Chrysler Group today announced a 20-percent year-over-year sales gain for April 2012, and many of the company’s models reported record monthly sales volume. Chrysler Group reported total sales of 141,165 vehicles in April, compared to 117,225 a year prior. Chrysler – 31,879 sales, up 56 percent April represented the Chrysler brand’s tenth consecutive month of sales gains, and was the brand’s best April sales month since 2007. The biggest winner was the Chrysler 300 sedan, which saw sales leap 138 percent year-over-year to 7763 cars. The 200 sedan and convertible enjoyed a solid 61-percent sales increase to 13,343 units, and the Town & Country minivan reported 10,773 sales, up 22 percent from last April. Although Jeep saw a more modest sales gain, it did represent the brand’s 24th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. Leading the pack by volume was the Wrangler, with sales up 35 percent compared to April 2011, at 12,184. It was closely followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which reported a 21-percent sales gain to 11,834 units. Liberty sales rose 19 percent to 5789 units, and Patriot sales climbed 13 percent to 5261 units, but the Jeep Compass saw its sales slide down 11 percent to just 3616 copies. Dodge – 45,248 sales, up 2 percent Dodge reported the smallest sales growth of all the Chrysler Group brands, with only four of its models seeing sales increase. Even so, the two-percent gain was Dodge’s 11th month of year-over-year sales increases. Leading the upward charge was the Avenger sedan, with sales climbing 47 percent over April 2011 to 11,147 cars. It was followed by the Journey crossover, up 29 percent to 5933 sales; the Caravan minivan, up 27 percent to 11,183 sales; and the Challenger muscle car, which saw sales rise 13 percent to 4102 examples.Every other model in the Dodge lineup saw its sales slip: the now-dead Caliber fell 65 percent year-over-year to 1408 cars, the Durango fell 36 percent to just 3257 sales, and the Charger dropped six percent to 7991 cars. The Ram Truck division saw its sales climb 12 percent, buoyed as always by healthy sales of the Ram pickup truck family. Those trucks saw sales rise 19 percent compared to April 2012, to 21,126 vehicles. The Dodge Caravan-based Ram Cargo Van reported sales of a meager 340 units. There were just 39 sales of the Dakota compact pickup, down 98 percent from a year ago, because the model went out of production last year. Fiat – 3849 sales, up 336 percent Don’t be followed by the giant percentage gain: sales of the Fiat 500 in April 2011 totaled just 340 cars. Still, with 3849 sales last month, the Fiat 500 set a new monthly sales record. The brand says this sales surge may have been encouraged by the fact that the new high-performance 500 Abarth model went on sale last month.
