SAN ANGELO, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas jury on Tuesday sentenced polygamist leader Warren Jeffs to life in prison plus 20 years for sexually assaulting two girls he claimed as "spiritual" brides. The 55-year-old leader of a Mormon breakaway sect was convicted there last week of sexual assault on a child and aggravated sexual assault on a child in connection with "marriages" to a 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl.
Jeffs is the self-proclaimed "prophet" of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints, which has a ranch in west Texas and believes polygamy is the path to Heaven.
