Churches across North Carolina are having "Marriage Sunday" tomorrow. Pastors are encouraged to preach traditional marriage from the pulpit, and then encourage their church members to go vote early in favor of Amendment One in North Carolina that would define marriage as between one man and one woman and outlaw things such as civil unions. Instead of preaching love and peace, pastors will be preaching hate and bigotry tomorrow. I feel especially sorry for the gay youth that will be in attendance tomorrow. The "Vote For Marriage NC" campaign has pulled out the fear factor and warned that marriage will be "redefined" if this amendment does not pass. According to them, attorneys, marriage counselors, and doctors will lose their licenses due to their own bigotry.
From their website (emphasis mine):
Those people a strong majority of North Carolinians who believe marriage is between one man and one woman, would be the legal equivalent of bigots for acting on their heartfelt beliefs. Refusal to accommodate and recognize same-sex marriages would be the equivalent of racial discrimination. Not only will the law penalize traditional marriage supporters, but the power of government will work in concert to promote this belief throughout the culture.
Oh no! People are going to be called bigots for being bigoted! My heart bleeds for these poor clueless fools. You know, speaking of bigotry, wasn't racism a "heartfelt belief" too? I guess as long as it's a heartfelt belief then it isn't bigotry. What wonderful logic. Luckily, there are also many churches in North Carolina that are for marriage equality. They believe in marriage for all, not just marriage for a few. Here is a list of religious leaders and churches that are standing united against this bigotry.
Here is a list of very proud bigots. There are many more that aren't listed.
Now is the time for YOU to get involved. You can donate to Protect All NC Families. They need all the resources they can get so they can adequately fight back against this bigotry. As churches across North Carolina line up tomorrow and teach hate from the pulpit, people in many congregations will be rallying in love for marriage equality. Who's side are you on?
