A federal judge upheld a West Virginia law requiring student athletes to compete with other members of their biological sex, dealing a blow to both the transgender movement and the Biden administration, which had supported the lawsuit challenging the statute. Southern District of West Virginia Judge Joseph Goodwin ruled Thursday that the Mountain States Save Womens Sports Act (H.B. 3293), which requires athletic teams sponsored by any public secondary school or a state institution of higher education that are designated as female- only to deny entry to biological males, does not violate either the 14th Amendment or Title IX of the Education Amendments of ...

The Oregon Department of Education has come under fire for a document published on Thursday, titled Supporting Gender Expansive Students: Guidance for Schools, which appears to counsel school staff to help students conceal their expansive gender identities from their parents. If a student declares a new gender identity, the guide instructs school districts to immediately begin treating them in accordance with that identity, informing teachers of their new name and pronouns, and updating their name on school records. New House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said in his acceptance speech repealing the funding for "funding for 87,000 new IRS agents" will be "our first bill" and that came amid a recent report finding a far-higher audit rate for lower-income taxpayers than millionaires. Still, the report spins that data to suggest more agents are needed to go after millionaires more, rather than reduce the effort to scrape from the poor to fund the Democrats' big-spending agenda. In a 3-2 decision, the Idaho Supreme Court Thursday upheld three abortion- related laws, including the trigger law which took effect immediately after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last June. The outcome was foreshadowed last August when the Court declined to stay the implementation of these laws in another 3-2 decision, wrote James Dawson for Boise State Public Radio News. Idaho Republican Party Chairwoman Dorothy Moon applauded the decision. The Idaho Supreme Court followed the basic canons of constitutional interpretation and found that our constitution does not include an implied right to abort the unborn. She added, Our ...

Measuring the Impact of Dobbs in the Coming Years: Part One Post Date: 2023-01-08 23:39:59 by Charles_Byrd

To any observer, the overturning of Roe was obviously an enormously significant event in our nations history and a political watershed. Abortion was no longer, by the Supreme Courts fiat, legal in all fifty states, throughout pregnancy, for any and every reason or none at all. But for pro-lifers, it represented so much more. It meant, for the first time in nearly half a century that states would have the actual legal authority to protect unborn children, in many cases, from the moment of conception forward. Lives could be saved. Click for Full Text!
New York Times Blames 'Deregulation' for Regulated Electric Costs Post Date: 2023-01-07 06:18:05 by Charles_Byrd

As Americans recover from the recent winter storms, many are also bracing for an additional onslaught when they get their monthly electric bill. Retail electric prices are up in recent years, and while this can be attributed to everything from the war in Ukraine to broader inflationary trends, a recent article in The New York Times claims to have identified the real culprit: deregulation! According to the Times, "residents living in a deregulated market pay $40 more per month for electricity than those in the states that let individual utilities control most or all parts of the grid." The Times notes that so-called deregulated states tend to spend more on transmission lines and ...

Its a tradition round these parts (and by these parts I mean my desktop, comfy chair, and rum bottle) to end December by cleaning house of interesting bits and pieces I didnt get to use during the year. Normally, this housecleaning consists of unused back-and-forths with journalists and academics. But this years different: I had no such exchanges. This year, practically everyone I reached out to would only speak off-the-record. I attribute this to the fact that 2022 was the year in which talentless predatory hacks like Taylor Lorenz and Felicia Sonmez scanned their colleagues tweets for cancellation material. So journalists got cold feet about ...

Justin Amash: Kevin McCarthy Is a 'Compulsive Liar' Who 'Cares Only About Power' Post Date: 2023-01-06 00:24:02 by Charles_Byrd

As the House of Representatives Wednesday erupted in the kind of chaotic energy one normally associates with far-flung parliaments during Question Time, there was a familiar face sitting with a wry smile next to his old friend Rep. Thomas Massie (RKy.): The former five-term congressman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Justin Amash. Amash, who was elected each time as a Republican but then during his last term disaffiliated from the GOP and eventually became the first sitting Libertarian in congressional history, was not there just to watch it all burn downhe is offering himself up as perhaps the unlikeliest candidate for speaker of the House in an already unlikely 118th session of ...

Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) again failed to win in the 10th round as 20 conservative hard-liners are still dug in against him. He and his allies have kept up negotiations throughout the day and may be getting closer to an agreement. Click for Full Text!

What unites the Republicans who are resisting the election of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (RCalif.), the former House minority leader, as speaker? According to a New York Times article published yesterday, it is their devotion to Donald Trump and his fantasy of a stolen presidential election. Yet today the Times noted that McCarthy's opponents were completely unfazed by the former president's endorsement of McCarthy and calls for Republican unity. If this fight is not about Trump, what is it about? Unlike previous GOP "insurgent movements" that "aspired to change the vision of the party," Times reporters Lisa Lerer and Reid J. Epstein aver in a "news ...

The House voted to adjourn and delay the next round of votes for House speaker after Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to win the support needed after the 11th round of voting. The vote to recess until noon Friday, to allow more time for McCarthy to negotiate with the 20 members of his party standing between him and the speaker's gavel, follows a highly contentious adjournment vote Wednesday night. Despite major concessions, talks with the conservative hard- liners didn't result in a deal that could get McCarthy to 218 votes, but in a promising sign for McCarthy, his allies appear to have made progress Thursday evening on an agreement with detractors.
