach us now then some batting and pitching tips. How many kids today know how to throw a fork ball or curve and change up at age 7:)

Kept that love of baseball alive with my sons in their early years. Since kids don't stay out all day in the summer playing sandlot baseball I get my boys out a lot in the front yard and involve them in organized youth league baseball. My youngest started youth league baseball at 4 years old and he has the baseball "bug" real bad. I have also coached both my son's team as a batting coach/base coach for my older son, and head coach for my younger son. Doing that has kept me young:)

Actually only saw the game from the 7th on. But did see the highlights. Awesome outing and he is a keeper. Hope he stays healthy and if he does I hope Daniels signs him to a long term contract. Having Yu, Harrison, Garza, Holland and Perez for years to come is something we need in Texas baseball. Now we need to get a RH bat OF and this team will get much better.

Yeah we may have to trade for Morales of the the Mariners if Berkman is out for the season. JD knew Berk was a crap shoot. Berk is a good man and won't hurt this team by pretending he can come back if he really can't. Unlike A-Rod with the Yankees.

We may have a hole at RF power bat since I think Cruz is going to strike a deal with MLB and will miss the remainder of the regular season.

Good stories. I played a lot of baseball as a kid including little league ball. Those were fun times in my life. Now I'm just a grouchy old man. We have a team called the Louisville Bats. I'm not sure what level of semi-pro ball they are. I think I might take in a game one of these days. Thanks for stirring up my interest in the game again.

Great news. Yeah, don't let professional baseball kill your childhood love of baseball. I am sure those semi-pro players are all there because they love the game and it will show. They are not there for the money:) Go to the game, get a hot dog some lemonade and enjoy it!

I'm hearing that they want to get Giancarlo Stanton from the Marlins but that would require trading Profar and a couple of decent prospects...

Yeah we may have to trade for Morales of the the Mariners if Berkman is out for the season.

So what do you plan on doing with Moreland if you acquire Morales to play first?

They are also looking at Adam Dunn 1B and Alex Rios OF both of the White Sox.

Don't think we will get Morales but if we do he would replace Berkman as DH. Keep Moreland at 1B---great defender and once he comes out of this slump his bat will be key.

Hey man, I'm heading to watch the Louisville Bats tomorrow, so thanks for providing me a bit of motivation. Free parking, $7 cheap seats, my brother's birthday and $1 beer (Thirsty Thursday). I'm not even sure who they'll be playing against - I think Scranton/Wilkes-Barr.

I think the last ball game I attended was when Camden Yards in Baltimore was brand new circa 1990. So it has been a while and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game.

Looks like they decided that there wasn't any hitters out there worth trading for, or if there was the cost was too high. But they did make a really nice pickup in Garza, now all they need to do is get him to sign a contract to keep him around for a few years.

Enjoy the game Fred. AA games are awesome. A bunch of kids trying real hard to make the big leagues. Usually high scoring games or one side has a pitching prospect that pitches a shut out. Great thing about going to minor league games is that you can watch a kid develop and when he hits the big leauge you can point and say "I remember that kid when he was at AA." I have my son get autographs from the AAA team. I told him, you never know if the player is going to be the next big star and you will have his autograph before many people.

I think JD (GM John Daniels) was smart. We were not going to "sell the farm" literally for a mediocre bat. The Twitter sphere was a buzz yesterday with JD trying to make a big deal for a young long term contract big bat in Gioncarlo Stanton of the Marlins. Either the price was too high (understandable given the kid is only 25 and has years to play) or Miami wondered if they could get people to come to games if they dealt him. If the Rangers can keep pitching the way they are now and getting the key hits like the past few nights, I think we will be ok.

I still think JD is going to work the long-term contract big bat before the non waiver deadline at the end of August. If not, our chances are better on the off season Free Agent Market.

Hey, seems like you are a big baseball fan. There is a great sports forum at:

Sign up is free like here and there is a VERY active Texas Rangers folder there that gets over 2000 posts each series. There are also other subject folders like trades and such. Let me know if you sign up and I will let you know my handle over there.

Here is some insider info on how JD tried to get a big bat before the trade deadline. This is from a poster at sportshoopla.com with some inside connections:

Here's one last bit of deadline info I got: Last night at around 6 we were heavily involved with the blue jays to get bautista. Rangers would've traded Profar, Alfaro, Luke Jackson, and one lesser prospect (assuming this is Ryan Rua). The trade was actually close. Then for some reason the Blue Jays backed out and told JD that they just couldn't do it and tried to trade us encarnacion for the same players instead. We didn't want to do that, so the trade fell through. We asked them at least 2 more times today to reconsider, but they didn't. We also talked to the Rockies and one other team about a 3 team trade with us getting Cargo and losing Profar, E. Beltre, plus more prospects. This trade wasn't very close though, it was just a discussion. Then at around noon today we had preliminary talks to Miami about Stanton. Miami said this morning they were "willing to listen" on him. We talked to them about sending Profar, Perez, and some others. I don't have much more on this other than Miami wanted one major league ready outfielder in return. So it didn't work out. It was at this point where JD stopped going after the really big bats. In the last 20 minutes he made a late push at Hunter Pence and Michael Morse. Obviously these didn't work out either. He had an extremely busy day. The man tried his best, but it was just one of those years. We'll be big players this offseason I'm sure.

Hope this interests some. I know it was after the fact, but I guess its a testament at the type of day our GM has had

They've been kicking the tires on Stanton for sometime now and nothings come of it because of what the Marlins are rumored to want. Profar, Perez and a couple of other prospects which in my opinion is too high a price. Trading Profar is one thing Perez is another, he has more worth to the Rangers because good starting pitching is hard to get.

I don't even follow my local team the Reds but for some reason I like following the Rangers, guess it's because I lived there for 11 years and hope to eventually go back...

Enjoy the game Fred. AA games are awesome.

I did enjoy the game and am glad I went and may go again in the future. The Bats lost 5-0 to the Syracuse Chiefs. It was AAA ball and there is some sort of voting going on for the best AAA venue and Slugger Field is in the top three last I heard.

Breaking news right now Re: A-Rod and others...another black eye for MLB, IMO.
