Title: Obama Administration Pulls Rule On Child Farm Labor

(Reuters) - An Obama administration proposal to restrict child labor on farms has been withdrawn after criticism from agricultural groups.

The rules, which were supported by child labor advocates, would have banned children younger than 16 from using most power-driven farm equipment, including tractors, if they had not taken a training course.

The proposal also would have prevented those younger than 18 from working in feed lots, grain bins and stockyards.

The Labor Department said it had received thousands of comments about the rule and its effect on small family-owned farms.

"As a result, the Department of Labor is announcing today the withdrawal of the proposed rule dealing with children under the age of 16 who work in agricultural vocations," it said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday.

The departments of Labor and Agriculture will work with such organizations as the American Farm Bureau Federation and the 4-H farm youth group to develop programs to reduce accidents for young workers, it said.

Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, welcomed the move, calling it "the right decision for our nation's family-based agriculture system."

But Reid Maki, coordinator for the Child Labor Coalition, said the rules had been aimed at protecting children drawing wages and did not apply to children working on their parents' farms.

Farm work is the most dangerous sector for young workers and pulling the proposed rule could mean another 50 to 100 deaths over the next decade, he said.

"We think they (the rules) were really well designed and would have saved some lives," he said.

They would have shit their pants had they seen me at 12, take a shotgun and a tractor (or a horse) up the logging road, alone, at 5:00 AM to get breakfast. Completely different world today.

Hmmm... by that logic, can we therefore conclude that nobody should eat, because people sometimes choke on food?

Seems to me there are certain things that we must and need to do, like eating, but we as a society have decided that children are not as mature as adults and therefore are more prone to errors in judgement and thus make more mistakes. I, like lucysmom, believe this a good example of something that is an unnecessary risk and think it would be appropriate to restrict children from doing potentially dangerous tasks that might result in harm.

Oh, if only you had the power to save us all from our own ignorance, the world would be a much safer place.

Why can't a parent decide what is an acceptable risk for his own child?

Why would you want government to decide for them?

CZ, it would appear that loonyming actually prefers people to not know how to work, so they can be dependant on the government for the rest of their lives....

Again. Eric, you are way off the mark.

In other words, the miniscule risk of injuries outweighs having a productive society.

Working on a farm isn't the only way to be productive. You've gotta watch that black or white thinking stuff.

Hmmm... by that logic, can we therefore conclude that nobody should eat, because people sometimes choke on food?

By that logic, can we conclude that we should outlaw all internal combustion engines, to make everyone walk wherever they go (after all, 50,000 people die in car accidents each year! Gasp!)

Eric, you are not being logical, you're being hyperbolic.

Soo the only way children can learn to work and be independent is to work on a farm? That's rather limiting, don't you think.

It's too bad the pulled the rules. Child labor laws have done a great deal of good since their inception in the 19th Century, and it's typical of the Obama Administration to not have the will to follow through on such an important measure.

Hey Mike -

There were no "rules" pulled. The issue was a proposal for "training" on power equipment. Nobody has a child perform actual "work" WITH power tolls unless otherwise trained in the professional areas ... it violates already existing insurance and common sense standards for safety and performance.

The issues for PULLING someone's stupid idea were about microscopic government required certification/training records to PROVE that some kid can operate a weed-eater with safety glasses while REQUIRING a PILOT'S LICENSE. The costs were prohibitive when considering the already existing safety records ESTABLISHED.

Your comment is poor to say the least.

Where did anyone say that children can learn to work and be independent only on a farm? No where did anyone say that.

This is a trait that you and mininggold share, interestingly enough. You both ask asinine hypothetical questions when you have no other reasonable response. Asking asinine hypothetical questions is not an acceptable substitute for intelligent debate. It's one reason why so many believe you are both the same person as well as why so many believe you both are idiots.

Isn't there a limit on human resources AND costs which require certification of training from bona-fide instructors that must be reviewed?

The article suggests 50-100 lives saved over a ten year period with this proposal. Isn't that perspective akin to, "searching for a needle in a haystack"?

And people who make up statistical data based on their own perceptions of reality are always wrong.

You discredit yourself well. You are trying to piss me off with a very hyena style manner to show what a childish, pouting baby you are.

You don't control my emotions, I do. What do you thing I'll do? lower myself to your level and respond in kind?

You have grown increasingly extreme and fascist in your rhetoric. You claim to follow a religion that says the son of God visited Earth and preached tolerance, kindness, compassion and then let himself be tortured to redeem humanity.

Yet you are full of hate, anger, call for the genocidal destruction of people whom you hate, and is fond of saying tolerance is irrelevant. You always wear your desire for revenge on the world for not having exactly our belief system on your sleeve, and lack the insight on how this looks to others.

Is this to create a climate on your forum that creates the controversy that make tabloid journalism popular thinking it will increase the size and scope of this place you have managed to run into the ground and generally discredit it in most people who ever came here's eyes?

I do know that as a medical professional, my son would be more concerned for you, your strange mental state and how it effects people around you. But he wouldn't take this personally. In some ways he's even a better man then I am.

You could learn a lot from him. He's a Christian by the way, so is my daughter in law and grand kids. They go to church every Sunday and are North Carolinians, not Oregonians.

Here you are attacking me because you wonder how someone else is going to vote in November.

You also never listen to my opinions on the election, my opposition to abortion, and feel you are the one to tell me how I think and what I believe. You claim to know this better then I do.

I feel pity for you, I truly do. I hope you get help; because doing things like you are doing it is not going to serve you well at all.

Get help; you need it.

Ping to 41. So your dad knew someone who knew someone... and that qualifies you to meddle in the affairs of other families?

I LIVED it, city boy, and I lived through it. I know very well a tractor can flip over. It's the first thing you learn, 'straight up or straight down the hill'. In the real world, and not in the imaginary world that city folk live in, a kid would have already known that for years.

What about the 12 gauge shotgun I was carrying as I drove up the hill and up the logging road? Some might say that is much more dangerous than the tractor, and yet I lived through it all, doing it many, many times.

I'd grab that shotgun without even asking and the only thing my grandpa would say was, "don't waste any shells". That's because I'd already been shooting that and other guns for years!

You really need to rethink your incessant need to meddle in the affairs of other families and their children, who obviously don't want or need your superior guidance in the first place.

You have to age it, at least 30 days.

In the winter you can do that at home. Just wrap it with plastic and hang it in the barn for 30 days or so. Wait until it starts turning brown. Then it's delicious and melts in your mouth. With deer anyway, never shot a duck.

Sports & gambling was my hobby...;}

Really! You'll have to expand on that some time.

You really need to rethink your incessant need to meddle in the affairs of other families and their children, who obviously don't want or need your superior guidance in the first place.

You ask a libTURD to do the impossible, (for a libTURD).

Most of these libTURDS are deeply MISERABLE people who will brag how great their live are and how well they are doing in public. But inside they are MISERABLE, SAD, ANGRY people.

They blame EVERYTHING wrong on EVERYBODY ELSE.

So if anything is wrong in their lives it HAS to be somebody else's fault.

It must be YOUR fault, (it can't be the libTURD'S fault, libTURDS are PERFECT remember?).

So YOU must be punished for being so dumb.

Not to mention that most libTURDS are allergic to actual ACTION. They'll be happy to tell you how to do any job, (remember they're PERFECT?), but they sure don't want to actually get DIRTY or sweat. that's what YOU are for boy.

libTURDS are insane.

libTURDISM is a terminal mental DISEASE.

Spoiled, stupid and ignorant, brain dead phuckwads, libTURD fools, tools, and idiots, are the real sickness; the messiah "king" obammy and his regime are only the symptoms.

The goal was to protect children who are four times more likely to be killed while performing farm work than those in all other industries combined.

Complete bullshit. Kids who work on a farm FAR outnumber kids who "work in all other industries," especially for kids <~16 years of age.

Basically, you're throwing meaningless "statistics" out there, hoping nobody will notice you're talking shit.

I support this and hope common sense prevails after the end of this election year.

Since we've already established that you're talking shit, your "support" is not only meaningless, but demonstrates that common sense HAS prevailed.

Punk.
