Netanyahu coming to Congress in March
Post Date: 2015-01-22 12:30:07 by Gatlin

Washington (CNN)Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pushed back his meeting with Congress to March, House Speaker John Boehner announced Thursday on his verified Twitter account. Boehner's tweet stated that the scheduling change was meant to accommodate Netanyahu's request to attend the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference in Washington, D.C. The new date -- March 3 -- is also two weeks before the Israeli election. The meeting with Congress was originally scheduled for Feb. 11. Netanyahu has raised alarm bells about nuclear talks between the Obama administration and Iran. In the U.S., the Iran talks are a topic that has pitted President Barack Obama against ...

Senate Says Climate Change Is Real

With overwhelming bipartisan support, the Senate Wednesday passed an amendment saying that climate change is not a hoax. But when the question of whether it’s caused by man came up, that bipartisan support slipped away. The votes were on a string of amendments to the bill approving the Keystone XL pipeline that has been under heavy debate since the Senate returned earlier this month. Senate Democrats introduced several amendments asserting that climate change is real in an effort to get Republicans on record on that issue. The first amendment, sponsored by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said simply that climate change is real and not a hoax. In a surprising turn of events, the vote ...

Romney, Bush to meet amid presidential bid chatter

Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney plan to meet in Utah as early as Thursday, as both men consider launching a Republican presidential run. Aides to both former governors confirmed the private meeting to Fox News on Thursday. The sitdown apparently had been planned before Romney took the surprise step two weeks ago of telling donors he was considering a 2016 bid. A senior Bush adviser described it as a "long-scheduled meeting." "Gov. Bush is looking forward to catching up with Gov. Romney," the adviser told Fox News. Whether the meeting, first reported by The New York Times, will be a symbolic gesture -- or a chance for the heavyweight Republican figures to try and avoid a bitter ...

A Christian’s response to insult

In 1983 the pornographic magazine Hustler published a parody ad attacking Jerry Falwell. The ad featured a fake interview in which the evangelical minister described having an incestuous encounter with his mother in an outhouse. Falwell sued Hustler’s publisher, Larry Flynt, for libel, invasion of privacy, and emotional distress. Falwell said that while he could tolerate insults against himself, he couldn’t abide attacks on his family. Falwell won most of the lower court rulings. But he lost at the Supreme Court, which ruled that the satirical ad was legal under the First Amendment. The justices wrote that the ad was “doubtless gross and repugnant,” but that since ...

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FORCED TO CLOSE AS INSPECTORS BRAND CHILDREN ‘BIGOTS’ FOR NOT KNOWING WHAT A MUSLIM IS
Post Date: 2015-01-22 11:49:59 by Gatlin

Inspectors have labelled pupils at a Christian school bigots and forced it to close after a young boy gave the wrong answer when asked what a Muslim was. Teachers at the school say he referenced terrorism in his answer, but argued that one child’s throwaway answer was no ground for closing the whole school. Durham Free School, which currently educates 94 pupils aged between 11 and 13, was praised by former education secretary Michael Gove when it opened in September 2013, the Daily Mail has reported. But inspectors visiting the school last November, after the new guidelines encouraging inspectors to rate schools on how they promote ‘British values’, deemed the school to have ...

The GOP's wrong-headed obsession with the 'Christian candidate'

Pondering the increasing likelihood of Mitt Romney 2016, Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight recently produced a five-circle Venn diagram of prospective GOP candidates for 2016, aptly titled, "The Republicans' Five-Ring Circus." There was a telling inclusion: "Christian Conservative" was one of the five rings. Silver places Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and, to a lesser degree, Mike Pence, Rick Perry, and Bobby Jindal in this Christian Conservative category. I might add Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, at least on the margins, but Silver's labeling scheme is basically right. Religion matters for Democrats, too. But the awarding of the "Christian candidate" ...

Controversial group stakes out "Christian areas" in London

LONDON -- On a Friday night in East London, activists with a group called "Britain First" took to the streets for what they call a Christian patrol. Our cameras went along with them as they entered a "predominantly Muslim occupied area," according to one of the group's members. It wasn't long before there was a confrontation. "What are you filming me for?" shouted a passerby. "This ain't your area pal, it's a Christian area, always has been," shouted back Paul Golding, the 32-year-old leader of Britain First. A former truck driver, Golding has been convicted for harassment. While it's difficult to know how many supporters he ...

Mitch McConnell's wife resigns over coal issues

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's wife has resigned from Bloomberg Philanthropies' board of directors after the charity announced plans to expand its efforts to shutter coal-fired power plants. Elaine Chao joined the board one year after it announced a $50 million, four-year commitment to the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal initiative. Alison Lundergan Grimes made Chao's membership on the board an issue during her failed bid to unseat McConnell last year. At the time, McConnell defended his wife's position on the board and said she would not resign. But a McConnell spokesman said Wednesday Chao decided to resign after learning the charity ...

• Say it ain’t so: Will America be subjected to four—or eight—years of Jeb or Hillary?By Victor Thorn —The very real possibility of a Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton face-off in the 2016 presidential election has elicited a collective groan across many parts of America. One political activist voicing his disapproval is Nelson Hultberg, director of Americans for a Free Republic and president of the Dallas-based National Independent Party.During a January 7 interview, Hultberg told this reporter: “Jeb Bush running against Hillary Clinton would be a total disaster because it epitomizes what people are against, specifically a Democrat-Republican monopoly. The Common Sense Show – by Dave Hodges In times of crises, the government has proven, time and time again, that it cannot be counted on to adequately protect the American people. As the American people have not prepared for the coming dark days, they will be vulnerable to starvation, dehydration, cholera, pandemics and attacks from resource-deficient  looters. Will the government be there to save them? History has already answered this question in the negative. Events such as Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, L.A. riots and the Ferguson riots have repeatedly demonstrated that when trouble comes, the American people will be on their own.   When disaster ...

The Wrists of Birds Reveal Evolution Undoing Itself

Contrary to earlier claims, a new study shows that evolution may be reversible Are you sitting down? Good, because you may be shocked to learn that evolution can retrace its steps. A recent study of the wrists of modern birds finds that a bone lost from dinosaurs for tens of millions of years reappeared when dinosaurs evolved into birds and took flight. In the four-legged ancestors of dinosaurs, wrists were robust, weight-bearing joints with as many as 11 bones. When two-legged dinosaurs evolved some 230 million years ago, though, the wrists, no longer supporting such weight, became comparatively dainty. The forelimbs of the meat-eating raptors took on the task of manipulating prey, ...

SEOUL, South Korea — While North Korea draws world attention with spectacular and seemingly bizarre actions like the hacking of Sony’s computers or outbursts of bellicose rhetoric, Pyongyang has quietly initiated a round of reforms aimed at liberalizing the economy. ~~~SNIP~~~ The “May 30 Measures,” as they’ve come to be known, envision the significant reduction of state control of the economy and a dismantling of central planning. Managers of state enterprises will be allowed to purchase items on a free market, making deals with other enterprises or even private businesses. They will be given the right to fire and hire workers, and pay them as much as they want. ...

Bozeman bottling company helps get water to Glendive

BOZEMAN, Mont. - Water samples in Glendive detected cancer-causing benzene in the drinking water. The spill happened just nine miles upriver from Glendive. Now officials in North Dakota are sampling drinking water in Williston and possibly other places to see if contaminates spread across the state line. The pipeline breach is about 50 miles away from the North Dakota border. A Bozeman bottling company has helped the families in Glendive by providing them with drinking water. Workers have recovered only 10,000 gallons of oil from the 50,000 that spilled into Yellowstone River, near Glendive, but the oil has already contaminated the drinking water supply. "They can't drink the ...

While the Western world was watching and grieving over the slaughter in Paris last week, and my colleagues in the media were fomenting a meaningless debate about whether President Obama should have gone to Paris to participate in a televised parade, the feds took advantage of that diversion to reveal even more incursions into our liberties than we had known about. We already knew that the NSA, our 60,000 domestic spies, has captured and retained the contents of nearly all emails, text messages, telephone calls, bank statements, utility bills and credit card bills of all Americans since 2009. We already knew that Obama has used CIA drones to kill Americans overseas and claims that he somehow ...

Legendary A-10 'Warthog' sends ISIS fleeing even as it faces Pentagon cuts

With a roaring engine, 30-mm. cannon and nose painted like a toothsome, snarling beast, the A-10 Thunderbolt sends ISIS fighters scattering like cockroaches on the Iraqi desert plains, but the legendary fighter plane pilots call the "Warthog" may be fighting for its own life. The venerable plane, first built for destroying Soviet tanks, has been on the chopping block since the sequester of 2011 mandated steep cuts in the Pentagon budget. Although the planes haven't been built in more than 30 years, the Defense Department believes it can save maintenance costs by phasing them out. Air Force brass believes newer, faster aircraft like the F-16, F-15E, and, eventually, Lockheed ...

A Palestinian man stabbed 11 people on a Tel Aviv bus during the morning rush hour Wednesday before he was shot by corrections officers and taken into custody, officials said.  Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld posted a message on Twitter saying that authorities believe the incident is a terror attack. Eleven people were stabbed and three remain in critical condition, according to Lee Gat, a spokeswoman at Tel Hashomer hospital, and a statement from the Ichilov hospital. Rosenfeld said the suspect is a 23-year-old man from Tulkarem, located in the West Bank northeast of Tel Aviv. He said the man was being questioned by police and a heightened security presence was in effect in ...

Friendly fire: Dems challenge Obama agenda

President Obama, for all the flak he took from Republicans over his combative State of the Union address, now is running into turbulence from members of his own party – who could prove an even bigger barrier to his agenda. Democrats from across the political spectrum spent Wednesday taking aim at parts of the president’s platform. Though in the minority, they hold sway because Democratic defectors – particularly in the Senate – could make the difference in helping Republicans pass key legislation, and even override a presidential veto. Already, a top-ranking Senate Democrat has renewed pressure on Obama to slow his diplomatic outreach to Cuba and to Iran. House and ...

Paris' lawsuit against Fox News an empty threat

Experts on both sides of the Atlantic say that Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo's threat to take Fox News to court is largely empty. Hidalgo hasn't outlined her legal arguments or said whether she'll go to court in the U.S. or in France, but experts on media law said it is unlikely that a court in either country would agree to hear the case. "I think we'll have to sue," Hidalgo told CNN on Tuesday, saying the U.S.- based network had "insulted" the reputation of her city. The network has been ridiculed for making factually-challenged claims about "no-go zones" that are off-limits to non-Muslims. Fox News has since apologized but said the threat of a ...

Federal charges unlikely for Darren Wilson in Ferguson case, officials say

(CNN)A federal investigation has not found enough evidence to charge Darren Wilson with the federal crime of depriving Michael Brown of his civil rights, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation. The FBI has completed its investigation into the August shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, and sent the findings to the Justice Department, a law enforcement official and a separate U.S. official said Wednesday. Justice Department prosecutors will not recommend civil rights charges against Wilson, who killed Brown, because there is not sufficient evidence to support charges, a U.S. official told CNN. The New York Times first reported the development Wednesday. A grand jury decided ...

New GOP Border Security Bill Removes Border Fences

The new border bills drafted by Republican leaders require the actual removal of at least 66 miles of weak border fencing between laborers in Mexico and employers in the United States. The border bills also only require for the construction of 27 miles of effective double-layer fencing along the 2,000-mile border. “It is a remarkable that the direction of our progress is going backwards, from a goal of building 700 miles of double-layer border fencing [in 2006] to only 27 miles [in 2015],” said a Hill staffer who opposes the leaders’ bills. “Where the double-layer fence has been put in, it has worked spectacularly. The public is with us 80, 90 percent on this ...

Private high-speed rail has eminent domain powers in Texas

Texas Central Railway's privately funded bullet train will need to buy private land as it makes its way from Dallas to Houston. For landowners in the path of the tracks, the first-of-its-kind project will have eminent domain powers as a last resort. The $10 billion project would use Japanese N700 Shinkansen trains capable of going more than 200 mph. More than 60 trains a day could be making the 90-minute trip between Dallas to Houston by 2021. The majority of the route will follow existing utility lines or freight tracks. But the tracks will also cross private land. Click on the photos above to see the routes being considered as part of the federal environmental feasibility study. ...
