Title: Google to buy Motorola's Mobile Handset Business

I'm sitting at HTC in Taipei, contemplating Google's announced intention to purchase Motorola's handset business.

I think it's probably a mistake.

Apple is the only company that makes iPhones, RIM is the only company that makes Blackberrys and HP is only company that makes Palm WebOS phones.

Android has been phenomenally successful -- selling 48% of the smartphones worldwide last quarter to Apple's 19% -- because Google doesn't complete in the handset market with the vendors who are using Android.

Google claims that the purchase could make the Android eco-system stronger. However, if Google starts making their own handsets, HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Erickson, and other companies that are currently betting big on Android might think twice about being so reliant on Google. The winner could be Microsoft, who would be the only mobile platform vendor left that doesn't make their own handsets.

Nokia (which is still the #1 Smartphone vendor in Europe) has already decided to downplay their proprietary platform (Symbian) and focus on Windows Phone. They are going to use Windows Phone to reenter the U.S. Smartphone market as well.

I can easily see some of the other vendors put more emphasis on Windows Phone if Google goes through with this.

We'll see.

Google needed Motorola's patents. That's why.

With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction.

As Godwinson says, most of the analysis I've read is that Google made this move to protect themselves from patent trolling by Apple.

I assume you read GigaOm, he's had great insight into this deal.

Yep, that's what is being reported. While this may help defend Android a bit, Motorola's patents aren't likely going to protect them much.

Apple is in the process of suing Motorola for patent infringement.

Microsoft currently makes more money off of Google Android handset manufacturers (about $6 a unit) than Google does for royalties for using Microsoft mobile patents.

The other thing that no one mentions is that Google has a version of Android for Televisions called Google TV. Motorola has about 10% of the global set top box market and Google may want to start making set top boxes.
