The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is taking a rare step of allowing public comments prior to issuing a decision on a study that could result in outlawing certain types of shotguns currently available to citizens.

The ATF completed a study regarding the importability of certain shotguns. The basis for a possible ban is based on a loosely defined “Sporting Purpose” test. Using the vague definition almost all pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns could be banned as they are all capable of accepting a magazine, box or tube capable of holding more than 5 rounds. Other characteristics determined to be “military” by the ATF can also be used as a basis for a ban.

Ironically, many shotguns with “military” features are currently being used in shooting competitions held by the USPSA, IDPA and IPSC. The rules could also result in obscure regulations where an individual would be unsure if he is violating them or not.

Dudley Brown, Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said if the ATF succeeds with the banning of tactical shotguns it “will be the most dangerous interpretation of the 1968 Gun Control Act ever envisioned and will outlaw thousands of perfectly legitimate home defense shotguns.”

The ATF is currently allowing public comments on the study until the end of the month. Those wishing to express concerns about the study can send an email to shotgunstudy@atf.gov

The ATF Wants Your Shotgun

Colorado -–(Ammoland.com)- Did you know the ATF is trying to re-define the law?

And they’ve got their anti-gun sights set on your SHOTGUN.

In January, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives released a document announcing a study that would dramatically tighten regulations on shotguns.

With the tacit approval of the Obama Administration, the ATF hopes to use bureaucratic rule changes to ban the importation and sale of certain shotguns based on their twisted view of the “sporting purposes” clause in the 1968 Gun Control Act.

There’s one major problem. As you know, the purpose of the Second Amendment isn’t to protect “sports.”

It’s to protect citizens – like you and me – from a tyrannical government.

This proposal by the ATF is an all-out flank attack on our right to keep and bear arms.

The ATF’s ridiculously anti-gun study suggests that certain, and in many cases very random, criteria would make a shotgun unable to be imported.

Those random criteria include:

  • Folding, telescoping or collapsible stocks;
  • Bayonet lugs;
  • Flash suppressors;
  • Magazines over 5 rounds, or a drum magazine;
  • Integrated rail systems;
  • Light enhancing devices;
  • Excessive weight (greater than 10 pounds for a 12 gauge);
  • Excessive bulk;
  • Forward pistol grip.

You read that right. Excessive weight and bulk will get your shotgun banned. You and I both know, none of the items listed make a firearm more or less dangerous.

It is a list of completely arbitrary items that have more to do with appearance than anything substantial.

The ATF might as well say they don’t want anything “black” to be imported – it would be just as logical. But their blatant disregard for the truth doesn’t stop there.

The United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) might be interested to know that the ATF doesn’t consider their matches a “sport”

But the ATF has made a mistake, and I need you to capitalize on it.

They have opened up a comment period – open until April 30 – by which the general public can voice their opinions on this “study.”

That means gun owners like you and I, simply MUST make our voices heard by the anti-gun bureaucrats in Washington.

They think that they quietly slip these regulations through without taxpayers and voters making a fuss.

Gun owners must let them know we’re watching their every move.

That’s why I need you to contact the ATF and tell them to keep their hands off your shotgun and to ditch their ridiculous, anti-gun study.

You can send them a message by emailing here shotgunstudy@atf.gov

Over the next few days, I intend to urge National Association for Gun Rights’ members like you to flood the ATF with emails stating exactly how ridiculous their proposal is.

This ban is not about public safety.

It is nothing less than the Obama administrations latest attempt to use bureaucratic wrangling to trample over your Second Amendment rights.

It is another example of a power grab by an already out of control government agency.

Apparently it wasn’t enough for them to funnel firearms into Mexico.

Now they want to keep you from having a home defense shotgun.

I need you to contact the ATF TODAY and tell them to keep their hands off your shotgun and to ditch their ridiculous, anti-gun study.

For Liberty,

Dudley Brown
Executive Director

Shooting tyrants and nanny-state progressives could become a popular sport, if necessary. You want sporting purposes, you got it!

I have a Franchi SPA-12 (as pictured above) ...

Type: selective pump-action or gas-operated Gauge: 12 Chamber: 2 3/4" (70 mm) Length: 1041 mm Barrel length: 546 mm. Weight 4.4 kg Capacity: 8 rounds in underbarrel tube magazine

The SPAS-12 was designed in the late 1970s by the Italian company Luigi FranchiSpa as a special purpose, military and police close combat weapon (actually,SPAS stands for Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun, or Special Purpose AutomaticShotgun, depending on the source). It featured a selective action for greater versatility, and can be used as a gas operated semi-automatic repeater or as amanually operated pump action repeater, depending on the mission and ammunition used. Since its introduction SPAS-12 became a very popular police and specialforces weapon, being versatile, reliable and with good firepower. On the other hand, it is heavier than most other similar shotguns and quite complicated,which results in relatively high prices.

SPAS-12 utilizes somewhat traditional for shotguns gas system with annular gaspiston locating around the underbarrel magazine tube. It operates the bolt withvertically tilting locking lug that engages the barrel extension to lock.SPAS-12 can be switched between gas operated self-loading mode and manuallyoperated pump mode by pressing and holding a button at the bottom of the forearm and pulling the forearm slightly forward for AUTOMATIC mode or backward for PUMP(or MANUAL) mode. Earlier models of the SPAS-12 had the lever type safety at the front of the triggerguard, but due to some deficiencies this was latter replacedby the push-button (cross-bolt) safety at the same place.

SPAS-12 could be fitted with stamped metallic buttstock that folds to the top ofthe receiver when not in use, and with a pistol grip made of plastic.Alternatively, solid plastic buttstocks with pistol grips are available. Barrelhas cylinder bore with screw-on muzzle devices (cokes of flash hiders). Sightsusually are of rifle type, with post front and open notch rear sight.

Do ya think the idiots think I am going to give it up when they come to my door to take it?

BTW ... it is a semi-auto and uses MAGNUM load nicely. :)
