Is America's Social Contract Broken?

Is America's Social Contract Broken?   (July 17, 2013) As Voltaire observed, "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." This is precisely how empires collapse. Correspondent Kenneth D. recently made the case that the Social Contract in America is broken. Kenneth offered two links for context: Social Contract (Wikipedia) and OECD calls time on trickle down theory. Here is Kenneth's commentary: Society has been structured for a few centuries now such that we are expected to voluntarily give up some of our wealth to governing bodies, and in return they will “ honestly and prudently” govern for the betterment and cohesiveness of society, so ...

Bombs Going Off One Level Down

It’s been a strange couple of weeks. US stocks are not far from all-time records, both nominally and adjusted for inflation. Home prices are soaring – up 33% y-o-y in the Bay Area, to take just one of many possible examples. A casual observer might assume that things are going great. But one level down on the headline ladder it’s a very different story. The list of ominous events and trends has suddenly grown a lot longer. Among the bombs that went off last week: Detroit declares bankruptcy For years, analysts have been looking at the balance sheets and pension funds of dysfunctional entities like California, Illinois, Chicago, Detroit, and Oakland and wondering how much ...

Avalanche of City Debt Downgrades and Eventual Bankruptcies Coming Up; Numerous Cities Bankrupt Over Pension Promises

Yesterday Moody's downgrades Chicago's credit rating, pension debt to blame. Chicago's credit score is on the way down. The city is getting a small down grade from Aa3 to A3, because of the city's pension problem. Moody's Investors Service says it's making the move because of "formidable legal and political barriers to pension reform" in the state. The downgrade affects $8.2 billion in debt and means it will cost the city more to borrow money. According to Moody's Chicago has $19 billion in unfunded pension liability and faces a "tremendous strain" in meeting their budget and paying law enforcement.Avalanche of City Downgrades Coming Up With ...

Homeland Security's Future Home: A Former Mental Hospital

Chris Mills frequently gives tours of St. Elizabeths Hospital, a former mental institution where the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is building a $4.5 billion headquarters. It’s the largest construction project in the District of Columbia since the Pentagon was completed in 1943. So there’s a lot of ground to cover. Mills prefers to chauffeur his guests around the place in a golf cart. A cheerful 55-year-old with a neatly trimmed mustache, Mills, who is managing the project for DHS, tells visitors to look out for animals. There are loads. Herds of deer, a flock of wild turkeys, and a bald eagle reside in the fenced-in facility. They might not last long outside. St. ...

Long Island native Harvey Davis, a top National Security Agency official, needs that commanding presence. His role is to supervise infrastructure construction worldwide for NSA, which is part of the Defense Department. That involves tending to logistics, military installations, as well as power, space and cooling for all NSA data centers. In May, crews broke ground on a $792 million computing center at the agency’s headquarters near Baltimore that will complement the ...

Holder takes on Texas over voting laws after court ruling

Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday the Justice Department will ask a San Antonio-based federal court to force Texas to get permission from the federal government before it can make any additional changes to its voting and election laws. The challenge to Texas' authority comes after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a portion of the Voting Rights Act. The high court’s 5-4 decision invalidated a rule that singled out certain states, like Texas and North Carolina, and forced them to get Justice Department approval before changing their election rules. The Voting Rights Act was a major turning point in black Americans’ struggle for equal rights and political power. The ...

President Obama's nominee for the No. 2 spot at the Homeland Security Department ran into a wall of criticism ahead of a planned confirmation hearing late Thursday morning, as Republicans scrambled to try and postpone the hearing amid allegations he may have improperly helped a firm run by Hillary Clinton's brother. Alejandro Mayorkas, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, is under investigation by the department's inspector general. He is so far still set to testify at 11 a.m. ET before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. But Republicans, in a letter Wednesday to committee Chairman Sen. Ford Motor Co. (F), fresh off record first-half profit in North America, has plenty left in the tank as it builds more of the models pacing the U.S. auto industry’s growth. Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, made $4.77 billion in its home region during the year’s first six months, driven by surging demand for Fusion family cars and F- Series pickups. The Dearborn, Michigan-based company is adding factory capacity to build more of both of those models starting this quarter. Even with limited supply of models such as Fusion, which quickly became one of the top-selling cars in the U.S., Ford has gained the most share in a home market that continues to accelerate more rapidly ...

Profit excluding one-time items was 84 cents a share, GM said, exceeding the 77-cent average of 13 estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That compares with 90 cents a share a year earlier. GM rose 0.6 percent to $37.37 at 9:46 a.m. New York time. The shares earlier touched $37.71, the highest intraday price since January 2011. Demand for pickups in the U.S. as well as Cadillacs and Buicks in China boosted revenue 3.9 percent. The growth for GM, along with Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC, is ...

Irreverent and unyielding in its opposition to U.S. foreign policy, Antiwar.com has been called many things. But that Washington might consider the 17-year-old news and opinion website a threat to national security should be cause for alarm—especially today. The Obama administration has come under scrutiny this summer following revelations that it’s been snooping on journalists in connection with the unprecedented number of federal leak prosecutions in recent years. Meanwhile, thanks to revelations by Edward Snowden, the American public now knows the government has more access than ever to our Internet browsing habits, e-mails, Facebook accounts, and phone and Skype records. At a ceremony in Havana last week UNESCO (U.N. Now the focus has shifted to Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. The evidence against the 14-time All-Star is ”far beyond” what the league had against Braun, according to ESPN.com. However, the Yankees don’t expect Rodriguez to be suspended immediately, sources told the website. ESPN.com is also reporting that, according to sources, Rodriguez could very likely face a suspension similar to Braun’s. ...

New Home Sales at Highest Level in 5 Years

Americans snapped up new homes in June at the fastest pace in five years, a sign the housing recovery is strengthening. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that sales rose 8.3 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 497,000. That's up from an annual pace of 459,000 in May, which was revised lower. While sales are still below the 700,000 pace consistent with healthy markets, they have risen 38 percent in the past 12 months. That's the biggest annual gain since January 1992. Home sales and prices have climbed since early last year, buoyed by solid hiring and low mortgage rates. Housing has helped drive economic growth this year at a time when other parts of ...

Back in January, President Barack Obama signed a number of executive orders into law, including one that ordered the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to study ways to reduce the threat of gun violence. That study has finally been released and it likely doesn’t produce the narrative that the White House wanted. While it offers insight into gun violence and how to identify and prevent it from occuring, CNS News dug into the study and notes that it points to firearms as an important deterrent to crime and that instances of gun violence have fallen over the last five years: Self-defense can be an important crime deterrent,” says a new report by the Centers for Disease Control ...
