Poster Comment: I beg to differ thangdatrang! The WORLD watched, but could not, or would not, do anything to save her! No matter what evidence the Terri Schindler's family has presented, Michael Schiavo, Judge Greer and noted euthanasia lawyer George Felos determined that Terri must die for her own good. This despite numerous reports by nurses and others that she was a vital and responsive young woman of forty-one who smiled at and recognized her family; regardless of the fact that her feeding tube was only inserted at mealtimes and she needed no other life support; even though she was a Catholic whose religion forbids euthanasia. Terri Schindler was EUTHANIZED and DIED on EASTER Thursday, and this nation went about it's busness as usual when it was done and over with! I agree some made a good show of trying to stop this FORCED EUTHANASIA but the MAJORITY lost to the handful that wanted her DEAD!! I believe that unless the FEAR OF GOD is forced upon those who could do such a thing to our people, they will ACCEPT EUTHANASIA, they may not like, but they will program themselves to become indifferent to it, until it's one of their own! JMHO!

"Euthanasia", or "Mercy Killing" is defined as "an action or an omission which of itself or by intention causes death, in order that all suffering may in this way be eliminated. Our country is on a collision course with euthanasia. You know, if we were talking about a car, or a typewriter, or some other THING, we could say that when enough things go wrong with it, it becomes more trouble than it's worth. Repairs would be too costly, too involved. Throw it out and get a new one. But we cannot apply this mindset to HUMAN PERSONS. A person is never more trouble than he/she is worth. It is precisely when life is afflicted by weakness and illness that it is all the MORE deserving of our care. Remember the song, "He Ain't Heavy; He's My Brother". Advocates of euthanasia do not see the ill this way, but only as a burden. God forgive them.

murder is the govts business. it is societys business. The standard should be if you can give a person who cannot respond food and water they should be given it. If it is a machine that keeps their heart beating or some other vital organ functioning then it should be able to come off if that is the persons will.

It's never an easy decision for the family to make, but one thing is true and that is it's not ANY OF YOUR OR THE GOVERNMENT'S BUSINESS! Whether you chose to believe or not, whether you even understand or not, the sick who linger, they linger for a reason, and it has nothing to do with those who wish to stop their suffering. That is 100% bullshit. I'd like to see you tell that to a person wracked in pain, dying from cancer. Should morphine be withheld from them so they can die the way your god wants them to? How about someone who's in a coma after having their third stroke? Should they be kept alive at any cost because your god has decided they haven't suffered enough? People sign health directives laying out whether they want extraordinary measures taken to keep them alive. That's their decision, not yours or the governments or your mythical gods.

If the labor is done by family members or friends, home care is really not that expensive.

Home care is the familie's call, unless it conflicts with the wishes of the patient. If they turn to government assistance, it's a different matter. The problem is that once you start, how do you stop? Are you willing to sacrifice the lives of the family members to 24/7 care of the person in a coma?

She had ample opportunity to recover. At the end she was a breathing husk. I suppose by force feeding she could have been kept in that state indefinitely, but why? That's cruel. Why not let her go and be with your mystical magic being in the sky?

Murron, There was a time (not long ago) when a way-too-preemie baby died shortly after birth and both doctors and the family would say, "it's for the best" or "it's God's will" knowing the agony that child would suffer if death hadn't intervened. But, today, that SAME preemie may be "saved" by machinery--but that baby often is not saved from unbearable pain that approaches torture. Did God's will change? Or, did we change because we've focused on saving life at all cost (mechanical advances) instead of quality of life? Like it or not, someone on this earth has to be responsible for making decisions, including medical decisions, for others. This is easier if the ill person is an adult who has made his or her wishes known (and best if this is put in writing). Still, parents have to be responsible for children (unless they're nuts or fanatics) and spouses have to make tough decisions for their significant others, again, unless they're nuts, fanatics, or caused the ill person's dilemma. The bottom line is that the more we advance mechanically, the more we have to prepare ourselves to make decisions in a complex landscape or get our paperwork house in order to avoid this issue.

I don't know. He was working on it though and seemed to have a host of political protectors mainly Pubbies running interference. Lots of stuff just didn't add up with Terri. I seem to recall that he turned down a $1 million offer to cede his guardianship of her. That seems strange to me if all he was after was money. What I do know is that her autopsy showed her brain weighed half of that of a normal woman of her age and that the ME said she would have been incapable of swallowing food on her own. I realize that most people hate him, but I wonder what they would have done in his place, especially after her parents turned the whole thing into a freak show by bringing in Randall Terry and Jesse Jackson.
