Ruger GunsAfter our story on the Rise of the Prepper, we have been inundated with emails from readers telling us how hard it’s becoming for them to obtain certain types of ammo. We also had a reader send us a press release this morning from Ruger.

Effective Immediately Ruger has stopped accepting Firearms Orders. The Company says that they have had to temporarily suspend the acceptance of new orders after receiving requests for more than one million units.

Here is the Official Statement form Ruger:

SOUTHPORT, CT –Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE-RGR), announced today that for the first quarter 2012, the Company has received orders for more than one million units. Therefore, the Company has temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders.

Chief Executive Officer Michael O. Fifer made the following comments:

  • The Company’s Retailer Programs that were offered from January 1, 2012 through February 29, 2012 were very successful and generated significant orders from retailers to independent wholesale distributors for Ruger firearms.
  • Year-to-date, the independent wholesale distributors placed orders with the Company for more than one million Ruger firearms.
  • Despite the Company’s continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity to rapidly fulfill these orders. Consequently, the Company has temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders.
  • The Company expects to resume the normal acceptance of orders by the end of May 2012.

In the Rise of the Prepper article, we warned that with Guns, Gold and Emergency Food all setting record sales numbers we will likely see major shortages hit the marketplace. As people begin to stock up on preparedness related items in response to the coming election cycle, we will likely see nationwide shortages similar to what happened during the elections in 2008. I fear this is only the beginning.

Seems unlikely to me. I think they have hit a profitability price point, commanding premium prices.

The goal for a premium brand like Ruger or Glock is to be considered a top brand and keep supply just a little short of what the market wants.

As with Apple, you can wring more profit out of your market segment by winning the mindshare game against competing brands and keeping prices (and profits) high. People often mistakenly believe that the goal of manufacturers is to produce so many widgets that they drive the cost down and drive competitors out of the market. But that isn't how it works. Apple doesn't want to be #1 in desktop machines or even in laptops. They just want to be the premium brand for the upper class and the young tech leaders. They don't really want to be Dell or HP, selling commodity parts at commodity prices. They make a lot more by cornering the high-end market.

There's always been waiting lists for Rugers, at least in my neck of the woods. Glocks not so much.

I have never forgiven Ruger for supporting (and even pushing) Poppy Bush's alleged Assault Weapons Ban,his proposal to restrict semi-auto handguns to military and police only, and when that failed, his ban on magazines that hold over 10 rounds.

Ruger did all this because they didn't make so-called Assault Weapons, and at that time weren't making auto-loaders. They saw this as a sound strategy to build the company bottom line, and to hell with the 2nd Amendment or what was best for citizens.

I haven't bought any of their products since then, and will never buy another one.

I only recall S&W supporting the Xlinton AWB. I don't recall any boycotts from the CCW or general gun community. Certainly nothing compared to the fury with S&W selling us out during the Xlinton years.

S&W was the real traitor to the gun community.

Ruger does produce a decent gun at a reasonable price so the amount of business they are receiving doesn't surprise me.

I've never had a lick of problems with any Ruger I've ever owned or shot, except for the 22/45 Mark III I bought about 1-1/2 years ago..... It seemed like it took forever to get it sighted in properly... I must have put close to 300 rounds through it before it wanted to shoot a decent grouping... Guess it just needed to be broken in some before it decided to settle down....

As far as ammo goes the gun shops don't around here don't seem to have any problems keeping a good supply on hand... Wal Mart is kinda short on Self Defense but has plenty of target.. Now some of the online dealers I visit seem to be short on the more popular rounds in certain grains... One online site I looked at for some .223 had over 40 different listings but only 3 or 4 of the were in stock....

Yeah,to lefties like you a open market (or a cheap shot) is more important than the Bill of Rights.

Especially the 2nd one.

That's because it was Clinton,not a Bush.

Bush was bad on gun rights but Xlinton was a disaster. I don't see how you honestly compare the two.

Your memory is pretty selective. Thanks to Poppy Bush and his executive orders we got the so-called AWB,magazien bans, military rifle imports (including historic US Military rifles given to other countries) bans, and probably a few other things I am forgetting.

Poppy was the very first president to use executive orders to violate the 2nd Amendment, and his idiot son even admitted he would sign into law any gun control congress approved.

And Clinton got......,to keep Poppy's AWB.
