Flacco says this year’s Ravens team is his best Posted: July 18th, 2010 | Adam Rank | Tags: Baltimore Ravens, Joe Flacco

Ravens QB Joe Flacco told the Baltimore Sun on Saturday that this year’s team is the best on which he has ever played. And that should mean something, too, considering he’s a veteran of two NFL seasons.

“We’ve got the talent to go as far as we want to,” Flacco said. “It’s about playing up to our capabilities. I think we’ve done that for the most part.”

But in fairness to Flacco, he does have three playoff wins under his belt, including a trip to the AFC Championship Game. And what else is he going to say, that this year’s team is brutal? (Although it would be cool if somebody like Sam Bradford came out and said his college team was better than his current NFL team, which might be the case.)

But hyperbole or not, Flacco does have a point. The Ravens have surrounded him with enough weapons with Anquan Boldin and Donte’ Stallworth that this team could be looking at a Super Bowl or bust.

“We’ve definitely been disappointed the last couple of years,” Flacco said. “We know that feeling. If that happens again, we’re going to be disappointed. I think the fans feel the same way and rightfully so.

“We want to get to the Super Bowl. We understand that we have a team to do so. We’re going to do it one of these times. We just want it as soon as possible. We think it could be this year.”

Flacco made those comments while signing autographs at a telecommunications store in Severn, Md. Hopefully, there were no adults waiting in line — as the team’s new autograph policy at training camp prohibits grown-ups from gathering signatures at training camp, according to the Carroll County Times.

Some of the adults quoted by the Times compare the policy to the Baltimore Colts leaving town, which seems a bit extreme. But come guys, think about the children. The children. Hopefully those mentioned in the story were able to get out to see Flacco on Saturday.

I believe the Ravens are the most improved team in the NFL coming into the season. I think Flacco is the 'real deal'.

I think by the end of the season, however, injuries to the older players on defense will undermine the astute moves made on offense.

AFC North will be a dogfight between the Ravens and my Bengals. Steelers could be spoilers late in the season.

Thanks, I missed this totally, NOBODY reads the Sunpapers. Subscriptions fell below 250K last I checked. Think smaller paper, fewer pages, layoffs, cut and now share a Wash Bureau with the Post.

The whole team was juiced about their prospects at the June mini-camps. Not unusual, but more enthusiastic than the teams in the middle tier of the league thinking SB.

I'm hoping the defense can hold together, they brought in a bunch of mid-career veterans, and Ray has 14 years under his belt. Chuck Bednarik is one of the few that lasted that long and he went both ways.

Been wanting to contact you since late last week. I got an email and downloaded the 451 page Ravens Media Guide. Easy read, skim it, or just wait for the Bengals, probably similar.

Steelers didn't make one available, Eagles are read online only, Bengals have a link for their 2010 version and it comes up with 404 error, not available yet.

Tough search on the Bengals site, you need to use download bengals media guide or it comes up zero.

Here's the link that will work when it's ready:

http://www.bengals.com/team/media-guide10.html

I gleaned a few gems from the Ravens guide:

1. Art Modell has moved to Cockeysville, MD. He's only a partial owner now but owned a bank here back in the '80s, sold out to MD Nat Corp and had to bail them out financially. They were very close to bankruptcy in '89 I think. Don't know when he moved here, but he lives near where a lot of the ballplayers and the really big old money in this area live.

2. Rookies, QB's report in one week, rest of the team straggles in during the week.

3. John Harbaugh was a coach at the U of Cincy from 89-96.

Ravens guide was short, only went back to '96.

(chuckle) Bengals website leaves much to be desired to say the least. I get most of my stuff on them via the Cincinnati Enquirer website. This was via NFL.com btw.

Without Reed your defense has performed below expectations from what I've seen twice per year as you know. Kinda like that Safety with the Colts, Sanders. On the bright side, Ray Ray and company have two gigantic DT's in front of them for the first time since whatshisname retired to do bad sideline commentary (laughing). The Goose.

We're fired up here. Team is healthy, Defense is Top Five and should make a run at #1 overall Defense this year. Benson and his backups all healthy and ready to go. O line is the best its been since 2005. Wide receiver corps is back up to strength, and deep.

Now its all about Palmer. If he had been 'right' last year, we'd have gone 14- 2. As it was, with the running game and defense we went 11-5.

If Palmer is going to get to a Super Bowl, this is the year. The Bengals can make the playoffs with a journeyman quarterback as they showed last year with Palmer's sub par (for him) performance.

If he's 'right'...we got a shot at hosting the AFC Championship game at Paul Brown Stadium.

We'll see.

I forgot about Reed and I posted about him lately. He might miss the entire season.

What worries me is the officiating. It really came back and hit the fan after that umpire in Detroit ruined a perfect game on a call that wasn't even close.

I had too damn many umpires who couldn't call a consistent strike when I played school ball it was pathetic, too many "ministers" and part timers. Little League stuff was more fair when we had our fathers, not clowns making the call.

Last year against NE the Ravens got called for five penalties going down the stretch. Terrell Suggs tackled Brady on one of them and they could have been dancing. He got called for helmet contact. Meanwhile the Pats got away with killing Flacco and no penalties. I think sometimes the fix is in.

Notice after the big network contract the NBA just happen to have a seven game series with the Celtics and Lakers. Get both coasts, avoid flyover country and none of this four and out. I don't do BB, God it's boring.

I heard it over the weekend, hence my referencing it.
