Last week, a 34-year-old man apparently committed an act of terrorism against the U.S. power grid when he ran his Toyota Camry through the gate of a solar energy plant just outside of Las Vegas. The driver, identified as Mohammad Mesmarian, allegedly set fire to the car after the crash in an attempt to maximize damage. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday. Mesmarian was arrested at a campground 30 miles from the incident on Thursday. He is charged with committing an act of terrorism, first-degree arson, third-degree arson, destroying or injuring real or personal property of another, and escape by a felony prisoner. A North Carolina man faces charges of assault with intent to kill for exposing two detectives and a sheriff's deputy to opioids—possibly fentanyl—during a traffic stop on January 5. One detective reportedly lost consciousness after exposure to the drugs. The Oregon Department of Education has come under fire for a document published on Thursday, titled “Supporting Gender Expansive Students: Guidance for Schools,” which appears to counsel school staff to help students conceal their “expansive” gender identities from their parents. If a student declares a new gender identity, the guide instructs school districts to immediately begin treating them in accordance with that identity, informing teachers of their new name and pronouns, and updating their name on school records. Addressing inflation is widely the No. 1 issue for Congress, according to U.S. adult residents in the latest YouGov poll. Lowering inflation (76%) was the No. 1 issue for newly seated 118th Congress to address, while "protecting Social Security and Medicare" (71%) was a close second. The FBI Washington Field Office announced that it was increasing its reward for information regarding the Capitol Hill pipe bomber days before the second anniversary of Jan. 6. Two pipe bombs were found at the Republican and Democratic National Committees leading the FBI to conduct an investigation and offer an initial reward of $100,000. The engine supplier for Lockheed Martin’s highly-sought F-35 fighter jet has suspended deliveries while an investigation into a December accident proceeds, Defense News reported Wednesday, stalling hundreds of planned jet deliveries. The Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO), the Defense Contract Management Agency and engine maker Pratt & Whitney came to a “mutual agreement” to block new engine deliveries on Dec. 27, the JPO told Defense News. The Biden administration just gave the okay for the U.S. Postal Service to ignore state abortion bans and send abortion drugs through the mail in all 50 states. The Hill reports the U.S. Department of Justice issued the legal opinion to the U.S. Postal Service and independent mail services Tuesday in response to several recent Biden administration decisions that allow abortion drugs to be sold through the mail or at a pharmacy.
